BENEFIT FOR HURRICANE RECOVERY
Last month, Hurricane Irene blew through New York and New England, causing devastation to land, property and lives. In New Paltz and surrounding areas, widespread flooding destroyed homes and businesses, and displaced families.
On Sunday, October 16th, New Paltz Flood Aid will be holding a benefit concert in Hasbrouck Park in New Paltz. This all-day (12-7) concert will raise money for the farmers, families, and first responders in New Paltz who were most impacted by the floods. Check out the website for details on prices, bands, sponsoring, etc. Come out and support your friends and neighbors!

New Paltz Celebrates Halloween!
Halloween is just around the corner, and New Paltz is a great place to be for it! The town goes all out for the holiday: a parade, a haunted house at the playground, haunted Huguenot Street, and trick-or-treaters everywhere. And, of course, there's the Bakery, the home of the "Night of 100 Pumpkins". The courtyard of the Bakery is lit up with the creative pumpkin carvings of locals, adults and kids alike.
Prizes are donated by local businesses, including NPCA. So, come up with something creepy, outlandish, or beautiful and maybe you'll win a free acupuncture treatment! Or just stroll through on Halloween night, sipping hot cider and eating pumpkin bread while checking out all of the lit-up masterpieces. I love our town!

Cancer Screening Services
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! What better motivation do you need to take care of yourself?
If you don't have health insurance, you may be eligible for free cancer screenings through the Cancer Services Program of Ulster County. In addition to mammograms, the program covers the cost of Pap tests and colonoscopies. They will also pay for additional diagnostic testing, if necessary. In the event that treatment is needed, they provide assistance in enrolling in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program. Give them a call at 845-339-7896, extension 12. The fight against cancer starts with you!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH:
Fall Kale Sauté

This super simple recipe is a delicious way to use the kale and tomatoes that you can still get at the farmers' markets. It's ridiculously fresh and tasty. Serve it as a side dish, or on its own with some brown rice and olive oil.
2 bunches lacinato (dinosaur) kale, washed and chopped
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1 leek, slice and wash the white part
3 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
olive oil
salt to taste
Sauté the leeks in olive oil until slightly browned.
Add garlic slices and sautee for a few more minutes.
Add tomatoes and some salt, cook for a few minutes, then cover the pot and cook until soft.
Add the kale, stir and cover the pot again. Cook until wilted, but still bright green. Stir it all up and serve.

TMI Fundraiser!
TMI (Too Much Information) is a performance project of non-fiction monologues written and performed by women. Sold-out audiences have raved about, and been inspired by, this project. The women of the TMI project are hoping to expand their services beyond performance. Among their aspirations are workshops with teens and women in need, including the incarcerated. Their vision also includes becoming a non-profit, finding space to work and teach, and creating scholarships. If you want to donate and support this project, check out the TMI website . Every little bit will help them to continue doing the great work that they do.
