About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

- Many thanks to all of you who worked so hard on the clean-up day. On Saturday we removed the weeds, cleared the bushes around the air-conditioning compressor, and renewed the insulation of the air-conditioning pipes on the roof of the office wing. Photos of the event are posted below.
- On Sunday, October 2, we will bless the animals at 4:00 PM. The service will be held in the church. Please bring your friends to join us. During the service we will read scriptures on creation and God's love for all creatures, and we will sing hymns such as "All things bright and beautiful." The priest will pray for each participant, and he will lay hands on him or her, if it is safe to do so.
- The Mental Health Committee of the Diocese of Virginia will sponsor a conference entitled, "The Church and Suicide: Compassion and Response," which will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 29, 2011, from 10 AM to 3 PM. The conference will discuss the issues of suicide in light of the Church's teaching and the physical, mental, moral and spiritual conditions that surround it, looking at suicide from the perspective of a survivor as well as a mental health practitioner. Focus will be on the needs of Christians who seek to deter those persons contemplating suicide and to provide comfort and connection for their families.
A breakfast snack and light lunch will be served. Suggested donation is $20, to help cover expenses. St. Paul's is at 228 S. Pitt St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Parking is available at Republic Parking, 111 S. Pitt St.. The cost is $2.00. Free Shuttles from the Metro Stop at King Street Station run all day.

- The church welcomes your donation of school supplies to help the Westlawn Elementary School children. Some of  the things the children need are: large and small Elmer's Glue sticks, 8-oz. bottles of Elmer's Glue, 4-oz. bottles of Elmer's Glue, 8 - 10 count Crayola Classic Markers, 24-count Crayola Crayons, yellow highlighters, 12-count colored pencils, large Expo Whiteboard markers, #2 pencils, Pink Pearl erasers, eraser caps, Fiskar scissors, packs of wide rule loose-leaf paper, packs of college rule loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, 3x5 index cards, sticky notes, pocket folders with brads, pocket folders without brads, 1-inch and 2-inch 3-ring binders, hand sanitizer, tissues and disinfectant wipes. St. Patrick's and Westlawn Elementary School are partners in helping the poor.
- St. Pat's 8th graders are encouraged to attend the 8th-grade Weekend at Shrine Mont on Oct. 7-9 . This  youth-planned and youth-led event is for 8th-graders and their adult supervisors. The weekend consists of thoughtful conversation and bible study but also leaves plenty of time for games, music, crafts, silliness, and a dance. The event starts Friday after dinner and runs until Sunday before lunch. All youth must be accompanied by adults at an 8:1 youth to adult ratio. Cost: $150/participant (scholarship available) Please register by October 4.
A similar event for 6th & 7th graders will be held at Shrine Mont on November 11-13. This is the largest of all our diocesan youth events. The goal of the weekend is to introduce the youth of the diocese to the Parish Youth Ministry (PYM) committee and its programming. The weekend itself will consist of games, music, crafts,  conversation, reflection, and a carnival! Cost will be $150/person (scholarship available).

Note: Our Bobby Dubas was selected to attended the PYM meeting at Shrine Mont on Sept. 9-11. At this meeting, Bobby participated in the planning for the above-mentioned weekends. - Fall Youth Day of Service at St. James' the Less, Ashland -- October 29th, 10 AM ~ 2 PM. This is an opportunity for our 6-12 graders to work with youth from other churches in the Diocese on a service project to help the community and to learn about "mission." The event will also include games, songs, worship and reflection on the work at hand, and having a blast! Cost: $15.00 per person. St. Pat's youth and parents: please speak with Fr. Tinh if you are interested in attending the event, to make arrangement for registration and transportation.
- Our search for a youth minister: Resumes are being received and the interview process will soon begin. That means we have to get serious about raising funds for the $20,000 offered salary. We are hoping you will feel free to donate to this cause. Checks should be made payable to St. Patrick's with "youth minister" on the memo line. We are also looking for fund raising ideas and volunteers to bring these ideas to completion. Feel free to contact any vestry member with you ideas. We welcome any contributions you can make, both monetary and ideas.
- Bishop Visitation. The Rt. Rev. Ted Gulick, Assistant Bishop, will visit St. Patrick's on Sunday, December 4th. A confirmation class will be held for those wishing to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. Baptism will also be officiated at the bishop's visitation.

