4 Miami Valley Hospital Patients Have Legionnaire's Disease

DAYTON, Ohio -- Miami Valley Hospital is trying to pinpoint the source of Legionnaire's Disease in its new building. So far, four patients are sick.

Meanwhile, a former patient is upset that he was never notified about the risk and found out about it after watching a report on WHIO-TV.

David Smith of Fairborn said he was shocked to hear that he may have been exposed to Legionnaire's Disease. He was a patient at Miami Valley Hospital early in the week and did not find out about the water contamination in the new hospital addition until he saw it on

Newscenter 7.

A local woman was awarded damages from a Salisbury apartment complex for health problems she says resulted from mold in her apartment.


Kelly Hosch was awarded $5,750 following a Monday hearing in small claims court. The amount includes attorney fees.

FORT MONMOUTH N.J. - Residents in flood-damaged homes should begin cleanup as soon as it is safe to re-enter their houses because mold can create serious health problems, according to disaster recovery and health officials.

"Taking the time to clean thoroughly before mold grows is the most important preventive step a homeowner can take," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer, Bill Vogel.  "Just because the basement has dried out doesn't mean there can't be trouble lurking down the road."
