Dear Colleague,

dukesWe are welcoming new and returning Prince George's Community College students, as well as students enrolled in the Academy of Health Sciences, Maryland's first middle college high school. The college is opening the Center for Health Studies, a state-of-the-art facility offering education and training in high-demand health care professions. We are remembering 9/11 by encouraging students to participate in service learning opportunities and interfaith dialogue. In addition, Prince George's Community College is congratulating outstanding students, employees, and board members.  Thank you for your support as we continue to Envision Success and transform the lives of our students.

Accolades

Fern Neptune was elected to the Board of Trustees for 2012-2013 as the new student trustee. C. Michael Walls, Esquire was reappointed to the board by Governor Martin O'Malley. To see a full list of the FY2013 Board of Trustees, click here. 

 

Rocco Mennella, professor in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Department at Prince George's Community College, received the 2012 President's Award from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers.

 

Andristine Robinson was selected to serve on the Women in Maryland Higher Education (WIMHE) Executive Board. WIMHE was created to establish a network for the purpose of identifying women leaders and helping them along their journey.

 

Clover Baker-Brown and Mary Dutterer join Diane Finley, Mary Falkey, Andrew Habermacher, Carolyn Hoffman, and Cassandra Moore-Crawford in completing the Quality Master Reviewer Certification through Quality Matters, a faculty-centered, peer review process. 

 

Johnika Dreher was published in the June 2012 edition of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Journal. She co-wrote "Mentoring: Personal Thoughts on the Value of Advance Preparation" with her NACADA mentor.

College Welcomes Students and Faculty 


Prince George's Community College started the fall semester with an array of activities for students and faculty. At New Student Convocation, President Dukes welcomed students to the college, encouraged them to envision success, and stressed the importance of completion. College Life Services presented a host of Welcome Back Week activities including a voter registration drive, pep rally, and health fair. New faculty attended a luncheon to kick off the academic year. Dr. Dukes Elected President of the Maryland State Board of Education 


Charlene M. Dukes, president of Prince George's Community College, has been unanimously named president of the Maryland State Board of Education after serving as board vice president for three years. The Maryland State Board of Education is a 12-member body appointed by the governor to be the voice of the public and policy maker for Maryland's public schools, public libraries, and vocational rehabilitation services.
New Center for Health Studies Expands Training for
Health Care Professionals

Future health care professionals are now taking courses in the new Center for Health Studies at Prince George's Community College. The 100,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility offers education and training in high-demand health care occupations for more than 1,000 students in the Washington metropolitan area. To address workforce shortages, the new facility provides class and laboratory space for new programs including medical assistant, physician's assistant, and surgical technology. Students have access to 26 state-of-the-art labs simulating real-world hospital settings.

Envision Success: Carlos Biaou 


Carlos Biaou is a native of Benin, West Africa where constant problems with electricity inspired him to study engineering. He wanted to return home to his native land and improve the infrastructure. Biaou came one step closer to achieving his dream when he became one of 60 students nationwide to be awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship worth $30,000 per year. He is currently attending the University of Maryland, College Park and studying electrical engineering. To learn more about Biaou, click here.
Senator Ben Cardin Visits Westphalia

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) met with faculty and senior leadership at the college, spoke to students who have completed skilled-trades training programs, and toured Westphalia Training Center. Operated by the college's Workforce Development and Continuing Education area, Westphalia Training Center prepares residents of Prince George's County to quickly reach their goal of obtaining licensure and certification credentials required for in-demand jobs. Lockheed Martin Executive Named President of the Foundation Board

Haden Land, vice president of engineering and chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin's Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS) civil product line, has been named interim president of the Prince George's Community College Foundation, Inc. Land has provided strategic planning guidance during more than two years of service on the foundation board. In 2011, he established the Cathy Jo Land nursing education scholarship at Prince George's Community College in honor of his wife, a community college graduate and experienced health care professional.  

Bluebird Blues Festival
Celebrates 20 Years


Blues legend Bobby "Blue" Bland will headline the 20th Annual Bluebird Blues Festival on Saturday, September 22, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Prince George's Community College. Bobby "Blue" Bland, member of the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has had 23 top ten hits on the Billboard R&B charts. Other performers include renowned blues musician Clarence Carter, Guitar Blues Legend Bobby Parker, and R&B vocalist Yahzarah. Children's activities, music workshops, food, and crafts will engage people of all ages and make this year's celebration an unforgettable experience.

Foundation Dinner Honors Community and Corporate Partners


The Partners for Success Awards Dinner, a biennial fundraising celebration to benefit Prince George's Community College Foundation, Inc., will honor community and corporate partners on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. Governor Martin O'Malley, NBC4, and the Hillman Family Foundation will be recognized for playing unique and active roles in transforming the lives of students by supporting access to affordable, quality education. Guests will enjoy a networking reception, dinner, and presentations.

Sugar Ray Leonard
Participate in Literally Speaking
 


Prince George's County native Roger Leonard, joined by his brother boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, recently discussed his new book, In the Shadow of a Champ: Pathway to Sobriety, during Prince George's Community College Literally Speaking event. In his memoir, Leonard recounts his public success as a boxer and private struggles with drug addiction, rehabilitation and sobriety. Now a certified counselor, he speaks on the topic of dependency across the country.  

College Commemorates September 11 through Service


In an effort to do something good in remembrance of September 11, survivors, family members of victims, first responders, and those who served in the armed forces established the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. In 2009, Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Prince George's Community College will host the first all day 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance centered on the theme, A Call to Serve. Activities planned for the day include a run for veterans, a 9/11 remembrance program, interfaith dialogue, and service workshops.

PGCC Rocks the Vote


Prince George's Community College is encouraging students, employees, and members of the community to register to vote in the 2012 general presidential election. The Office of College Life Services hosted a Rock the Vote registration drive, and the Student Governance Association will continue the effort through September. The campus community is urged to register online or by mail before October 16, the last day to register to vote in the upcoming election.