Vestry Notes
| | - Justin Nguyen, a member of the scouts group that meets at St. Patrick's on Saturday afternoon, will make a new "Welcome to Saint Patrick's" sign for his Eagle Scout award. This sign will replace the old one that once stood near the rectory. The vestry voted to approve Justin's project, and Justin plans to work on it in spring 2012.
- After the earthquake that happened in August and Hurricane Irene that passed through Virginia recently, Bishop Johnston has appointed a diocesan Disaster Preparedness and Response Ministry Team, led by the Rev. Pete Gustin and Mr. Dan Wilmoth. The Bishop asks each congregation to appoint a single disaster point of contact, to perform the following functions: - Help develop and maintain the congregation's emergency plan, e.g. maintaining a list of people in the congregation with special needs (transportation needs, language needs or any other access and functional needs) and how those needs will be met in an emergency;
- Maintain a list of persons in the congregation with various training, skills and equipment who could respond both immediately and long-term to emergencies;
- Maintain contact with the diocesan Disaster Preparedness and Response Ministry Team.
The Vestry is looking for someone in our congregation who is willing to serve as the contact person of St. Patrick's for this purpose. If you wish to help the community in this matter, please let Tinh+ or Tom Auld know. At last Tuesday's meeting, the Vestry also discuss on how St. Patrick's can provide emergency shelter for its parishioners. |

On Last Sunday's Sermon

(Matthew 20:1-16)
Peter wondered if Jesus would favor him and his friends in the new kingdom, because they had given up everything to follow him. Jesus responded by telling this parable:
A businessman hired laborers to work in his vineyard. Between 6 AM and 5 PM, the workers came in different groups and at different hours. At sunset, when the work was done, all of them came to him to get paid. No matter what time they started, every worker received the same amount of pay, a denarius, which was a day's wage for a common laborer of that time. Those who started early in the morning were very angry, and they complained, saying that they should have received more than those who came later. But the owner of the vineyard said, "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?"
What did Jesus want to tell Peter and his friends? To humanity, fairness is important; yet to God, grace is. While we care about our differences, God regards all humans the same.
Our sameness is in the life that God gives us. Each of us has only one life to live. Can we accept our denarius? Can we just focus on our own denarius, and give thanks for it, and forget about what other people get?
Sometimes we find ourselves complaining, unable to give thanks for our lives. Sometimes we find ourselves unable to celebrate the gifts that other people receive - their talents, their happiness, their riches. To be free from anxiety, those wishing to enter the Kingdom must practice gratitude. How can one give thanks to God in difficult times? This is a great challenge. Gratitude requires hard spiritual work.
The collect for today reads, " Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."

