"Happy New Year!"
At Balfour, we are looking forward to a new year filled with progress and opportunity! In 2010 we were busy setting the stage for a strong 2011. Our website, www.balfourcare.com, has been re-designed to be a more comprehensive resource for all visitors: information-rich and easy to use. Balfour is expanding our role within the Boulder/Louisville communities; a more robust program with the Colorado University School of Music that brings musical performances to Balfour and the CU Professor series which hosts faculty lectures. We are proud to offer many of these programs free and open to the public. Our philanthropic role in the community is also growing: for the third year Balfour sponsored the Annual Boulder County Hospice Charity Polo event and we were title sponsor for the CU School of Music and Boulder Community Hospital charity fundraiser, "Frank Loesser, I Believe In You" musical production at the Boulder Dinner Theater
We are also taking advantage of the latest technology to improve our efficiency and quality of life for residents. At Balfour Retirement Community, our assisted living, skilled nursing and advanced memory care community, we've launched an electronic medical records (EMR) system. The state-of-the-art EMA system will not only take us paperless and ensure better and more consistent HIPPA compliance several years in advance, but most importantly, allow us more time to spend on resident care. Our residents will also be able to take advantage of the latest technology—several iPads have been recently purchased so our residents can communicate to the world as well as enjoy the latest applications. iPad instruction and classes are now available for residents in their community as well as the local Apple store.
And we are very pleased to be starting out the year with an exciting and beneficial development, the grand opening of "Internal Medicine Associates at Balfour," a joint venture with Boulder Community Hospital. The medical clinic will be staffed with a physician who specializes in gerontology and internal medicine and a nurse practitioner—it will be open 5 days a week to Balfour residents and to the public.
I invite you to go to our website at www.balfourcare.com for more information about our community and the many special events we have planned for 2011!

New! Intro to the History of World Art Course
Monday, Feb. 7 and 14 in the Residences Library
This 16-week art historical lecture series will provide an introduction to the visual arts from a wide variety of times and places across the globe. Though we cannot hope to examine all the art that exists, investigation of some key monuments can give us new insights into our own history and culture, as well as those of others. Course is taught by Aubrey Wilder.
Aubrey Wilder is the Assistant Curator at the CU Art Museum and a lecturer for the Continuing Education department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from New College of Florida, a master's degree in Museum Studies from JFK University in Berkeley, California, and a second master's degree in Art History from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her research focuses primarily on the Art of the Americas, specifically Colonial Mexico, but she also has strong interests in the Italian Renaissance and museum practice. Aubrey is a Colorado native and an aspiring folk artist.
