A New Name and a New Look

for Advent's Laurel Home!

Advent's Laurel group home for boys was purchased in 1989, and after 23 years of constant use it is in dire need of some major renovation.

In March, Advent submitted a proposal requesting funding to renovate the Laurel home, and in April, Dr. Fran Harvey, of the Sovereign Order of St. John, came out to tour the home and learn more about our program and its needs.

As a result, Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller, St. Joseph Commandery (Sovereign Order of St. John, for short) has selected Advent Group Ministries as a beneficiary of...read more

Concert in the Sky on the

4th of July

One of Advent's challenges is to allow our teens to experience real life -a fun life that is healthy, sober, and free of alcohol and drugs. When kids first come to Advent they often think that's impossible and something they can't even imagine.

But this summer our group home staff was determined to prove otherwise when they took a group of 13 boys to Disneyland.

After a tedious drive in traffic they headed straight for the...read more

Success Doubles at The Refuge

This is an inspiring story about two women who have successfully worked through many problems during their stay at The Refuge - a safe home for moms who seek to maintain their sobriety, overcome personal obstacles, become better parents, and reunify with their children. The Refuge also offers various life skills through the help of volunteers.

Our two successful clients are living proof of that vision as they make positive strides in their lives and the lives of their children.

Before coming to The Refuge, Trisha was living in a Transitional Housing Unit (THU) and was told about The Refuge by her outpatient counselor and probation officer. She had just received custody of her...read more

Step Up! Gets Revved Up

A recent collaboration between Advent's Outpatient Department, and the Santa Clara County office of Education has helped rev up our Step Up! program.

It all began in September 2010, when the Santa Clara County Juvenile Probation Department opened two new county probation schools as part of a test group within the schools. The sites are for teens who are no longer allowed to be placed in their....read more

Quest to the Sierra Nevada Mountains

During the summer the entire boys program, including five staff, had an exciting adventure at Sierra Buttes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Stacy Hall, director of residential recovery services, and David Kissner, teacher, are part of a program called Quest at Crossroads Bible Church-a ministry to inner-city boys. The purpose is to share the good news of Jesus by providing opportunities to enjoy God's creation through local hikes, beach excursions and camping trips.

"During these activities the kids are confronted by God's creation and are exposed to Bible teaching," Stacy says.

"David and I were talking about our summer trips and we thought...read more

September is Recovery Month

Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery from substance use and mental disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible.

This year's theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: It's Worth It", emphasizes that while the road to recovery may be difficult, the benefits of preventing and overcoming mental and /or substance abuse disorders are significant and valuable to individuals, families, and communities.

There are many ways you can help people struggling with addiction...read more

Spiritual Home of Golf

St. Andrews Links in Scotland is famously known as the spiritual home of golf. But Advent considers Los Altos Golf & Country Club to be our spiritual home of golf, and it was in these pleasant surroundings that the 14th Annual Mary and Martha Golf Classic was held on June 11.

Beneath clear blue skies and a blazing sun, the 100-degree heat wave failed to dampen the spirits of Advent's 125 golfers as they headed out on the greens to help raise funds for our troubled teens.

The sporty red hot hole-in-one Ferrari, provided by Clint Ralls...read more
