About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

- This Saturday, September 17th, will be Clean-up Day at St. Patrick's. We will need volunteers to take care of our house of worship. We will begin the day at 9:30 AM. Our projects will include removal of the weeds near church entrance, clearing of the bushes around the air-conditioning units, renewal of the insulation of the air-conditioning pipes and resealing the roof of the office wing. The scouts will also hold a fund-raising car wash on our church parking lot on the same day.
- It is time to gather school supplies for the Westlawn children. The church welcomes your generous donations, and there will be a box in the narthex to collect them. Some of  the things the children need are: large and small Elmer's Glue sticks, 8-oz. bottles of Elmer's Glue, 4-oz. bottles of Elmer's Glue, 8 - 10 count Crayola Classic Markers, 24-count Crayola Crayons, yellow highlighters, 12-count colored pencils, large Expo Whiteboard markers, #2 pencils, Pink Pearl erasers, eraser caps, Fiskar scissors, packs of wide rule loose-leaf paper, packs of college rule loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, 3x5 index cards, sticky notes, pocket folders with brads, pocket folders without brads, 1-inch and 2-inch 3-ring binders, hand sanitizer, tissues and disinfectant wipes. St. Patrick's and Westlawn Elementary School are partners in helping the poor.
- A thank-you note to Loc Phan, who repaired the light in the restroom of the Montessori School on Saturday.
- During the 2010 Christmas season, six needy Westlawn families who lived in the neighborhood of Saint Patrick's received our "angel tree" gifts. As our Winnie Lebo delivered the gifts, she found herself at the home of a Vietnamese woman who was paralyzed from the waist down because of an automobile accident. Her husband had divorced her, and she had three school-age children. Asked what the church could do for her, the lady said she wished to have a ramp installed at the entrance of the house where she was living. Thanks to the generosity of the members and friends of St. Patrick's, we could raise over two  thousand dollars for the purpose. Unfortunately, the location of the house and the number of steps at its entrance rendered the project unfeasible. Meanwhile, new post-surgery complications further deteriorated the lady's health, causing her so much pain and numbness. Recently, the doctors found ways to ease the pain; and, on September 12th, she and her children moved to a townhouse on Monticello Dr., Falls Church. On the same day, with the permission of the landlord, St. Patrick's hired a company to install a ramp at her new residence (see picture). The price of the ramp matched the amount of money we had for her. The lady wishes to thank all of you for your generosity. Let us celebrate the love we share in our community, and let us give thanks to God for it.
- Maggie, Felix and Ruth Spinelli will walk again on September 24-25, to "keep people with MS moving." The walk supports MS Society's effort to find a cure for the disease. The Spinelli Team has a website to facilitate donation. Their goal is $4500.00, and so far they have $3600.00. If you wish to donate, please make check payable to National MS Society -- Memo: Mike's Mushers -- and mail it to: The Spinelli's, 3343 Slade Run Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042.
- There will be an 8th-graders' Weekend at Shrine Mont on Oct. 7-9 . This will be a youth-planned and youth-led event for 8th-graders and adult supervisors. St. Pat's 8th-graders are encouraged to attend the Weekend. Cost: $150/participant (Please pay by check; online payment not available.) Please register by October 4. Questions? - This year's Small Church Day, an annual diocesan event, will be held on Saturday, October 29th, at Christ Church, Spotsylvania, VA. The meeting will be a very special celebration of the life and ministry of Bishop Jones, who will retired at the end of this year as our Bishop Suffragan. Bishop Jones will speak in the morning sessions to tell us about his life, his call to the priesthood, and his theology of spiritual gifts. After lunch the participants will celebrate the Eucharist together. Tinh+ hopes that members of St. Patrick's will attend the event, as St. Patrick's looks forward to being recognized as a parish in early 2012.
- Saint Patrick's singers are invited to join the combined choir of Episcopal churches in our area to perform Haydn's Theresa Mass on Sunday, October 30th at 4 p.m. at our church. Professional soloists and an orchestra will participate in the concert. Our church choir will start practicing today, Thursday, September 15th at 7:30 p.m.
- Bishop Visitation. The Rt. Rev. Ted Gulick, Assistant Bishop, will visit St. Patrick's on Sunday, December 4th. A confirmation class will be held for those wishing to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. Baptism will also be officiated at the bishop's visitation.
- The 217th Annual Council of the Diocese of Virginia will take place January 27-28, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency in Reston.
- Saint Patrick's will collaborate with Volunteers of America in the Hypothermia Shelter Program in the upcoming Lenten season. For the five weekends of March, 2012, Saint Patrick's will provide overnight shelter to 15-20 homeless women on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Supervised by Volunteers of America, the group will come around 8:00 PM on each scheduled evening, and they leave early in the morning of the next day. Our church members are invited to volunteer to open the church door for them as they come. Volunteer sign-up will be after Christmas.

