RUSVM Update...

Dean Elaine Watson

RUSVM Faculty, Staff and Students:

Over the past two months, I have had the opportunity to meet with many of you, learning more about the campus, the program and the people. I have been able to gain a stronger understanding about RUSVM's challenges and successes, as well as initiate discussions on adapting to new trends in education while continuing some of the academic principles that have distinguished RUSVM from other veterinary programs.

My early focus has been on our AVMA accreditation, and concentrating on areas that have been identified as needing extra support - research and outcomes assessment. A number of research opportunities have been identified and we need to develop plans to establish a Graduate...  |More|

Ingrid Wolff

In the fall of 2011, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc.
(Hill's) awarded a grant
to RUSVM student, Ingrid Wolff, for the purchase of a functional set of farrier tools for student and school use. Hill's on campus advisors and representatives approved the grant with the shared philosophy of the students currently providing farrier service to the campus horses; to improve student exposure and education relating to proper hoof care of equine patients, and to be mindful of including all aspects of the horse when assessing patient health overall. The tools purchased with the grant are top of the line instruments that practicing veterinarians and farriers use. Students with limited to no equine experience are now able to take a closer look at the hoof care process, familiarize themselves with tools of the trade, and perhaps inspire them to further their education relating to equine hoof health in the future.

Dr. Jennifer Carter and new baby Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Carter, RUSVM assistant professor of Anesthesiology, and husband Matt Baker, who welcomed their daughter, Isla Elizabeth Baker, on March 3, at 4:17 a.m. weighing in at 8 lbs. 9 oz. and was 20 and 1/4 inches long. Mother and baby are both doing well.

Nikol Phillip Each year the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) provides a Free Veterinary Membership for one outstanding senior student who has demonstrated the highest dedication to feline medicine and surgery during their veterinary training. The president and officers of the RUSVM AAFP nominated Nikol Phillips for this award for her involvement in the Feral Cat Project (FCP). For two years, Nikol ran the trap, neuter, release program for feral cats on the island of St. Kitts which included :activities of trapping colonies of cats; setting up spays and neuters, and testing for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV); overseeing the general health and welfare of cats in the FCP's care as well as finding homes for socialized cats. Phillip arranged volunteers for the daily care of the animals, fundraised for financial support, educated the local neighborhoods about the benefits of spaying and neutering animals, and served as the point of contact between the public and the FCP. Phillips also worked with the other officers for feline handling wet labs, journal meeting discussions and new member recruitment.

Congratulations to Dr. Tom Walker, assistant professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Critical Care, and now winner of the first RUSVM Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Walker was voted by members of his faculty peers as being the most outstanding teacher for the year. The decision was based on criteria such as his ability to display energy, and enthusiasm for teaching; his professional growth in his field; as well as how impressed faculty members were with how much his students have learned from his class. Dr. Gilbert Burns, dean for Faculty and Academic Programs and professor of Anatomy presented him with his award at a recent faculty meeting. Check out next month's issue of VetViews for a full faculty focus on Dr. Tom Walker to learn why he won this prestigious award.

Appreciation @RossVet
RUSVM would like to thank the following individual(s) for their service to RUSVM and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Dr. Thierry Beths, assistant professor of Anesthesiology, has worked in the anesthesia department at RUSVM since 2005. He left RUSVM at the end of February to take on a new challenge at the veterinary school in Melbourne, Australia to help develop the anesthesia department. He will continue to teach veterinary students, work on clinical cases and pursue his research interests. Beths said of his time at RUSVM: "Thank you to all of the new doctors and current students that I have had the opportunity to work with while at RUSVM. It has been a real pleasure and honor to know you and to work with you. A book is now closing and another will open soon. When people ask me how I feel, I think it's like the beautiful rainbows our island gives us so often." Thank you, Dr. Thierry "(TB)" Beths, for your service to RUSVM.

Dr. Susan Fitzharris-Beths, assistant professor of Small Animal Medicine, will be leaving RUSVM in March. Having spent nearly six years in St. Kitts working in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Fitzharris says that she feels sad to be leaving. She will be moving to Melbourne, Australia where she will begin as a "stay at home mum" to Isla and the upcoming new baby arrival. She later hopes to either continue with emergency work at the veterinary school clinic there, or return to her original passion and become a mixed animal veterinarian. Fitzharris shares: "I will cherish all the memories from our time here and wish everyone we're leaving behind all the best, especially the doctor who gets my luck on emergency. For all the support everyone has given over the years, I say a big thank you and I will ever be indebted to you. This is a hard place to leave, and the community here is a hard one to move away from, as it is such a supportive one. But I am excited about this new adventure. We will miss everyone immensely. Please keep in touch and there is always room with us if anyone fancies a trip 'down under'." Thank you, Dr. Fitzharris-Beths, for your service to RUSVM.

Dr. Briedi Gillespie, assistant professor of Anatomy, will be leaving RUSVM to take a new position at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Gillespie will teach anatomy (which includes gross, developmental and clinical neuro-anatomy) as well as be the first-year coordinator for the program at the university. Gillespie will also be much closer to her family who are mostly in southeastern Idaho, only two hours away. After four years at RUSVM, Gillespie expressed that it will be hard to leave so many of the friends she has made.  However, one of the benefits of her new position is that she will be on a nine-month teaching appointment.  So she plans on spending her summer months to come back and visit St. Kitts regularly. Thank you, Dr. Gillespie, for your service to RUSVM.

Mr. Seamus Kelly has served as the RUSVM Facilities Director since 2007.  He has been responsible for many of our campus construction projects and has left a lasting mark on the campus landscape both with the physical structures and his "can do" attitude.  Kelly has decided to leave RUSVM, at the end of this month, to begin his own construction company in St. Kitts. Thank you Mr. Kelly, for your service to RUSVM.

Ms. Alison Stewart, who has served as RUSVM's Finance Director since 2001, has been appointed to the position of Finance Director for the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), sister school in the DeVry Medical International family, effective April 1. She will be located in Coral Gables, Florida, where she will oversee the finance and accounting functions of AUC.  During her time at RUSVM, she has provided much advice to students, staff and faculty on working and living within a budget (both RUSVM's and personal) and has been very instrumental in the Live Well program. RUSVM thanks you for your service.
