About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

- Our condolences to Lindsay Gardner on the passing of her father, Mr. Paul Henry, 69, recently in Tennessee; and to Kim-Anh Huynh on the passing of her aunt, Mrs. Sang Van Truong, 80, on September 19, 2011, in California.
- A Thank-You Note to Winnie Lebo and Cindy Rhoad, who serve as editors for this newsletter, The Epistle.
- This Sunday, October 2nd, we will bless the animals at 4:00 PM.  Bring your pets, pictures of pets alive and passed, stuffed animals, whatever you have. During the service we will read scriptures about creation and God's love for all creatures, and we will sing hymns such as "All things bright and beautiful." The priest will pray for each non-human participant, and he will lay hands on him or her, if it is safe to do so. Please join us. Note: The Feast of St. Francis will be on October 4th.
- St. Pat's will not have a Bazaar this fall. The vestry is planning for a community event in April 2012.
- We need volunteers to serve for the coffee hour on each Sunday. A sign-up sheet has been posted at the window of the kitchen. Please sign up for the day that is convenient for you to serve. Thank you very much for your ministry at St. Patrick's.
- Our Vicar Tinh Huynh and Winnie Lebo met today with Mrs. Jeanette Black, the new principal of Westlawn Elementary School. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce themselves, and to discuss how the church and the school collaborate in helping the needy children during the 2011-12 school-year. Many thanks to all of you for your generous donations of school supplies for the Westlawn Elementary School students. Today our Winnie delivered the seventh and last bag of donated gifts to the Guidance Counselor's office at the school. 
- Our Nancy Burch will be involved with the KAIROS Weekend at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, in  Fluvanna, Virginia, on October 6-9. The Kairos Weekend is designed to assist participating inmates in their interactions with the Lord -- through Bible study, discussions, confidential sharing, singing, and praying. The purpose of the program is to bring the knowledge of God's love to those who have experienced very little evidence of love in their lives. Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women is a large facility that houses approximately 1200 women. Your prayers for the participants and the leaders are requested. - St. Pat's 8th graders are encouraged to attend the 8th-grade Weekend at Shrine Mont on Oct. 7-9 . A  similar event for 6th & 7th graders will be held at Shrine Mont on November 11-13. Cost: $150/participant (scholarship available). Our Bobby Dubas was selected to attend the diocesan PYM meeting at Shrine Mont, and he participated in the planning for the above-mentioned weekends. St. Pat's youth and parents: Please speak with Bobby and/or Fr. Tinh if you are interested in attending the weekends at Shrine Mont. - An Inquirer's Class will be held at St. Patrick's for those seeking to learn more about their faith as experienced and lived out in the Anglican Tradition. The class will meet after church for one hour on the following Sundays: Oct. 16, Oct. 30, Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20, and Nov. 27. The Inquirer's Class is also designed as the natural stepping stone to confirmation as an Episcopalian. For more information about the Inquirer's Class please contact Rev. Tinh Huynh. - The Cookies for Coeds Packing Party will be at the home of Maggie & Felix Spinelli, 3343 Slade Run Dr. , from 10:00-noon on Sat., Oct. 22nd. For information, please contact Catherine Dubas, 703-207-0424. - On Saturday, October 22, our Elisabeth Nguyễn and 15 volunteers from her office will prepare food for the homeless.  They will work in the kitchen of St. Patrick's and deliver the food to the Bailey's Crossroads Community Center. The date scheduled for St. Pat's members to prepare food for the homeless is November 19. Elisabeth Nguyễn and Amelia Nicholson will be coordinators for the event. Please mark your calendar and join us. - The Committee on Congregational Missions invites you to attend Small Church Day on October 29 at Christ Church, Spotsylvania with Bishop Jones. - Our search for a youth minister: Resumes are being received and the interviewing process will begin soon. That means we must now get serious about raising funds for the $20,000 offered salary. We are hoping that you will feel free to donate to this cause. Checks should be made payable to St. Patrick's, with "youth minister" on the memo line. We are also looking for fund raising ideas and volunteers to bring these ideas to completion. My friend and colleague, Beth Paige, was able to deliver the  wonderful supplies from St. Patrick's to the Abba Orphanage. Here are a few of the photos from her trip. Thank you for your ongoing care and support for these girls! A brief update: the landlord of their property decided to rent to another group. But it worked out well for the orphanage--they located a larger space which is more suitable for the school. Your cash donations help offset their moving expenses.