Vestry Notes
| | - At Tuesday night's vestry meeting, it was decided that there was not enough time to launch plans for a Fall Bazaar. A tentative date of April 21, 2012, was set for holding a major fund raising event. Several ideas were discussed ranging from a bazaar to an international food festival. A future planning meeting is in the works. Ask yourself what you might like to see us do to help raise funds and bring some new faces in to enjoy the festivities.
- The continuing search for a youth minister was also discussed. Resumes are being received and the interview process will soon begin. That means we have to get serious about raising funds for the $20,000 offered salary. We are hoping you will feel free to donate to this cause. Checks should be made payable to St. Patrick's with "youth minister" on the memo line. We are also looking for fund raising ideas and volunteers to bring these ideas to completion. Feel free to contact any vestry member with you ideas. We welcome any contributions you can make, both monetary and ideas.

On Last Sunday's Sermon

(Matthew 18:21-35 )
Peter came to Jesus and said to him: "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times."
Forgiveness is the most difficult challenge in the teaching of our Lord. In the Lord's Prayer, He taught us to say, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."
Peter's question may give us a hint about what went on in the early Christian church. They must have had conflicts, and some of them must have hated each other. They knew that they should forgive each other, but they just couldn't do so. Spiritually, they were in prison.
When Jesus said "seventy-seven times," he did not mean you count the times you forgive. He meant countless times.
This is not only about forgiving the people in the church. This is for all people, in all situations. This is about forgiving the parents, the spouse, the brother, the sister, the co-worker, the employer, and anyone else. Jesus even spoke about forgiving the enemies. What about forgiving yourself?
There are obstacles to forgiveness. Many of us grew up in situations where forgiveness did not happen. The world does not encourage forgiveness. Forgiveness can be an inappropriate subject on September 11.
Forgiving does not mean forgetting. Yet "Seventy-seven times" means each time you remember you forgive again. Forgiveness is a way of life for all Christians. God created us in God's image, and God gives us the power to forgive.
West Nickel Mines School was an Amish one-room schoolhouse in the Old Order Amish community of Nickel Mines, a village in Pennsylvania. On October 2, 2006, a gunman entered the school, shot ten girls, killing five, before killing himself. The reaction of the Amish community was hard for outsiders to understand: How could they say almost immediately that they had forgiven the gunman, and how could they even reach out to his widow to offer condolences? Asked why they did that and how they could forgive in such a situation, a representative of the village said that the Amish people had a deep belief in forgiveness: the teaching of forgiveness had permeated their hearts since they were young. So in this situation they chose to forgive, following the teaching and example of the Lord. She also added that in the practicing of forgiveness you need the support of the community.
The Matthew passage we read today is a call to conversion. It is a call for us to take up the cross and follow Jesus, and it is also a call to freedom.

| When Tinh+ and Kim-Anh were vacationing in North Carolina in August, they visited St. Peter's-by-the-Sea in Swanboro, on a Sunday afternoon. While they were there, they met a group of young people and adults who were washing cars to raise funds for the church, and among them were Fleming Best (in the wheelchair), Kathy Evans (behind Fleming), and Beth Evans (Kathy's mom, in green). The ladies said that they know our Doan Tucker and the youth from St. Patrick's, who were in Swanboro in 2010 and previous years, on Beach Towel Mission.
Among the pictures of last year's trip to the Beach Towel Mission, this photo shows our Christine Moya (standing, left) and her friends painting the ramp of Fleming Best's house. Doan reports that Christine did a lot of painting on that day, both on the rails of the ramp and in the kitchen.

