PAWS Educates Children About Animal Care

The PAWS (People for Animal Welfare on St. Kitts) community organization, directed by Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine students, recently visited Irish Town Primary School to teach students the importance of proper care and treatment of animals. A team of third semester students created a program to educate students in Ms. Dawn Dore's third grade class about pet companionship and animal safety. |More|

St. Kitts Mosquito Survey
| Hamish Mohammed, PhD, RUSVM professor of Epidemiology and Alexander Riley, deputy chief of Environmental Health with the St. Kitts Ministry of Health were joined by entomologist, Joshua Smith, from the Fairfax County Department of Health to conduct a mosquito survey of St. Kitts. The goal of the collaboration was to identify any new species of mosquito and confirm species that were identified in previous surveys completed in the 1970s and 1980s. |More|

10K Run | The "Clive Benjamin Annual Memorial 10K Run" sponsored by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Sports Club will be held on Sunday, November 21 at 4:00 p.m. beginning at the Moravian Church, Cayon.
St. Kitts Studio Tour | Take a self-guided tour of the St. Kitts art and craft studios on Saturday, November 20 beginning at Noon.

 Randolph Belle, mobile patrol driver, received the 1st Quarter 2010 Legacy of Service Award. Belle was nominated for going above and beyond his job description. Students have provided feedback on Belle's level of service to the Ross community, citing his care and compassion for helping others as an important asset. Belle has also taken the initiative to improve fire safety training on campus and has arranged training in the field. Congratulations Randolph Belle for receiving the 1st Quarter 2010 Legacy of Service Award.
Amanda Loftis, DVM, PhD, assistant professor, presented "Panola Mountain Ehrlichia in the US and Its Relation to Heartwater" at the American College of Veterinary Pathologist Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
Glynis McCorkle, 7th semester and Thuy-Vi Nguyen, 6th semester, recently presented highlights from their research under the guidance of Dr. Amanda Loftis. Nguyen presented on "Seroprevalence of Anaplasma marginale in Cattle, Sheep and Goats in the Lesser Antilles." McCorkle presented "Detecting Molecular Prevalence of Infection: A Study of Tick-Borne Disease in Costa Rica." McCorkle is also a Morris Animal Foundation Scholar.
Hamish Mohammed, PhD, recently co-authored a research paper, "An Outbreak of Dengue Fever in St. Croix 2005," which discussed the outbreak of dengue virus serotype-2 and the findings of a case-control study examining risk factors for dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Richard Skalos, clinical year student, who was the Ross University Simmons Education Fund National Business Aptitude Award Winner receiving $3,000. Skalos was the runner-up in the National contest and received $1,000 for his essay. He is currently completing his clinical rotation at the University of Minnesota. Congratulations Richard Skalos, RUSVM is proud of your accomplishments!

Maziel Arauz, DVM, joins RUSVM as an assistant professor of Anatomic Pathology. Arauz completed an anatomic pathology residency at Cornell University and earned her DVM in Panama. She will be a part of the teaching team in 3rd Semester's Pathology I course. |Arauz's Profile|

 Leroy Carter, was recently promoted to information technology analyst. Leroy will be supporting a whole host of internally developed and third-party applications. Leroy has been a team member of the IT Help Desk and Library prior to this promotion.

 Trellor Gillard-Fraites, has been hired as a diagnostic laboratory technician. She brings experience as a certified medical technologist to our program.

Shauna Odie, has changed positions within the Preparatory School and is now serving as the administrative assistant. She was previously a teacher within the school.

Jonathan Peeler, PE, was hired as senior facilities manager to oversee the maintenance, grounds, and housekeeping for RUSVM. Peeler brings engineering experience in both mechanical and civil disciplines and experience from his previous role in facilities at NC State University. Ria Ramoutar, joins Ross as the exam center administrator to provide support in overseeing and scheduling exams. Ramoutar recently completed a master's degree in Educational Technology. She was previously an executive assistant and math teacher at the Preparatory School.

Randolph Belle, Dennis Maynard, Stanley Ottley and Devon Warner are new mobile patrol specialists. The Security Department at Ross recently added an additional mobile patrol vehicle to its force. These staff members have transferred from their previous positions within the Security Department to assist in keeping our RUSVM community members safe.

DeVry le aders, Bill Hughson, president, Medical and Healthcare Group, and Edwin Van Dusen, strategic planning consultant and Ross University's Hal MuCulloch, senior vice president of Administration visited the Vet School campus in November. The team toured the campus facilities and met with students and faculty to learn more about the program. The team took a break by the student center with Dr. Burns and Dr. Fox.