- Hàng tuần, tờ tin tức của Hội Thánh được in và đặt ở pḥng narthex. Xin quư anh chị em lấy tờ tin tức nầy khi đến thờ phượng vào sáng Chúa Nhật.
- Hàng năm, vào đầu tháng 9, Nhà Thờ chúng ta quyên tặng giấy bút và các học cụ cho các em nhà nghèo thuộc Trường Tiểu Học Westlawn. Chúng ta sẽ để một cái hộp ở pḥng narthex, và xin quư vị mang đến nhà thờ những thứ như sau: keo dán Elmer's, viết ch́ màu, tập vở và giấy, vv (xin xem phần Anh Ngữ -- chi tiết ở đó rơ ràng hơn).
- Hội Thánh cám ơn tất cả các quư vị đă đến giúp làm sạch sẽ nhà thờ vào ngày thứ bảy tuần trước. Hôm đó chúng ta đă nhỏ cỏ dại, khai quang bụi cây chung quanh máy điều ḥa không khí của nhà thờ và bọc lại các ống dẫn máy lạnh trên mái văn pḥng. Một số quư vị làm sạch sẽ nhà bếp và bên trong nhà thờ.
- Chiều Chúa Nhật, 2 tháng 10, sẽ có lễ chúc phước cho thú vật tại nhà thờ, lúc 4 giờ. Quư anh chị em có "bạn" trong nhà xin mang đến để được Mục Sư cầu nguyện chúc phước cho. Chúng ta sẽ sắp ghế để ḿnh và các bạn ngồi đối diện trước cung thánh. Trong lễ chúng ta sẽ đọc các đoạn Kinh Thánh về sự sáng tạo và t́nh thương của Thiên Chúa trên muôn loài, và chúng ta cu~ng sẽ hát các bản thánh ca theo ư trên. Trong khi cầu nguyện chúc phước cho từng "bạn," Mục Sư sẽ đặt tay lên đầu của "bạn" nào mà quư vị bảo đảm là an toàn.
- Ủy ban Sức Khỏe Tinh Thần của Giáo Phận Virginia sẽ tổ chức một buổi hội thảo với tựa đề, "Hội Thánh Trước Vấn Đề Tự Tử," tại nhà thờ St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Alexandria, Virginia, ngày 29 tháng 10. Trong buổi hội thảo nầy, vấn đề tự vẫn sẽ được nêu lên theo sự dạy dỗ của Hội Thánh và đối chiếu với các t́nh trạng thể chất, tinh thần và tâm linh của các đương sự, nhận định về tự tử với cái nh́n của một người sống sót và của một chuyên gia về tâm bệnh. Cuộc hội thảo nhắm vào nhu cầu của các tín hữu t́m cách ngăn cản những người toan tự tử để an ủi và hỗ trợ cho gia đ́nh của họ. Về chi tiết, xin xem phần Anh Ngữ.
- Giáo Phận Virgina sẽ tổ chức cuộc họp cuối tuần tại trung tâm Shrine Mont cho các em lớp 8 vào ngày 7-9 tháng 10. Phí tổn cho mỗi người tham dự là $150.00, và sẽ có học bổng cho ai yêu cầu. Buổi hội họp sẽ gồm có phần thảo luận hữu ích và học Kinh Thánh, song cu~ng có rất nhiều th́ giờ cho tṛ chơi và âm nhạc. Các em sẽ bắt đầu với bữa ăn tối thứ sáu, và chấm dứt trước 12 giờ trưa Chúa Nhật. Tất cả các em phải có người lớn đi theo hướng dẫn, mỗi 8 em phải có một phụ huynh đi kèm. Ghi danh trước ngày 4 tháng 10.
Một sinh họat tương tự sẽ được tổ chức cho các em lớp 6 và lớp 7 tại Shrine Mont, vào ngày 11-13 tháng 11. Đây là sinh hoạt thiếu niên đông nhất của giáo phận.
Mục Sư Tỉnh khuyến khích các em tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick tham dự. Nếu muốn, xin phụ huynh các em nói chuyện với Mục Sư.

- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 4 tháng 12, Giám Mục Ted Gullick, Phụ Tá Giám Mục Virginia, sẽ đến thăm Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick. Trong ngày đó sẽ có lễ Báp Tem và Xác Nhận Niềm Tin để gia nhập Hội Thánh. Mục Sư Tỉnh sẽ tổ chức lớp học để chuẩn bị cho ngày nói trên.

