Dirty DuctWashington, DC - With Asthma Awareness Month upon us the question everyone must ask is "what are the reasons asthma prevalence rates have jumped sharply in the U.S.?" With all the knowledge base data, reductions in outdoor air pollutants, no smoking policies instituted, greening of new buildings, increase medications, then why is asthma prevalence increasing today? Can deferred maintenance be a reason? 
 

Wozniak's team "found a direct correlation between a decrease in maintenance or deferred maintenance and an increase is occupant complaints."

NHS Unsure When Landmark Hotel's Leisure Club will Reopen

NHS Tayside cannot say when the Landmark Hotel in Dundee will be allowed to reopen its leisure club facilities following a confirmed case of Legionnaires' diseases.
 

The hotel's leisure club and spa have been off limits since March 17 after staff and guests reported feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms that sparked testing for legionella infection.

EWG Investigation: Hair Straighteners Release Potent Carcinogen

Obama Administration Moves to Curb Toxic Salon Service
 

Washington, DC -- The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a health hazard alert to salons nationwide about the risks that popular hair straightening products, including well-known Brazilian Blowout, pose to salon workers and customers. The agency warned that formaldehyde - a common ingredient in many of the treatments - can cause nose and lung irritation and increases the risk of cancer.

Potentially Toxic Fungus at Troubled Fresno Condo Complex

A condo complex already facing foreclosure is now dealing with potentially toxic fungus as well. Tuscany Villas is on Fruit just north of Herndon in Northwest Fresno.


Action News first reported about foreclosure proceedings in January and a follow-up uncovered the new problems. Several residents have reported illnesses and breathing problems after noticing something black growing in their units. They thought it might be toxic black mold, but test results in one apartment show a different problem -- a black fungus that's also potentially toxic.
