Internet Slang - be in the know!

LMIRL K?  CYE 4 ADR.  h/o PIR TTYL!*

Do you know what that means? If you're like most adults, you probably don't.  But your teen children or grandchildren likely do!

Text, chat, IM, email, blogs, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter - teens have a seemingly endless array of communication tools at their disposal.  As computers and cell phones have transformed communications, a new dialect has emerged - Internet slang or "netspeak."

Using acronyms, emoticons and other shorthand, teens can communicate conveniently and quickly, while keeping adults "ITD" (in the dark)...read more

Chilling out in the Forest

Winter camping can be very challenging, especially when schoolteacher David Kissner is running the show! He deliberately selected a deserted place in the National Forest just outside the northern entrance to Yosemite National Park, where our kids had a wild time from February 19-21.

David reports, "It is one of many undesignated campsites in the National Forest. There is nothing there except for what I can take in my truck-no bathroom, tables, running water, etc."

He says he likes to stay in remote, undeveloped places for several reasons: 1) it enhances the true wilderness experience for the kids; 2) there are fewer distractions from experiencing God through...read more

DaleFriendship Family Coordinator

In January, Advent welcomed Dale McGowan as the new Friendship Family coordinator. He had previously served 25 years as director of the Foster Care Department and consequently he brings an abundance of experience and expertise to this valuable program.

Dale says, "I want to truly make this a mentoring program, where we have our volunteers help the young people (clients) catch their own vision for their lives regarding their schooling, education and jobs, as well as their own spiritual development and growth."

One purpose of a Friendship Family mentor is to be available...read more

Potpourri of Spring Activities

Our teens always look forward to getting away from the school routine, and this year a number of events had been planned for their spring break.

Saturday, April 7 the Gateway and Laurel kids went to a Hunger Games movie, while the Genesis boys were off to the Morgan Hill Teen Center where they were admitted free! The jocks loved weight lifting, playing basketball, pool, foosball and ping pong. The center also has a large flat-screen TV, Xbox 360, Wii, computers, a healthy snack bar, and a large outdoor patio for the kids to enjoy.

Sunday, April 8 the Summit girls were delighted to wake up to Easter...read more

  Client & Volunteer

Valiant Volunteers are Vital for Victory!

VOLUNTEER: 1) one who enters into or offers himself for a service of his own free will; 2) unpaid helper or assistant.

Individuals and groups volunteer their time to help turn our group homes into functional and pleasant environments for our clients. Recently a crew of workers from Craftsmen for Christ did an extraordinary job renovating the bathroom at the Laurel group home. Everything was ripped out and a new vanity, toilet, floor and shower were installed by Charlie Shambaugh and Richard Langland.

Previous volunteer work-party projects include building and repairing outside decks, landscaping, gardening, interior and exterior painting, and...read more

Recruiting New Staff

From March 21 to 29, several California universities welcomed Molly Maurer, HR assistant, and Girls Program Supervisor Bree Barnet, to their respective campuses.

Career fairs were being held at Biola, Vanguard and Point Loma, and permission was granted to set up tables in well-populated areas at Hope International, Azusa Pacific and California Baptist.

While exposing the students to Advent, Bree and Molly also sought...read more