For the Poor and the Neglected
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you
all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. On Last Sunday's Sermon

(Matthew 21:23-32; Philippians 2:1-13)
Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem, and he was upset seeing the money changers and the dove sellers doing business in the temple. He then overturned their tables and seats, and he drove them out of the place. The religious leaders who ran the temple questioned Jesus, "By what authority are you doing these things?"
Jesus did not give them an answer. He told them a parable: There was a father who had two sons. He asked them to go to work in his vineyard. One said "No!" but later he went and helped. The other son said "Yes," but did nothing.
Jesus asked, "Who really did the father's will?" Obviously, the first son did. Jesus then said to the religious leaders that the outcasts, who listened to him and repented, would enter the kingdom of God before them. Hypocrites, like those powerful religious leaders, spoke so well about God, yet they rejected Jesus' message.
The parable is not about obedience vs. disobedience. It is about doing vs. talking.
In the Sunday Paper that our children took home from Sunday School this week, there was a line in the parent section that reads, "This story is a warning to well-spoken people of all kinds. Jesus was terribly hard on people who knew all the right answers and who were quick to judge or admonish others, but who failed to make deep transformations in their own ways of doing things. Parents are especially at risk here, since they stand as moral teachers or examples for their children."
We have to guard against talking too much about Jesus, while doing little to follow Jesus. Which son are we like? Where is the vineyard? How do we proclaim Christ's love?
Fr. Henri Nouwen, a Catholic spiritual writer, says in his Bread For the Journey that the poor are at the center of the Church. The poor are our mission field. We have to do something about poverty.
However, the poor are not just the people at the homeless shelter or at an orphanage in a foreign land. Spiritually speaking, they can be in our own families. Can we recognize their poverty and respond to their needs (1), allow ourselves to think the same way as Christ Jesus (2), or are we running away from them?
Even closer, the poor can be ourselves, who feel unloved, rejected, and wounded (3). Are we doing something about our own spiritual poverty? Or are we just covering it up with our rhetoric?
St. Francis of Assisi once said, "Preach the gospel always; when necessary, use words." The parable is a call to repentance.

