Workforce Development and Continuing Education received an Accelerating Advancement Initiative award of $30,000 from the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. The funding initiative will help low-income adults earn postsecondary credentials.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Prince George's Community College a National Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Center grant for its National CyberWatch - Cybersecurity Education Solutions for the Nation project. The grant provides $2,720,986 for fiscal years 2012 and 2013 with the possibility of receiving an additional $2,578,798 for fiscal years 2014 and 2015, based on project success. The total value of the award is $5,299,784.
Prince George's Community College was selected by the Maryland Higher Education Commission as the State of Maryland's recipient of a $2.5 million state designated award under the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program.

PGCC Foundation Honors Partners at Biennial Awards Dinner

The Partners for Success Awards Dinner, a biennial celebration to benefit the Prince George's Community College Foundation, will honor community and corporate partners. Governor Martin O'Malley, NBC4, and the Hillman Family Foundation will be recognized for playing unique and active roles in transforming the lives of students. At the Partners for Success Awards Dinner, the foundation invites leaders in business, government, and education to celebrate the contributions individuals, corporations, foundations, and elected leaders have made to the institution. |

Skerpon and Bridgwaters Simms Selected Chair and Vice Chair of
PGCC Board of Trustees

Lynn Loughlin Skerpon, esquire, and Oretha Bridgwaters Simms have been selected as chair and vice chair of the Prince George's Community College Board of Trustees. The board evaluates and supports the president, serves as a link between the college and the community, and ensures public money is spent wisely. As chair, Skerpon, who was appointed to the Board in April 2010, will act as the official spokesperson, manage all meetings, and appoint representatives to conduct board business. Bridgwaters Simms, a member of the Board since July 2010, will serve as vice chair.

Prince George's Community College alumni Shannon Chiles has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship to study psychology at the University of Toronto in Canada. Chiles graduated from the college in 2008 with high honors and an Associate of Arts degree and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Howard University. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the citizens of the United States and other countries. Grant recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. |

PGCC Participates in the Big Give

On November 14, the 16 community colleges in Maryland will unite for 24 hours of giving. Prince George's Community College will encourage students, employees, and members of the community to support the college in adapting and updating courses, improving technology and infrastructure, and sustaining a dynamic learning environment. The college's Big Give efforts are part of the Purpose, People, Possibilities major gifts campaign.

| Alumni Receives 2012 Ruth Lilly Fellowship |
|
Reginald Dwayne Betts, class of 2007, is one of five recipients of the 2012 Ruth Lilly Fellowship. Awarded by the Poetry Foundation and Poetry Magazine, the $15,000 scholarship is intended to encourage further study and writing of poetry. Betts earned his BA at the University of Maryland and his MFA at Warren Wilson College. He is an author and national spokesperson for the Campaign for Youth Justice and an appointee to President Obama's Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. |
| Book Bridge Project Engages Students and the Community |

The Book Bridge Project at Prince George's Community College, a community-wide reading and engagement initiative, hosts a series of community dialogues about The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Interactive discussion groups, book clubs, poetry workshops, and creative readings are designed to challenge ideas and belief systems relevant to the book, as well as issues in today's society. The book chronicles the life of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells were taken without her knowledge and became one of the most important tools in medicine.

College Establishes PGCC Cares
|

PGCC Cares is a collaborative, cross departmental initiative designed to fulfill the immediate needs of students by providing services, referrals, resources, and supplies. The initiative responds to the needs of an increasing number of students who lack the resources to realize their academic, transfer, and workforce goals. Census data indicates that many Prince George's Community College students lack funds for textbooks, food, and transportation three weeks into class. PGCC Cares will help an estimated 100 students obtain the neccessary resources to complete.

PGCC Honors Latino Culture

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, the college celebrates rich traditions of the Latino/Hispanic community through an array of cultural activities including a film festival, a dance expo, and Spanish lessons. The month's events culminate with a Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Ceremony commemorating the celebration with dance performances, lunch, and an awards ceremony. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. |

Marketing and Creative Services Wins National Awards

The Office of Marketing and Creative Services won the Medallion Award from the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) in an unprecedented 13 categories, including Marketing Campaign and Communications Success Story. Medallion Awards, presented every year, recognize excellence in community college marketing and public relations. The Medallion Awards will be presented on October 15 during the NCMPR District 1 Conference in Pittsburgh.

Community Shred Draws Thousands

The NBC4 Safe & Secure Community Shred hosted by Prince George's Community College provides members of the community an opportunity to safely dispose of personal papers and guard against identity theft. The college partners with NBC4 to offer the service to thousands of county residents who are encouraged to bring up to five boxes of personal documents to the Largo campus and have them shredded for free, courtesy of Shred-it. |

College Celebrates Constitution Day

In celebration of Constitution Day, Prince George's Community College hosted a panel discussion, participated in an office decorating and trivia competition, and distributed pocket constitutions to students and employees. In addition, students and faculty traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend events, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
