Dear Colleague,
As Prince George's Community College continues to transform lives and Envision Success, we recognize the outstanding achievements of our students, faculty, and staff. The college is gearing up for the 53rd Commencement Exercises to be held on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center, in Upper Marlboro, MD. Interim Secretary of Education of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Danette Howard, will be the keynote speaker at this year's exercises. In addition, we are congratulating students for their amazing accomplishments including Carlos Biaou and Satcha Robinson who each received the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship, Tia Holmes who was named New Century Scholar and the top community college student in Maryland, and Noor Tagouri, the college's youngest graduate to deliver the commencement address.

Accolades

Yvette Snowden was named dean of Workforce Development and Community Partnerships. Snowden, an alumna of Prince George's Community College, began her career at the college in 2002 as a WDCE program coordinator and in 2005, was appointed director of community education. In 2011, she was named interim dean for Workforce Development and Continuing Education programs where she provided direction and oversight.
Priscilla Thompson was named library director. She joined the college in 1987 and served as a reference librarian until 1992 when she became the coordinator of public services. She acted as the department chair of library services from 2000 to 2011 and had been interim director since July 2011.
Andristine Robinson joined the Office of the President as the director of institutional initiatives. With more than 37 years of experience in college administration, Robinson has served as director of student services operations since 2002.

Eighteen Year-Old Graduate Delivers Student Address
|
|

Noor Tagouri will be the youngest graduate to deliver the student address at Prince George's Community College's 53rd Commencement Exercises. Tagouri has a 4.0 grade point average and will receive an associate of arts in general studies and a letter of recognition in events planning. She has been admitted to University of Maryland, College Park where she plans to study broadcast journalism, as well as international development and conflict management. Tagouri tested into the Honors Program at Prince George's Community College during her junior year in high school and began taking courses. She served as a writer for the Owl Student Newspaper, president of the Muslim Student Association, and events coordinator of the Public Speaking Club. Tagouri was selected after participating in a rigorous process where applicants were asked to submit an essay and resume and finalists performed a version of their speeches before a committee.

Honor Students Awarded Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships

Carlos Biaou and Satcha Robinson have each received the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship worth $30,000 per year. They are two of 60 community college students nationwide selected from more than 1,000 nominees. Biaou will transfer to University of Maryland, College Park to study electrical engineering and Robinson will attend American University and study international business. Biaou will receive an associate of science degree in electrical engineering, while Robinson will receive an associate of science degree in business administration. Both held a 3.9 grade point average and will participate in Prince George's Community College's 53rd Commencement Exercises. The Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship is intended to cover a significant portion of a student's educational expenses including tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.

Envisioning Success: Tia Holmes Named Top Student in Maryland and New Century Scholar
|
|
 Student Trustee Tia Holmes was named a New Century Scholar and the top community college student in Maryland by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and American Association of Community Colleges. New Century Scholars are the highest scoring students in each state and receive a $2,000 stipend, a New Century Scholar medallion, and recognition in USA Today. Holmes has a 4.0 grade point average, is a Dean's List student, and has completed 11 honors courses. In addition to her role as a member of the Prince George's Community College Board of Trustees, she served on the Publications Advisory Board and as interim editor-in-chief of The Owl student newspaper. Last summer, she was a legislative intern in the office of Congressman Steny H. Hoyer where she responded to constituent concerns. As the New Century Scholar, Holmes will give the keynote address at the 18th Annual All-Maryland Community College Academic Team Recognition Award banquet in Ellicott City, MD and represent Maryland at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention in April in Orlando, FL. |
PGCC Prepares for 53rd Commencement Excercises

The 53rd Commencement Exercises of Prince George's Community College will be held on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center, in Upper Marlboro, MD. More than 1,100 students will receive associate of arts, associate of science, associate of applied science and associate of arts in teaching degrees, as well as certificates and letters of recognition. Additionally, nearly 20 percent will transfer to four-year colleges and universities or enter the workplace in their respective fields. Interim Secretary of Education of the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Danette Howard, will be the keynote speaker at this year's commencement exercises. At 18 years old, Noor Tagouri will be the youngest graduate to ever deliver the student address.