Can a self-proclaimed disciple of Jesus be attentive to the spiritual needs of his or her spouse? When the road becomes rough, can one companion take up leadership and assist the other, seeing spiritual poverty in him or her? A parent may not see spiritual poverty in his or her child, and vise versa. (2) "Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself and became obedient to the point of death -- even death on a cross." - Mục Sư Tỉnh và Bà Winnie Lebo đă đến trường Westlawn Elementary School trong khu vực nhà thờ để gặp Hiệu Trưởng mới của trường là Bà Jeannett Black. Mục đích của buổi họp là để bàn về sự hợp tác giữa nhà thờ và nhà trường trong sự giúp đỡ các gia đ́nh nghèo trong niên khóa 2011-12. Hội Thánh cám ơn tất cả các quư vị đă có ḷng hảo tâm quyên tặng học cụ cho các em. Danh sách học cụ cần thiết có đăng trong phần Anh Ngữ. Quư vị cu~ng có thể tặng tiền bằng cách viết chi phiếu cho nhà thờ hoặc để tiền vào phong b́. Xin quư vị ghi thêm ở ḍng "memo" của chi phiếu, hoặc trên phong b́, chữ "Westlawn School Supplies." Trong khi cầu nguyện chúc phước cho từng "bạn," Mục Sư sẽ đặt tay lên đầu của "bạn" nào mà quư vị bảo đảm là an toàn.
- Ủy ban Sức Khỏe Tinh Thần của Giáo Phận Virginia sẽ tổ chức một buổi hội thảo với tựa đề, "Hội Thánh Trước Vấn Đề Tự Tử," tại nhà thờ St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alexandria, Virginia, ngày 29 tháng 10. Cuộc hội thảo nhắm vào nhu cầu của các tín hữu t́m cách ngăn cản những người toan tự tử để an ủi và hỗ trợ cho gia đ́nh của họ. Về chi tiết, xin xem phần Anh Ngữ.
- Năm nay nhà thờ chúng ta sẽ không tổ chức Bazaar vào tháng 10. Ban Chấp Hành hiện đang hoạch định một sinh hoạt cộng đồng vào tháng 4, 2012.
- Bà Cate Johnson, thành viên nhà thờ Thánh Patrick hiện đang làm việc ở Pakistan, viết thư cám ơn Hội Thánh về những  quà tặng cho các em gái cô nhi ở Lahore, Pakistan. Đây là một cô nhi viện Tin Lành nhỏ ở một xứ Hồi Giáo. Các em rất mừng khi nhận được quà do quư vị gởi cách đây hai tháng. Gần đây, chủ nhà cho thuê đ̣i nhà lại, nên cô nhi viện phải t́m chỗ khác. Tạ ơn Chúa, họ t́m được một chỗ rộng răi hơn cho các em. Việc dời chỗ cu~ng có phí tổn. Tuy nhiên, số tiền quư vị quyên tặng kỳ trước đă giúp cô nhi viện trang trải được. Xin cám ơn hảo tâm của quư vị.
- Nhà thờ chúng ta hiện đang t́m một người chuyên lo mục vụ thiếu niên và đang phỏng vấn một vài ứng viên. Nhà thờ sẽ quyên $20,000 để trả lương cho người nầy. Nhà thờ hoan hỉ nhận sự dâng hiến của quư vị cho Quỹ Mục Vụ Thiếu Niên. Nếu đóng góp bằng chi phiếu, xin viết cho St. Patrick's Church và ở hàng "memo" xin đề: Youth Ministry.
- Hội Thánh phân ưu cùng Bà Kim-Anh Huỳnh về sự qua đời của người cô ruột là Bà Trương Văn Sáng, nhu~ danh Nguyễn Thị Lành, 80 tuổi, vào ngày 19 tháng 9, 2011, tại California.
- Nhà thờ cần quư vị t́nh nguyện làm cà phê và đăi bánh ngọt sau lễ mỗi sáng Chúa Nhật. Tại cửa sổ bếp có gắn tờ ghi danh. Xin quư vị điền vào ngày thích hợp nhất để giúp Hội Thánh. Cám ơn quư anh chị em về mục vụ tại Saint Patrick's.

- Nhà thờ đă mướn thợ sơn các pḥng bên dưới cho Trường Montessori thuê để giữ trẻ em, hồi cuối tháng 8.
- Vào ngày thứ sáu, 11 tháng 11, một số thành viên Ban Chấp Hành Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick sẽ thuyết tŕnh về Hội Thánh chúng ta tại buổi họp của Ủy Ban Điều Hành của Giáo Phận. Mục đích của việc thuyết tŕnh là để xin Giáo Phận chấp thuận cho Hội Thánh chúng ta trở thành một nhà thờ tự lập (parish). Trong ba năm qua, nhà thờ chúng ta không nhận trợ cấp của Giáo Phận, hội đủ điều kiện để được công nhận tư cách tự trị.

