GinaClient Corner from The Refuge

My name is Gina. I am a mother and an addict. On May 15,  2010, my life was turned upside down. I was under the influence and, as usual, I had been arguing with my children's father. The police were called and my children were removed from my custody and I was taken to jail.

On that day I realized that my selfish obsession did not just affect me- my addiction and my actions had my kids removed from the only home they had ever known.

How did I get to this place? Who did I become? I realized my babies must be terrified and confused because we had never been away from them and here I was...read more

According to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), American teens ages 12-17 who in a typical day spend any time on social networking sites are at increased risk of smoking, drinking and drug use.

A PEEK AT ADVENT'S CHRISTMAS

Every year right after Halloween, Development Associate Stephanie Simunic asks the group home and outpatient clients for Christmas wish lists. She says, "The kids come up with everything from clothing ... to makeup ... to electronics."

The wish-list requests are then distributed to individuals, churches, civic organizations and corporations, letting them know what is needed to help give our kids a spectacular Christmas-one like they could not even imagine!

It doesn't come as a surprise that this time of year can be extremely difficult for our teens. Many of them have grown up neglected and have gone through intense physical and psychological trauma. They have seldom felt cared for, especially during...read more

Girls and Staff at DisneylandA Dream Come True at Disneyland

When the announcement was made to the girls at Summit about their upcoming trip to Disneyland, one of the young ladies began to cry.

Girls Program Supervisor Alexandra Fillmore explains, "The teen said she had never had a chance to be a kid and this short trip to Disneyland would encompass more than she'd done in 16 years of summer breaks. She felt genuinely loved and cared for and said she never could...read more

South Valley's New KitchenSpectacular Kitchen Remodel at
South Valley Home

We are overwhelmed with gratitude to a great bunch of guys from WestGate Church in San Jose - hard workers who helped transform our South Valley group home into a much more desirable place for our clients to live.

Every spring, WestGate Church does a mission week called Beautiful Day, which encompasses the entire Bay Area. Work crews go into the community and help clean up, refurbish, renovate, restore, remodel, and just do whatever needs to be done...read more

Advent's 2011 BBQ

The Gateway group home in Gilroy is where 198 guests gathered for Advent's 19th annual barbecue on September 24 - the largest turnout ever!

The tables were creatively decorated with treasure boxes, which aptly represented the "hidden treasures" in our clients who are striving to be released from the bondage of alcohol and drugs.

The awesome aroma of barbecued tri-tip filled the air as Bob Mancini and his "galley of chefs"-Tony Mannino, Ryan Brown, Scott Selvester, Ray and Josiah Wylie, and Steve Silveira-busily geared up for the delectable dinner. Along with the tri-tip...read more

Van from SFCThanks for the Van, SFC!

To Our Wonderful Friends at Saratoga Federated Church (SFC)...

Thank you so much for selecting Advent to be a recipient of Saratoga Federated Church's Lenten offering. Throughout Advent's 25 years of ministry, SFC has been a faithful and generous friend.

We are so humbled by your generous gift for the purchase of a new eight-passenger van for our group home program.

With the exception of our homes, a vehicle in good repair is our most valuable asset. The last van that SFC purchased for our program transported Advent's kids ...read more