Honors Convocation Celebrates Student Achievements
|
|
More than 150 students, representing four academic divisions, were saluted for induction into the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Citation in Honors, transfer scholarships, and departmental awards, at the Student Honors Convocation. In addition, more than 50 students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. After completing course work at Prince George's Community College, members of the Honors Academy and Class of 2012 will transfer to four-year colleges and universities on full and partial scholarships. Women's Summit Empowers Female Students

Prince George's Community College hosted the second annual Real Women of Prince George's Community College Women's Summit in April. Employees led workshops offering an outlet for participants to tackle various issues that impact female students and their success. The day-long seminar included engaging sessions centered on leadership, community service, healthy relationships, media images, and self-esteem. In addition, the first cohort of 120 women selected for the college's new Women of Wisdom program was introduced. DMSI Establishes Academic Intervention Component

The Red Tails Academic Intervention component of the Diverse Male Student Initiative focuses on young men with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or below. DMSI staff designed an exclusive curriculum covering a variety of topics including time management, learning styles, and test taking strategies to support the needs of this population and their attempts to excel academically. In addition, the DMSI team has implemented levels of accountability including professor evaluations, tutoring hours, mid-week meetings, and academic goal setting. DMSI currently serves 65 young men, with ten participating in Red Tails.

Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown Addresses Minority Businesses |

 Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown delivered the keynote address at the MBE Procurement and Business Development Conference: Opening Doors to New Opportunities at the Camelot by Martin's in Upper Marlboro, MD. Brown talked about efforts to support minority businesses in Maryland and the important role owners play in the economic viability of the state. Sponsored by the Center for Minority Business Development at Prince George's Community College, the event was designed to help increase the workforce through business opportunities and jobs. Prince George's Community College established the Center for Minority Business Development in 2009 to increase the number of minority business enterprises and strengthen their ability to compete in the county. |

Job Training Program Opens Doors for the Unemployed

TeamBuilders Academy at Prince George's Community College, a cohort-based accelerated adult career training program, celebrated student success at a completion ceremony this month. Three students from the spring class of 18 graduates received job offers prior to completing the program. TeamBuilders Academy supports a unique population in Prince George's County preparing them for construction-trade employment opportunities. Graduates completed 12-weeks of training focused on preparing them to obtain professional credentials and industry-specific certifications that align with local employment opportunities.

Employees Work to Improve the Freshman Experience

As part of the Envision Success completion agenda, faculty and staff are working on a pipeline project that will enable students to share the anxiety and challenges they face during their first six weeks on campus. As part of the project, students will conduct impromptu interviews and focus groups to gain insight from the student perspective. The team will evaluate the information and seek input from faculty and staff to address students' concerns. The final product will be a series of videos and multimedia presentations that facilitate discussions giving experienced employees the opportunity to share some of the complex problems students face and techniques to help them persist and complete.

Students Compete in Fourth Annual Math Tournament

 Mathematics students from 12 community colleges in the Washington metropolitan area competed for cash prizes and title of the area's top team at the Prince George's Community College Fourth Annual Mathematics Tournament. Students Carlos Biaou, Danielle Nogales, Sergio Arispe-Guzman, and Xianxing Wang represented the college at the competition. Exclusive to two-year colleges, the math competition focused on teamwork and provided a opportunity for students to showcase their unique talent. |
PGCC Welcomes Visitors to the Spring Music Festival

The Spring Music Festival 2012 welcomed visitors to the Largo Campus to enjoy the unique musical styles of local musicians. Traditionally known for its focus on Caribbean music, this year's festival highlighted several genres to reflect the popular artists in the county and surrounding areas. Performers included Grammy nominated singer and song writer Raheem DeVaughn, Eclipse Band, Be'la Dona and Black Alley. The festival also offered children's activities and an array of foods and crafts to complement the entertainment. The festival was free and open to the public.
