Washington, DC -- It's one thing to work in a well-kept and maintained building, but is it also a healthy workplace?  While your office may look sparkling clean to the eye, there are a number of invisible factors that can seriously affect the health of your workplace.  Chief among them is the quality of the air your building occupants breathe while indoors.

What's the problem?  Up to 72 trillion microscopic irritants, or allergens, find their way into your offices every day.  They include dust, pollen, dander, dust mites, insect biodetritus, lint, mold, mycotoxins, chemicals, mycotoxins, formaldyhyde, fiberglass and bacteria.  Many of these particles are so small that...

More than 60 million Americans suffer from severe allergies or asthma, and the number of individuals who suffer from seasonal allergies has nearly doubled over the past 15 years, according to industry research and published reports.

Indoor environmental screening of the home or work environment is important for individuals with allergies, chronic sinusitis, rhinitis, emphysema, asthma, atopic dermatitis, immune deficiencies, etc.  In keeping with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) 1997 recommendations, it is desirable to...

Queens Family Suffering Health Problems from Mold-Infested Jamaica Home City Housing Authority denied emergency transfer though violations show immediate hazard

by Vera Chinese / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Inky-black mold spores speckling a Jamaica home have left a Queens family unable to breath easy.

Patrina Smith, who receives Section 8 rent subsidies first noticed the toxic fungi in February 2011, a month after she, her two daughters and granddaughter moved in to the two-family home.

Spores have now overtaken the walls, floors and furniture, making the apartment, by many accounts, uninhabitable. But Smith cannot move until she gets approval from the city Housing Authority, which administers the federally subsidized program.

"I should not have to live like this," Smith said while showing the mold-ravaged home to the Daily News. "It's so disgusting."

19 Courthouse Employees Sue Broward Saying Building Made Them Ill Meanwhile, construction of new courthouse delayed

by Brittany Wallman, Sun Sentinel

Nineteen current and former employees of the Broward County Courthouse have sued the county, arguing the building is "sick" and so are they.

The employees say the county's courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale is infested with toxic mold and that tiny asbestos fibers float through the air, exposing the public and the employees to health dangers. They want financial compensation for their illnesses, and they want the courthouse evacuated, among other requests.

"I think the county totally neglected this courthouse," said attorney and former state Sen. Skip Campbell, whose firm is handling the cases. "They are not doing their job."

DENVER - A northeast Denver family is fighting for a healthy home. They had a mold clean-up job done in December, but say the mold still exists.

The family contacted 4 On Your Side Consumer Investigator Jodi Brooks for help. She organized different mold tests. CBS4's test results confirm high levels of mold still in the home.

A bathroom tested high, and so did the master bedroom. CBS4's test results now have the attention of the people in charge of the remediation project.

Quote of the Week

"Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality.

Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful... Nothing great

was ever achieved

without enthusiasm."
