Santa's Visit

Celebrating Christmas is very special for our clients, as "a visit from Santa" has usually not been a part of their young lives. Each kid makes a wish list and these are distributed to various churches, community groups and individuals, and soon the gifts come pouring in for our teens.

Bernal Bible Church hosted a Christmas party on December 21 for 15 outpatient clients, with Gerry Foisy, Advent's maintenance supervisor, playing his usual role as Jolly Old St. Nick.

While Santa distributed wish-list gift items, the kids were wide-eyed with disbelief as they received shoes, jeans, shirts, hats, purses and skateboards.

One young man excitedly declared, "I can wear this to a job interview," as he donned his brand new black sweater. Another exclaimed...read more

Thank You Mr. Beall!

As Assemblymember Jim Beall (pronounced "Bell") approaches his retirement from the assembly, Advent would like to thank him for his tireless work on behalf of the kids of Advent.

Elected to the California State Assembly in 2006 to represent the citizens of Campbell and Saratoga, as well as parts of the cities of Santa Clara, San Jose, Cupertino, and Los Gatos, Jim made it a point to visit the Advent homes and to learn about the treatment programs provided...read more

Help Continues for Gilroy's Homeless

In June 2009, in association with St. Joseph's Family Center in Gilroy, Advent received a grant to provide drug and alcohol counseling for homeless adults in Gilroy.

Since that time, Advent's Associate Therapist Bruce Pickett has been working with St. Joseph's Executive Director David Cox, along with Marty Estrada, Family Services Homeless Coordinator, to establish an extraordinary program for homeless men and women who...read more

Fabulous Fall Festivities

As fall leaves fluttered to the ground, chocolate-covered marshmallows were being tossed around by our group-home kids as they reveled in Halloween festivities on October 26 at Gateway and Summit.

The guys' marshmallow relay began as one kid from each team stood on the porch with a bowl of chocolate-covered marshmallows ready to toss to his teammate, who was lying on the ground directly below. The marshmallows were dropped by....read more

The Refuge

 Interview with Tammy Greer

Advent: When did you move into the position of director?

Tammy: The official date was January 16, although it was a holiday.

Advent: What is The Refuge?

Tammy: Simply put, The Refuge is a home for women who are trying to reunify with their children. Each mom gets caught up in her issues and troubles. Some situations are more challenging than others. For these women, they hit bottom when their children are removed from their care.  Most of our women come...read more

Staff Profile:  Barbara Gonzalez

In September 2011, Barbara Gonzalez began her career at Advent as clinical secretary, and has since added outpatient billing to her role.

Born and raised in San Jose, Barbara and her younger brother lived in two foster homes-one when she was between the ages of 5 and 7 and the other from 7 to 19.

"My last foster parents were Christians. In the begining it was difficult, but I came to realize that's where I belonged," she says. "They had two children of their own, and over the years they took in several other foster kids, but my brother and I were with them the longest. I consider them my real family."...read more
