The Vision of St. Patrick's

Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care, called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world.

About St. Patrick's Church

Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church.  The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School.  The building was completed in 1956.  Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish.  In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural.  Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love.  Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest.  Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them.  Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts:  St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Parish Notes

-  Our Frankie, MyChi and Meili Haan went to Belgium in July.  One of the highlights of their trip was visiting the Basilica that Frankie's maternal grandfather designed.   His name, Paul Rome, is inscribed on the building in stone.  There is a statue of Mary and Jesus in the church, and the model for Jesus was Frankie's Aunt Badette, who was that age at the time -- the sculptor used Badette as a model.   Many thanks to Frankie for sharing the pictures with us.

The focus of the job is to facilitate and develop a program for children and youth K-12, with an emphasis on the 6th through 12th grades.   Prior experience and responsibility involving the education, spiritual formation and social interaction within a parish and surrounding community is highly desired. St. Patrick's would like to fill this position in September 2011. Aid for Somali Refugees in Kenya.  On July 20, the United Nations declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia. The food shortage is the consequence of a sustained drought that is said to be the worst in more than 50 years. Reports indicate that over 800,000 people have fled Somalia as a result, many seeking refuge in the neighboring countries of Kenya and Ethiopia. In response to the developing crisis, Episcopal Relief & Development will be working through its network of Anglican and Episcopal partners to support the humanitarian work of local organizations such as Ukamba Christian Community Services in Kenya.

Amidst the drought, famine and massive influx of Somali refugees, the Kenyan government has declared a state of emergency. According to recent assessments, national grain stores do not have enough food to supplement the meager reserves of local farmers, whose crops failed this year due to drought. The food needs of several hundred thousand refugees cannot be met without outside assistance. Currently, the government is trying to address the situation by supporting the efforts of local non-government partners, but only a small section of the population is being reached. Most of the feeding programs are focused on school children, excluding parents and those not in school from receiving critical nourishment.

Episcopal Relief & Development's support will be used to provide food aid (including maize, beans and cooking oil) to as many as 1,320 households in four areas over the next five months. Orphans, widows and the elderly will receive priority during distribution. The program will also support community efforts to prepare the land for the next rainy season, with soil and water preservation measures such as terracing and sand dam construction. Rains are expected between November and December 2011.

Please pray for all those affected by drought and famine in East Africa, and especially for those who have fled their homes in search of food and water for survival. Please also pray for the return of rains, and healthy harvests in the future.  Please

click here to make a contribution online, or make check payable to Saint Patrick's Church, and please write "Somalia" on the memo line.  You may put the check in the alms basin during worship on Sunday, or mail it to St. Patrick's, 3241 Brush Dr., Falls Church, VA 22042.

-  The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church invites Episcopal communities of all kinds to open the doors of their institutions the weekend of September 10 and 11, 2011 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the attacks with acts of prayer and remembrance, service, creativity, inter-faith cooperation, education, community building, and fellowship, offering our institutions as active, accessible sites of healing for our local communities.   There will be a service of Evening Prayer at Saint Patrick's on Sunday, September 11, 2011, at 5:00 PM.

All are invited to attend the Small Church Day, an annual event organized by the Diocese's Commission on Congregational Missions (CCM).   An email from CCM reads, "This year's meeting will be a very special celebration of the life and ministry of Bishop Jones.  We are hoping that all our mission churches will be able to join us on Saturday, October 29, at Christ Church, Spotsylvania, for this joyful occasion.  Bishop Jones will be our speaker in the morning sessions to tell us about his life, his call to the priesthood, and his theology of spiritual gifts.  After lunch we will celebrate the Eucharist together.  All churches are encouraged to bring their church banners (and stands) for display in the parish hall. There is a $10.00 registration fee this year to help cover the cost of lunch."   Note: Tinh+ hopes that many members of St. Patrick's will attend the event, as St. Pat's looks forward to being recognized as a parish in early next year.

A Thank You Note

Mary Isibel's Thank You Note

Note:  This thank you note was from our Mary Isibel, sent to the church several months ago, as she was recuperating after surgery.  We are thankful that, since then, her health has been restored.  Mary was one of St. Patrick's volunteers at Fairfax Hospital.  In fall 2010, she was honored at the hospital, and Fairfact--Mary--link Fairfacts, the newsletter of the Auxiliary of Inova Fairfax Hospital, had an article on Mary's voluntary service. Part of the article reads, "Volunteer Honored for Devotion to Babies  -- There's something about Mary, or more to the point, something about Mary Isibel and babies.  Thousands of babies in Family Centered Care have been rocked, fed, burped, comforted and cuddled by this long time Auxiliary volunteer.  Mary loves babies, and she devoted 17 years to sharing that passion with Inova's tiny patients... Mary has two sons and three grandchildren. Asked if she's already having baby withdrawal, she says, 'It's terrible'."  To see the entire article, please click here.

Sng Thế K32:22-31

Thi Thin 17:1-7, 16

R Ma 9:1-5

Do đu ng c thể ni như thế?
