GIVING THANKS

GRATITUDE ROCK

In the spirit of this Thanksgiving season, we want to express our deep and sincere gratitude to all of our patients who come through the clinic. It is such a joy to be able to offer acupuncture in an affordable and accessible way, and all of you make that possible. It's truly a pleasure treating all of you. We love you!

IT'S TIME FOR

OH MY GOD, THEY'RE TURKEYS!

THE NEW PALTZ TURKEY TROT!

Yep, fall is here, and it's time again for the New Paltz Turkey Trot!

The annual 5K walk/run starts at 9am on November 24th, Thanksgiving Day, at Water Street Market.  It's a fun activity for the whole family, and fundraiser for a great cause.  The event benefits Family of New Paltz, a non-profit agency which provides a food pantry, support groups, shelter, and a 24-hour hotline for families in need.  You can register through the Turkey Trot website until the day beforehand, or you can come early to the event and register there.  Come on out and start your Thanksgiving off in a healthy and giving way!

New Paltz Community Acupuncture is a proud sponsor of the Turkey Trot.

  DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER

GIFT DRIVE

hat and mittens

Give warmth and joy this holiday season!

As we did last year, New Paltz Community Acupuncture is helping out Family of New Paltz  by operating as a collection site for donations of needed items for the Domestic Violence Womens' Shelter.

The Women's Shelter is a vital community resource; it has been profoundly affected by ongoing budget cuts to state-funded human service agencies.  In the spirit of the holiday season, please consider donating to this essential organization; giving one small gift can make a huge difference to women and children in need.  You can donate money, or - even better - items that are needed by women and children in the shelter.  Accepted items include toys, scarves/mittens/hats, diapers (especially pull-ups), sippy cups, underwear and socks for women and children, baby food, towels and linens, laundry detergent, gift cards (Target, Sears, JC Penny, Payless Shoes), pajamas.   You can stop by the clinic for a complete list of suggested donation items.  Please make sure that items are sized for women or children, and are NEW.

The shelter was so impressed by the kindness and generosity demonstrated by our fantastic patients during last year's gift drive. Do us proud again!

Give the Gift of Wellness

gift3

We certainly don't want to preempt Thanksgiving by talking about the next round of holidays too soon, but we know that there are many of you who are deep in the hunt for the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Think about giving those who are closest to you the gift of wellness: a gift certificate from New Paltz Community Acupuncture. We promise to take very good care of them.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:

Fire Cider

   fire cider

Want to boost your immune system this season? In addition to regular acupuncture treatments, you can brew up some Fire Cider, a classic herbal remedy that is often used at the first signs of cold or flu, or as a cold-weather tonic for increased resistance to pathogens. Its ingredients have properties that are anitmicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. Fire Cider can act as an immune stimulant, a diaphoretic (opens the pores and makes you sweat) and a vasodilator. All of the herbs contained in the blend have expectorant properties. In addition to being taken orally, it can also be used topically, as a liniment for chest colds.   Fire Cider improves circulation, helps to remove waste form the body, and activates your mind and body during the cold winter months.

As always, for best results, make sure that all ingredients are organic. You can pick them up at the winter farmers' markets. Also, the High Falls Food Co-op is a great source for local, organic produce; they recently had fresh horseradish roots there.

PLEASE NOTE:  Like all medicinal herbal preparations, Fire Cider is contraindicated for certain conditions.  The herbs in this formula can affect individuals who are taking blood thinning medications or aspirin. This formula should be used with caution by any individual with a sensitive stomach, acid reflux or chronic heartburn, gastric ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, or Crohn's disease.

INGREDIENTS

(Makes 1 quart)

3-inch piece of fresh horseradish root, grated or finely chopped

2-inch piece of fresh ginger root, grated or finely chopped

1 small onion, peeled and chopped

1 head of garlic, peeled and chopped

2 fresh cayenne peppers, chopped; or ½ tsp of dried cayenne powder

Apple cider vinegar

METHOD

Place the ingredients into a sterilized mason jar, filling the jar 1-2 inches below the mouth.

Pour the vinegar over the herbs, making sure there are no air bubbles.

Leave at least ½ - 1 inch between the lid and the vinegar.

Add a layer of wax paper between the jar and the lid, and secure this with a rubber band. This is necessary as the vinegar will corrode the metal lid. Then, seal it with the lid.

Allow the herbs to steep for 2-6 weeks in a dark place.   Shake daily for best results.

Then, use a strainer to separate herbs from vinegar, catching the infused vinegar in a bowl. Take the remaining herbs and put in a thin cloth and squeeze that last vinegar out (be sure to wear latex gloves for this, so you don't get the firey liquid on your hands). Pour into a clean bottle or jar.

You can mix it with some raw local honey before using, for added immune support.

To take as an immune tonic, take 1-2 tablespoons a day.

For acute conditions, take 1-2 tablespoons 3 times a day.

Fire up your immune system this season and enjoy!

WINTER FARMERS' MARKETS

winter market

While most of the winter markets start in December, there will be one at the Gardiner Library on Saturday, November 19th from 11:00-3:00.   Swing by and pick up some fresh, local cold-weather veggies and other goods.

Be well and Happy Thanksgiving!
