CNN Special Reports on Military Mold: Toxic Homefront |
Home / News (TransWorldNews)
Military families say that their homes are infested with mold. Many of the aging homes have deteriorated due to water damage, persistent leaks and mold with military families falling mysteriously ill.
CNN special Toxic Homefront reported this past weekend about the extreme dire condition of some the military housing in the US and the health hazards posed by poor indoor air quality (IAQ), more specifically mold. CNN hosts Drew Griffin and Randi Kaye discussed the mold problems in military housing near the Norfolk, VA Naval Base after it was turned over to a private contractor, Lincoln Military Housing, a few years ago. Public health officials are bracing for more cases of Legionnaire's Disease in Auckland.
Three new cases were notified over the weekend, bringing the total over the past nine weeks to 15.
One person has died.
Dr Simon Baker says the latest cases are in the Waitemata District Health Board area.
"We're still very much looking for the source but the fact that the cases have been spread all over the region means it's probably more than one source and it's going to be extremely difficult to tie down."
Dr Baker says the only way to stop the spread of the legionella bacteria is for all building owners to shock-dose their cooling towers.

The Risks of Radon ...now is a very good time to test your home for radon... |
By George James | LymeLIne.com
Radon alone is attributable to 2,900 deaths a year from lung cancer and is responsible for about half of our total lifetime exposure to radiation.
It is a heavy, colorless, odorless gas that emerges from the ground and collects in cellars and the lower floors of houses, especially in the months when windows are closed and heating draws radon through any leaks or below-ground openings into the house.
It is easy to test for radon. Very inexpensive test kits are readily available online...

Dangerous Mold Problem at Union Gap City Hall ...no one knew where to find the mold until last Friday, when black specks fell from the court clerk's office... |
by David Mance - kapptv.com
Union Gap may need to look for a temporary city hall while crews clean up hazardous mold found in the building. Now more on where the mold may have come from, and the steps the city is taking to deal with the problem.
Teresa Buck is at Union Gap City Hall reserving a city park for a birthday party, and is wondering if she should be worried about the building's mold problems.
"I was thinking I was going to be in and out, so it does raise a little concern," says Buck.
Authorities have known about mold since last year, after employees reported getting sick from fumes and tests confirmed the problem.
