April  2011

greekday Lincoln University students join our scholars for Black History Month, the history of Black colleges and universities, and the history of  Black sororities and fraternities.
Thank you Lincoln University!

Dear Friends of BHGH,

Six years ago, five years ago and four years ago three boys first stepped foot inside Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore.  In two months, three young men will graduate from Boys Hope Girls Hope and go to college.  They have triumphed in this incredible journey they have chosen with the support of Boys Hope Girls Hope!  We are proud of them, and honored to be a part of their success! Matthew has been accepted at William and Mary College on early decision.  Dwayne has been accepted to Loyola University and is very excited.  Arthur has been accepted at Wheeling Jesuit and McDaniel, but has not yet decided.  As you can see, all of their hard work and dedication is paying off and it has made a significant impact on those scholars coming behind them.  Currently we have a waiting list of   boys wanting to enter our program, and follow in their footsteps.

Our girls are also thriving and learning the hard work and territory that comes with being a Girls Hope Scholar.  We will be accepting new girls over the summer months, and are excited to continue to grow our program.  The boys and girls are preparing for an enriching summer.  One of our girls will be going to the Putney School for a writing program.  Four of our scholars will be doing internships with Johns Hopkins University.  Other scholars are applying to: dance camps, sports camps, Girl Scout camps, and leadership programs.

Doubling our program has given us many miracles and many wonderful achievements.  We have also doubled our operating expenses, and continue to rely on the generosity of individuals, community members, corporations, and businesses.

In a few months, we will have EIGHT collegians.  The first group of boys that graduated BHGH will be seniors in college next year.  Our program is working, and we look forward to sharing their successes as they start finding their way in the real world once they are out of school.

In each newsletter you will find updates on our scholars and collegians and can celebrate their successes with us!  This month read about Charles Booth, a sophomore at Calvert Hall

Finally, we are looking forward to our tenth annual golf tournament on April 29th, 2011.  Please join us by registering here.  We hope to see you all out on the golf course April 29th!

Looking back, it has been one year since we started talking to Extreme Makeover about the possibility of building us a girl's home.  This year has been nothing short of a miracle, and we are grateful to everyone who has walked through our doors, or given of their time, money, or talent.  We would not exist if it wasn't for the kindness of all of you.

Meet Charles, a Boys Hope Scholar

The advice Charles, a Boys Hope scholar and sophomore at Calvert Hall  would give to any new scholar joining Boys Hope  is for them to be themselves and not try to be someone they are not. He added that anything that needs to be worked out will be worked out once you get in here.
