dukesOn Thursday, May 24 at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD, the college celebrated the extraordinary achievements of more than 1,100 graduates at the 53rd Commencement Exercises of Prince George's Community College. The graduates were honored to hear personal stories and words of encouragement from Interim Secretary of Education of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Dr. Danette Howard, and the youngest graduate to ever serve as student commencement speaker, Noor Tagouri. The college also is extremely proud of Prince George's County Council Chair Andrea C. Harrison, recipient of this year's Distinguished Alumnus award. Prince George's Community College has so many reasons to be proud as we continue to transform the lives of our students and Envision Success.

Accolades

Communication and Theatre hosted a program open house inviting prospective students to tour the facilities, meet faculty, ask questions, and learn about the behind the scenes work that takes place during a theatre performance, concert, or live event. Prince George's Community College is the only college in the state that offers a certificate in theatre and entertainment technology.

 

The Lady Owls finished sixth among 21 teams in the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Coneisha Smith won first place in the 400-meter dash, second place in the 200-meter dash, and fourth place in the high jump. The 4x400 meter relay team finished second while the 4x100 and 4x800 meter relay teams placed third.

 

Prince George's Community College recently received $1.25 million over five years from the U.S. Department of Education for the Upward Bound Program. The program's objective is to increase core college readiness and critical thinking skills, as well as motivate participants to achieve academic success beyond high school.

College Congratulates
More Than 1,100 Graduates


The 53rd Commencement Exercises of Prince George's Community College were held on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD. More than 1,100 students received associate of arts, associate of science, associate of applied science and associate of arts in teaching degrees, as well as certificates and letters of recognition. Students representing the Honors Academy, Hillman Entrepreneurs, and other programs received more than $1 million in combined scholarships, grants, and aid. Honors Academy members were awarded full tuition Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarships to University of Maryland, College Park. Carlos Biaou and Satcha Robinson each received the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship worth $30,000 per year. Interim Secretary of Education of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Danette Howard, delivered the keynote address encouraging students to overcome all obstacles and stay focused on their goals and dreams. Reginald Dwayne Betts Appointed
to White House Council


President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint Prince George's Community College Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient Reginald Dwayne Betts to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. An independent body in the executive branch of the federal government, the council coordinates federal juvenile delinquency prevention programs and federal initiatives related to missing and exploited children. Betts, a former member of the Prince George's Community College Honors Academy and past president of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society, graduated from the college in 2007. Betts received a 2010 NAACP Image Award for his memoir, A Question of Freedom.

Health Sciences Division
Honors 150 Graduates


At pinning ceremonies across campus, the Health Sciences Division at Prince George's Community College celebrated the achievements of graduates in radiography, nursing, and respiratory therapy. The pinning ceremonies signify successful completion of all requirements, officially welcome graduates into the profession, and offer students an opportunity to celebrate their academic achievements with family and friends. Prince George's Community College offers an associate degree in 10 specialized accredited clinical programs approved by the state of Maryland. College Launches New Website

The college recently unveiled a brand new, easy-to-navigate pgcc.edu. The new website is the primary marketing tool for the college, and the design complements Prince George's Community College's current brand campaign, Transforming Lives. The home page provides easy access to all areas of the site with a large, clickable rotator featuring the latest news. In addition, the links on the left offer quick access to information based on the content a user is looking for or the audience with which they identify.

PGCC Named
Plus 50 Champion College


The American Association of Community Colleges has named Prince George's Community College a Plus 50 Champion College. Under the leadership of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, the college will assist with evaluating and supporting the 100 new Plus 50 Encore Completion colleges as they implement programs to help baby boomers retrain for new careers. Camille Crawford, senior SAGE coordinator, will participate in the Plus 50 Speakers Bureau designed to bring unique needs and strengths to college campuses by disseminating information to community colleges about working with baby boomer students.

Television Station Opens
Refurbished Facility


After undergoing an expansive upgrade, the Prince George's Community College Television Studio is a modern, high definition television environment where students can prepare for careers in television production and broadcasting. The new studio allows students to experience a real world production workflow, hone their skills in camera operation, learn advanced graphic and switching skills, and leave the college with experience using current industry techniques and equipment. The new Prince George's Community College television studio is one of the largest studio spaces in the Washington Metropolitan area with plenty of room to expand in the future to meet the evolving needs of students and the industry.

College Receives Ellucian Datatel Partners in Excellence Award


Prince George's Community College has been awarded the Ellucian Datatel Partners in Excellence Award for demonstrating exemplary collaboration and a commitment as an information technology leader among two-year colleges. The college was recognized for its leadership role in creating and managing a forum sharing best practices among colleges in Maryland that use Ellucian Datatel's Colleague software. As a recipient of the award, the college received a commemorative plaque and a $4,000 unrestricted gift to be used in support of the institution's Envision Success completion agenda.

PGCC Hosts
Technology and Engineering Forum


Private and government leaders tackled education challenges and created ways to foster business development at the Prince George's Community College Technology and Engineering Business Forum. To prepare today and tomorrow's workforce, participants debated the role of higher education and employment, shared training challenges faced in the region, and discussed the formation of a technology and engineering council in Prince George's County. The goal of the forum was to ensure the county's employers have access to well-educated and highly trained workers to meet current and future technology and engineering industry demands.  

DMSI Hosts Summer Institute


Diverse Male Student Initiatives hosted its Third Annual DMSI Summer Institute, Becoming Extraordinary. The program included several breakout sessions and team building exercises for DMSI participants promoting effective communication and entrepreneurship. The DMSI Summer Institute is an annual two-day experience where young men attend nine selected workshops facilitated by college employees and community leaders. Sessions covered topics including effective communication, leadership, and financial literacy. To learn more about DMSI, click here.
