Homes and buildings in general are constructed and retrofitted with energy conservation in mind. Often we hear that architects, builders and construction codes are requiring tighter building enclosures. However, despite thatBuilding-Sciences-3.jpg ASHRAE has recommended mechanical ventilation for homes since 2003, many of this these buildings lack adequate ventilation.

 

 On one hand, people love that "new home smell".  In fact, some home magazines give instructions to homeowners trying to sell their home on how to achieve just that; allegedly, to lure potential buyers.

 

On the other hand, physicians are seeing and increasing incidence of allergy asthma, but are not sure whether the environment, diet, lineage or the amounts of time we spend indoors or outdoors are...

Fungal Infection Contributes to Joplin Tornado Deaths

JOPLIN, Mo. - A rare fungal infection caused by mold spores in airborne dirt, wood and other debris has contributed to the death of at least four victims of the May 22 tornado, health officials report.

 

They said the infection, known as mucormycosis, penetrates the body through puncture wounds and lacerated skin. It was detected a week after the tornado in several hospitalized victims..

Moldy Homes Tied to Children's Asthma, Allergies Children who live in water-damaged, moldy homes, especially those with visible mold, have higher risks for asthma and allergies than their peers, according to a study.

The study, which reviewed 61 international studies conducted since the 1990s, underscores the importance of not only getting rid of visible mold, but also preventing it in the first place, said coauthor Christina Tischer, of the German Research Center for Environmental Health.
 
"Home environment with visible mold and mold spore exposure increase the risk for allergic respiratory health outcomes in children," she wrote in the European Respiratory Journal.

Nine Die in Alabama During Bacteria Outbreak

BIRMINGHAM - Nine patients in Alabama have died after receiving intravenous nutrition that authorities say was contaminated, but it was unclear whether the bacteria contributed to the deaths.

Alabama authorities said they were investigating an outbreak of Serratia marcescens bacteremia, a bacterial infection in the blood, in 19 patients at six hospitals in the state..