iTin Tức Hội Thánh

- Hàng tuần, tờ tin tức của Hội Thánh được in và đặt ở pḥng narthex. Xin quư anh chị em lấy tờ tin tức nầy khi đến thờ phượng vào sáng Chúa Nhật.
- Hàng năm, vào đầu tháng 9, Nhà Thờ chúng ta quyên tặng giấy bút và các học cụ cho các em nhà nghèo thuộc Trường Tiểu Học Westlawn. Chúng ta sẽ để một cái hộp ở pḥng narthex, và xin quư vị mang đến nhà thờ những thứ như sau: keo dán Elmer's, viết ch́ màu, tập vở và giấy, vv (xin xem phần Anh Ngữ -- chi tiết ở đó rơ ràng hơn).
- Trong mùa Giáng Sinh 2010, nhà thờ chúng ta phối hợp với Trường Tiểu Học Westlawn tặng quà cho sáu gia đ́nh nghèo trong vùng. Khi bà Winnie Lebo mang quà đến cho các gia đ́nh, bà gặp một gia đ́nh Việt Nam, gồm một người mẹ trẻ với ba đứa con nhỏ, chồng đă ly dị. Bà mẹ nầy bị tê liệt phải nằm trên giường kể từ khi bị tai nạn xe hơi và phải giải phẫu. Bà Winnie hỏi bà muốn nhà thờ giúp chuyện ǵ. Bà nói nếu được th́ xin một cái cầu bắc ở cửa ra vào để bà có thể di chuyển bằng xe lăn. Do ḷng rộng răi của thành viên và thân hữu của Hội Thánh, chúng ta đă quyên được trên hai ngàn đồng cho công việc nầy. Tuy nhiên, việc trên đă không thành v́ vị trí của ngôi nhà và thềm cửa nhà đó quá cao. Trong khi đó, bệnh của bà càng thêm trầm trọng v́ các biến ứng sau giải phẫu gây đau đớn. Gần đây các bác sĩ đă t́m được cách giảm đau cho bà; và vào ngày 12 tháng 9 vừa qua bà và các con đă dọn sang một townhouse ở đường Monticello Dr., Falls Church. Cùng ngày đó, với sự thỏa thuận của chủ nhà cho thuê, nhà thờ chúng ta kêu hăng chuyên môn gắn chiếc cầu cho bà (xin xem h́nh). Phí tổn mua chiếc cầu vừa bằng số tiền chúng ta thu được từ hồi đầu năm. Bà hết ḷng cám ơn quư vị về từ tâm, và chúng ta tạ ơn Chúa về t́nh thương thể hiện trong cộng đoàn.
- Giám mục Ted Gulick, Phụ Tá Giám Mục Virginia, sẽ thăm nhà thờ chúng ta vào Chúa Nhật, 4 tháng 12. Mục Sư Tỉnh sẽ tổ chức lớp học cho quư vị muốn gia nhập nhà thờ Episcopal hay chuẩn bị cho lễ báp tem.
- Vào cuối tuần October 7-9, tại Trung Tâm Shrine Mont, cách nhà thờ khoảng 1 tiếng 45 phút đi xe hơi, sẽ có sinh hoạt cho các em Lớp 8. Mục Sư Tỉnh khuyến khích các em Lớp 8 của nhà thờ tham dự. Đây là một sinh hoạt do thiếu niên trong Giáo Phận hoạch định và tổ chức với sự hướng dẫn của người lớn. Phí tổn dự trại là $150. Xin phụ huynh cho Mục Sư biết nếu có con em muốn tham dự.

