Tampa, FL -- Mold has become an issue of increasing concern to the general population as lawsuits, media attention and misinformation fuel fires of hysteria.  To further complicate matters, a lack of education and scientific knowledge leads the layperson to correlate the presence of "black mold" with various ailments attributed to "toxic molds".  In order to dispel mold myths and provide professional assistance to the average person concerned about mold contamination, it is critical to understand the complex nature of mold.

According to a recent estimate more than 35 million Americans suffer each year from seasonal allergies. Changes in the season from winter to spring, spring to summer and then summer to fall and winter, is a natural phenomenon; however, in between the changing seasons the environmental factors vary.  The adaptation by living beings sometimes does not occur as quickly as the changing pattern.  Sometimes, some individuals identify these changes with symptoms like sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, fever and itchy watery red eyes, etc. which are rather common and are referred to as "allergies."   It has been observed that the floristic and faunistic composition of the surroundings change according to the shifting season.

Hamilton College Has 'Too Many Issues'

Hamilton College has sat at the corner of Pickens and Pendleton streets since 1943 but has received few improvements since.

 

The 69-year-old building, which houses the anthropology department, is one of USC's largest deferred maintenance projects, estimated to cost the university $15 million to repair.

 

Anthropology Undergraduate Coordinator Claudia Carriere has either been a student or has worked at Hamilton College since 1996, and she said the building has "too many issues" including mold, lead paint and asbestos.

 

The electrical system also needs improvement because the current system can't handle extra electricity or the fuses will blow, Carriere said. In addition, the water in Hamilton is unsafe to drink due to contamination, so those who use the building must drink from a stand-alone water cooler.

Three Resort Guests Die From Legionnaires Disease Outbreak

Calpe, Spain -- The bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease was found in water samples at the four star Diamante Beach resort in Calpe, Spain this month after three Britons died of the form of pneumonia according to the regional health department.

 

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia.  It is usually caused by breathing in the mist from hot tubs, showers or air conditioning units, cooling towers contaminated by legionella. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches and a high fever. It usually develops 2 to 14 days after exposure.
