| Simple Tips for Photographing Fall Colors | | |
Tip - It Is Not Too Late To Get Colorful Fall Photos
Even though trees have lost leaves in some parts of the country, it is not too late to get some great photos of fall colors. The date that a tree loses its leaves depends on its species and physical location. Trees in protected locations sometimes lose their leaves later than trees that are more exposed. Look around, and you can often see some colorful trees or shrubs, even when most of the other trees have lost their leaves.
Tip - Sunshine Really Helps
Sunlight brings out the brilliance of fall colors. The best time to photograph individual trees or groups of trees is in the morning or late afternoon, when the low sun angle spotlights the trees. Stand in a clearing or open space, away from the tree or trees. Sunlight coming from the side brings out the texture of the trees. You can try other angles, but avoid taking photos toward the sun unless you are looking for silhouette effects.
For mid-day photos, go underneath the trees or into a grove. Point your camera upward. Position yourself so that a thick tree limb or tree trunk covers the sun. That way, you will get the translucent colors of the leaves without the glare of the sun. Also, if you are in thick grove of trees, look around you. Shafts of filtered sunlight hitting the forest floor make interesting photos. Tip - What To Do If the Sun Is Not Shining
Unfortunately, the sun will not always be shining when you are ready to take your fall photos. Do not despair! Keep your camera with you at all times, and keep your eyes open for photo opportunities such as brief breaks in the clouds that can produce dramatic lighting effects for your fall color photos. If you see a colorful tree or group of trees traveling to or from work, stop your car and roll down the window for that great opportunistic shot.
Even when you are running errands, you might have a chance of getting some great photos in unexpected places. For example, you might see a colorful tree in a shopping mall parking lot.
It is not necessary to photograph the whole tree. Close-ups of groups of leaves or individual leaves make interesting photos. The leaves can be on the tree, on the ground, or on any other background. Sunlight, the diffuse light of a cloudy day, or the sharp light of your flash, can all work well. Try photographing with and without your flash to see which looks best.

| How to Get Interesting Halloween Photos | | |
Tip - Do Not Wait Until Halloween
Do not wait until Halloween to start taking your photos. During the days preceding Halloween:
- Walk around your neighborhood to observe and photograph your neighbors' decorations.
- Look for interesting Halloween decorations in other places, such as stores, shops and malls.
Halloween decorations often have interesting lighting effects:
- Capture them at twilight or at night.
 - Photograph with and without your flash, to see which way looks best.
Photographs taken in dim light or at night can look blurry because of slight movements of the camera. Many of the newer cameras have features, such as image stabilization, and high light sensitivity (high ISO), that eliminates most of the blur. However, keeping your camera steady will produce the best results: - Attaching your camera to a tripod is the best way.
- Placing your camera on a convenient object, such as a fire hydrant, mailbox, fence post or automobile is another way.
- Holding your camera against a solid object, such as a light pole or traffic sign, is a third way.
Tip - Take Candid Photos of Children and Adults in Costumes
With a digital camera, you can take many photos, and delete all but the best. This makes it easy to get good candid photos of children and people:
- When you first start taking photos, your subjects are often rigid and self-conscious. However, if you keep taking photos, your subjects will begin to ignore you and start to look natural.
- Walk around and photograph your subjects from many different angles.
- If you are using a flash, try to avoid taking face-to-face photos because this will increase the likelihood of red eye.
- Sometimes you can photograph interesting reactions by saying something unexpected such as "boo!" or "look out!", but be careful not to scare younger children.
The reactions of children seeing themselves in their costumes for the first time can make interesting photos: - Photograph into a mirror while standing slightly off to one side (to prevent glare from the flash).
- Have the costumed children walk up to the mirror and photograph their reactions.
- Do not stop with one photograph.
- Ask the children to talk about the characters that they are portraying, and to do some imitations of those characters, as you take additional photographs.

Custom Photo Day Planners
Our unique, custom photo day planners are very popular with our customers. Here is what Catherine Guidi-Scherm had to say about creating her own day planner:
"Last spring I was having a hard time organizing my volunteer work, visiting family out of state, kids activities, etc. I don't use a Smart phone or have any type of electronic organizer...it just seems like it would take up too much of my time. I wanted something that I could personalize but small enough to fit in my tiny purse with my wallet and phone. I checked out other sites but the only thing I could personalize was the cover. Then I found LifePhoto! It had the perfect size planner PLUS I could put pictures within it. I put a Halloween picture at the end of October, my daughter's birthday picture near her birthday! Now I have a great calendar AND I don't have to carry photos of my kids...it is all in one place. Can't wait to make one for the new year!"