Tóm Tắt Bài Giảng Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Theo truyện tích trong Phúc Âm Mathiơ, một môn đệ của Đức Giêsu hỏi Ngài nếu có người trong Hội Thánh xúc phạm ḿnh th́ tha thứ bao nhiêu lần là đủ? Có phải là bảy lần chăng? Đức Giêsu bảo, "Không, phải tha bảy mươi bảy lần."
Tha thứ là thách thức lớn nhất trong lời dạy của Chúa chúng ta. Trong bài cầu nguyện Chúa dạy có câu, "Xin tha tội cho chúng con, như chúng con cu~ng tha cho kẻ phạm lỗi nghịch cùng chúng con."
Chúa kể chuyện người đầy tớ không chịu tha nợ cho bạn ḿnh mặc dù chính ḿnh đă được chủ tha một món nợ lớn. Chủ nổi giận, bắt người đầy tớ không tha thứ giam vào ngục để bị tra tấn hành hạ. Quư vị và tôi có thể hiểu rằng người chủ trong truyện chỉ về Thiên Chúa. Ḿnh là ai trong chuyện đó? Chính sự căm giận của ḿnh giam hăm ḿnh trong cảnh tù đày của linh hồn, làm cho ḿnh dằn vặt khôn nguôi.
Khi Đức Giêsu dạy rằng phải tha bảy mươi bảy lần, Ngài không có ư nói là đếm bao nhiêu lần, mà là không thể đếm được.
Câu hỏi của người môn đệ liên quan đến chuyện tha thứ nhau trong Hội Thánh, song ư áp dụng là cho mọi trường hợp, mọi người. Khi nói đến tha thứ th́ ta nghĩ ngay đến chuyện tha thứ cho cha mẹ, cho vợ hay chồng, cho anh, chị, em, người cùng làm việc trong sở, người chủ, hoặc bất cứ ai khác. Tha thứ cho người ngoài có thể là dễ hơn cho người trong nhà. Đức Giêsu c̣n nói đến chuyện tha thứ cho kẻ thù. C̣n chuyện tha thứ cho chính ḿnh th́ sao?
Có những chướng ngại vật cản trở sự tha thứ. Nếu chúng ta lớn lên trong một gia đ́nh không ai tha thứ cho ai, th́ chắc chắn không học tha thứ. Thế giới chúng ta không khuyến khích chuyện tha thứ. Vào ngày 11 tháng 9 chớ nên nhắc chuyện tha thứ cho kẻ thù.
Tha không có nghĩa là quên. Vết thương tuy lành, song sẹo vẫn c̣n. Tuy nhiên, "bảy mươi bảy lần" có nghĩa là mỗi khi nhớ đến sự vi phạm xưa th́ chúng ta lại tha thứ lần nữa. Tha thứ là lối sống cho tất cả những ai xưng ḿnh là môn đệ Đức Giêsu. Thiên Chúa đă tạo dựng con người theo h́nh ảnh Thiên Chúa. Mỗi người, dù là một em bé, đều có quyền tha thứ cho người khác.
Ở tiểu bang Pennsylvania có một làng Amish tên là Nickel Mines. Người Amish từ lúc cha ông họ từ Âu Châu sang Mỹ định cư sống hiền ḥa, đơn giản và giữ niềm tin trong cộng đoàn chặt chẽ của họ. Th́nh ĺnh vào ngày 2 tháng 10, 2006, một người đàn ông mang súng vào trường học cho con gái Amish. Hắn bắn lung tung, đạn trúng mười em và gây tử thương cho năm em, rồi hắn tự sát. Trước sự ngạc nhiên của người ngoài, cộng đoàn Amish tuyên bố họ đă tha thứ cho kẻ giết con em ḿnh. Không phải chỉ có thế, họ đă đến thăm người vợ kẻ sát nhân để nói lời yên ủi (bà đó về sau đă viết cho người Amish một lá thư đầy xúc động).
Dư luận không có thể tin được chuyện ấy, và có người cho rằng người Amish không đối diện được với thực tại, nếu không nói là ngu xuẩn. Được hỏi tại sao và bằng cách nào họ có thể thực ḷng tha thứ, một đại diện của làng Amish nói rằng sở dĩ họ tha được là v́ họ có ḷng tin sâu xa về sự tha thứ: lời dạy về tha thứ đă thẩm thấu trong tim họ từ khi c̣n bé; v́ vậy, trong t́nh cảnh nầy họ đă chọn tha thứ, theo lời dạy và gương tha thứ của Đức Giêsu. Bà c̣n nói thêm rằng khi thực hiện sự tha thứ th́ ḿnh phải có sự hỗ trợ của cả một cộng đoàn.