Tóm Tắt Bài Giảng Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Phúc Âm Ma Thi Ơ thuật truyện Đức Giêsu đến đền thờ, thấy những người buôn bán bồ câu và đổi tiền tại nơi ấy, Chúa nổi giận, lật đổ bàn ghế của họ và đuổi tất cả ra khỏi. Các chức sắc đạo Do Thái cai quản đền thờ tức quá, họ hỏi Chúa: "Do thẩm quyền nào mà ông làm chuyện đó?"
Đức Giêsu không trả lời họ. Ngài kể cho họ một dụ ngôn: Có người cha kêu hai con trai vô vườn nho làm việc. Đứa thứ nhất dùng dằng không chịu đi, song cuối cùng lại tới vườn làm việc. Ông kêu đứa thư hai th́ nó nói, "Dạ, con sẽ đi," song lại chẳng đi. Chúa hỏi họ: "Vậy ai thật sự làm theo ư cha ḿnh?" Rơ ràng là đứa thứ nhất. Chúa nói với mấy người chức sắc rằng những người bị xă hội ruồng bỏ mà ăn năn - như phường đĩ điếm và kẻ thâu thuế -- sẽ vào Nước Trời trước họ. Những kẻ giả h́nh như họ nói rất hay về Chúa, song họ chẳng quan tâm ǵ đến sứ điệp của Chúa.
Dụ ngôn nầy không phải về chuyện vâng lời hay không vâng lời, mà là về sự bất nhất giữa lời nói và việc làm.
Trong bài học Trường Chúa Nhật cho thiếu nhi có ḍng chữ sau đây cho cha mẹ: "Dụ ngôn Chúa kể là một lời cảnh cáo cho những người nói hay nói giỏi. Đức Giêsu rất thẳng thắn đối với ai nghĩ ḿnh đúng và vội vàng đoán xét hay lên giọng khuyên lơn người khác, trong khi chính họ không chịu thay đổi lối sống nghịch với sự dạy dỗ của Chúa. Cha mẹ rất dễ phạm lỗi nầy, v́ họ có trách nhiệm hướng dẫn về luân lư và làm gương cho con.
Chúng ta coi chừng việc nói quá nhiều về Chúa mà chẳng làm theo lời Chúa. Như vậy, công tác của chúng ta là ǵ? Chúng ta giống người con nào trong truyện Chúa kể? Vườn nho của Cha chúng ta là ở đâu?
Linh Mục Henri Nouwen, trong quyển Bread For the Journey, viết rằng mục vụ chính của Hội Thánh là cứu giúp người nghèo (1) . Người nghèo chính là "vườn nho" của chúng ta. Đương nhiên, ai cu~ng biết là làm việc từ thiện là tốt.
Tuy nhiên, người nghèo không phải chỉ là người ḿnh thấy ở các trung tâm cho người vô gia cư hay trong cô nhi viện của một xứ xa xôi. Họ có thể là người trong gia đ́nh (2). Chúng ta có nh́n thấy cái nghèo của họ và đối xử giúp đỡ họ với tâm t́nh giống Đức Giêsu chăng? (3) Hay là chúng ta chạy trốn?
Gần hơn nữa, người nghèo có thể là ḿnh -- thiếu t́nh thương, bị từ khước hay đầy vết thương ẩn dấu trong tâm hồn? Chúng ta có làm ǵ cho cái nghèo tâm linh của chính ḿnh? Chúng ta có ăn năn, t́m hiểu nỗi đau hay cái "phốt" của ḿnh, t́m sự chữa lành? Hay là chúng ta chỉ cứ nói, nói quá nhiều về Chúa để che đậy sự nghèo nàn ấy?
Thánh Francis có câu nói sau: "Hăy luôn rao giảng Phúc Âm: [chỉ] dùng lời nói khi cần." Dụ ngôn của Chúa chính là lời kêu ta hoán cải.

(2) Người hay cằn nhằn gây sự có thể là người "nghèo": nghèo sức khỏe, tinh thần bệnh hoạn, có nỗi đau ẩn dấu hay có nỗi oán hận lâu ngày. Ta có nhận ra cái "nghèo" của họ? Có khi không thấy cái "nghèo tâm linh" nơi người phối ngẫu. Nói quá nhiều th́ làm sao thấy được? Cha mẹ không thấy cái nghèo tâm linh của con ḿnh, hay ngược lại, người con không thấy cái nghèo tâm linh của cha mẹ. Người nghèo có thể không biết ḿnh nghèo: tại chỗ nhóm họp họ nói nhiều lời hoa mỹ, song khi về nhà họ xử tệ với người trong gia đ́nh.
(3) "Là đấng, vốn dĩ là Thiên Chúa mà không nghĩ phải nhất quyết duy tŕ địa vị ngang hàng với Thiên Chúa, nhưng đă hoàn toàn trút bỏ vinh quang, mặc lấy thân nô lệ, trở nên giống phàm nhân, sống như người trần thế. Người lại c̣n hạ ḿnh, vâng lời cho đến nỗi chịu chết, chết trên cây thập tự." (Phi Líp 2:6-8). Chúa bảo: "Không ai có t́nh thương lớn hơn t́nh thương của người hy sinh mạng sống ḿnh cho bạn ḿnh." (Giăng 15:13)
