Dangerous Bacteria Isolated in Healthcare HVAC Evaporator Coils |

A recent study suggests that doctors may want to monitor the environmental condition of their air conditioners evaporator coil before surgery to help prevent the spread of bacterial infections. Dr. Rajiv Sahay, Laboratory Director at Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDLab) and his colleagues sampled evaporator coils in healthcare air handling systems and isolated Pseudomonas aeruginosa a known noscocomial pathogen. This bacterium is listed as fourth most common cause of noscocomial infection and accounting for 10.1% of all hospital acquired infections. According to an estimate by the CDC four patients out of every 1000 discharges gets infected by P. aeruginosa.

RALEIGH - Extreme summer heat and recent rains have combined to increase the potential in corn for a mold byproduct that can be harmful to humans and livestock, the N.C. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is encouraging farmers to have their corn tested for aflatoxin - a byproduct of the mold Aspergillus flavus - to prevent contamination of feeds and food.
"It's very important that farmers have their corn tested," Troxler said in a press release.
Some farmers may need to have corn samples tested for crop insurance or quality assurance purposes.BRUNSWICK, N.J.: - In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene with its devastating rainfall and subsequent flooding, a dramatic increase in the amount of mold found inside and outside the home can be expected.

Mold Removal in Homes, Offices Could Cut Respiratory Illness |

A new evidence review finds that ridding homes and offices of mold and dampness can help reduce respiratory infections and troubling symptoms for asthma sufferers across the globe; however, the best way to eliminate the mold remains unclear.
Mold is one of the most important environmental triggers of symptoms such as coughing and wheezing, according to National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
"Mold is found in many homes with basements, in apartments and walkouts that are partially or fully below ground, and in buildings that have been flooded or have poor humidity control," said Peter Thorne, head of the occupational and environmental health department at the University of Iowa. "Homes and office buildings alike have problems."

High amounts of mold have been discovered in three Willingboro, N.J. schools, forcing one to close for at least five days.
The Willingboro School District announced that it has found mold in the Willingboro High School, Memorial Middle School and J.C. Stuart Elementary School, reports phillyburbs.com.
The high school will be closed for no less than five days. The middle school and elementary schools remain open, but school officials say students are being kept away from the moldy areas.