Tóm Tắt Bài Giảng Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

"Những kẻ đứng chót sẽ lên hàng đầu, c̣n những kẻ đứng đầu sẽ phải xuống hàng chót."
Ông Phê-rơ và mấy môn-đệ khác hỏi Đức Giêsu là về sau họ có được thành ông nọ ông kia trong vương quốc mới không, v́ họ đă bỏ hết mọi sự mà theo người. Đức Giêsu liền kể: Có một điền chủ kia mướn người làm công trong vườn nho ḿnh. Ông nầy ra phố chợ t́m người làm, nhiều lần trong ngày: có người vào làm từ 6 giờ sáng, 9 giờ sáng, rồi 12 giờ trưa. Măi đến 5 giờ chiều ông vẫn nhận người và cho việc. Tối đến, mọi nhân công tề tựu để lănh tiền. Ông chủ quái dị nầy trả mỗi người một quan tiền, không phân biệt ai làm nhiều ai làm ít. Mấy người làm việc từ sáng sớm tức quá. Họ lằm bằm cùng ông chủ. Họ nói ông không công bằng. Họ lao lực suốt ngày mà lương cu~ng chỉ bằng người chẳng phải vất vả ǵ hết. Ông chủ phản ứng thế nào? Ông nói rằng họ đă thỏa thuận trước về quan tiền rồi, và họ vô lư, v́ ông có quyền sử dụng tiền của ḿnh: chuyện ông trả cho người vào sau đồng một quan tiền có can hệ ǵ đến người vào trước? Rồi Đức Giêsu bảo: "Những kẻ đứng chót sẽ lên hàng đầu, c̣n những kẻ đứng đầu sẽ phải xuống hàng chót."
Kẻ chót trèo lên hàng đầu, và kẻ ở hàng đầu thụt xuống hàng chót là làm sao? Trên đời ta thấy chuyện bất công mà bực ḿnh. Ở sở làm có người mới vào, ḿnh chỉ việc cho nó, rồi nó lại lănh lương bằng ḿnh, và không khéo lại thành xếp của ḿnh. Ở đời có người không tài cán nhờ lanh miệng mà được địa vị. Có người tốt mà hay gặp chuyện xấu.
Rất có thể là Đức Giêsu muốn dạy rằng con người chú trọng về sự công bằng, song Thiên Chúa chú trọng ân sủng. Chúng ta thường nhấn mạnh về sự khác biệt, nhưng Chúa nh́n mọi người như nhau. Ai cu~ng nhận một "quan tiền" như mọi người khác - một cuộc đời ngắn ngủi.
Ai cu~ng có sướng có khổ. Vấn đề là ta có nhận ra cái sướng cùng cái khổ của ḿnh, để chấp nhận. Nhiều khi chúng ta chỉ chú tâm vào cái khổ của ḿnh, rồi ganh tức về cái sướng của người khác, biết đâu họ cu~ng có những nỗi khổ không cùng. Chúng ta thường chỉ thấy bên ngoài mà không thấy bên trong. Ít khi ta thấy được cái "gift," cái ơn Chúa ban riêng cho ḿnh, để tạ ơn và dùng cho những mục đích tốt đẹp. Khi ta chấp nhận được cuộc đời của ḿnh th́ mới có thể tạ ơn Chúa trong mọi sự. Chấp nhận được th́ mới hy vọng thoát khỏi ngục tù của sự ganh tị, và dần dần đổi tính, không c̣n phàn nàn oán trách, cho dù đời có bất công đến mấy. Lúc ấy, chuyện ai lên đầu ai xuống chót không c̣n là chuyện ḿnh quan tâm nữa, và biết đâu chân đă bước ngang cổng thiên đường rồi?
Nhiều khi chúng ta quên tạ ơn Chúa về những điều tốt đẹp Chúa ban cho ḿnh. Nhiều khi chúng ta thấy ḿnh không hài ḷng lắm về những điều tốt đẹp người khác có được - tài nghệ, hạnh phúc và sự giàu có của họ. Ta muốn chú tâm vào điều tốt Chúa đă ban cho ḿnh, để tạ ơn và an hưởng điều đó. Khi thấy điều tốt đẹp mà người khác có, mà ḿnh không có, ta tạ ơn Chúa về ơn Chúa ban cho họ. Thái độ nầy không phải trên đầu môi chót lưỡi, mà phát xuất tự trong ḷng: phải tập mới có được. Tạ ơn Chúa trong mọi sự không phải là chuyện dễ làm. Nó là cả một cố gắng trường kỳ.
Lời cầu nguyện cho hôm nay nói rằng: "Ôi lạy Chúa, xin đừng để chúng con xao xuyến về những chuyện trần đời, nhưng yêu mến những điều thuôc về thiên quốc; để trong đời tạm chóng qua, ḷng chúng con quyết nắm lấy những điều vĩnh cửu."
