dukesIn this summer issue of the PGCC Owl Express, we are celebrating the achievements of our graduates as they transfer to area colleges and start work in their fields. In addition, we are welcoming the Academy of Health Sciences, empowering our female students, reaching out to members of the community, and launching a new mobile app. Congratulations to our outstanding staff and students as they continue to reach their educational and professional goals and assist the college in building strong community partnerships. Accolades

 

Kevin Wade, program director for Student Support Services/TRiO, was elected as the Student Support Services Program Representative for the Maryland Executive Council for Educational Opportunities (MECEO). Wade will serve on the executive board as the liaison between MECEO and all SSS/TRiO programs in the state of Maryland.

 

Carl Brown, executive director of the Center for Minority Business at Prince George's Community College, was named Business Educator of the Year by Comcast Spotlight and Morton Media.

 

Ricky Godbolt, program director of the Construction and Energy Institute, received an honorary initiation into Sigma Lambda Chi International Construction Honor Society. Membership is based on schol�arship, leadership and interest in the field of construction.

Lorna Redding, administrative specialist in the Communication and Theatre Department, graduated with the class of 2011. Redding has taken courses on and off to meet promotion criteria and for general knowledge.

Katrina Mayo, executive associate to the executive director of the Center for Minority Business Development, received a certificate in hospitality management services during commencement exercises. She will go on to receive her associate degree next May.

Prince George's County Public Schools Academy of Health Sciences Opens at PGCC  

 

On July 11, the college welcomed its first class of middle college students as they began the Summer Bridge Program. The Academy of Health Sciences will focus on preparing students to enter a college program in health sciences and offer required high school curriculum while giving students the opportunity to earn up to two years of college credits. The Academy is the only high school in the state of Maryland that will provide students the opportunity to receive an associate degree and high school diploma in four years.  

College Programs Receive Nearly $35,000 in Grants from the Foundation 

 

The Foundation awarded three Impact grants at its Legacy Circle Donor Appreciation Reception on June 16. TeamBuilders Academy Summer Young Adult Construction Training received $10,000 to establish a workforce supply link with Prince George's County Public Schools Vocational Education programs. Center for Minority Business Development was allocated $12,500 to host an Enterprise Program and Procurement Conference. Building Bridges: Transitions from Adult Education to Credit was given $12,400 to design a new website for English Second Language (ESL) students, create a multi-language brochure and implement a bridge class to improve vocabulary and listening skills. Over the past year, Prince George's Community College Foundation, Inc. has given more than $1 million to the college.  

PGCC Foundation Golf Tournament Supports Student Success 

 

The Prince George's Community College Foundation held its Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament in May. The event was held at the Lake Presidential Golf Club in Upper Marlboro, MD where participants enjoyed lunch on the course, a reception, and a banquet and awards ceremony. The Association recognized recipients of the Alumni Endowed Scholarship including Karen Do, a graduating nursing student who thanked tournament participants for supporting the scholarship and student success.

Academic Achievements


More than 1,000 students were awarded degrees and certificates at Prince George's Community College's 52nd Commencement Exercises held at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro. Graduates received special recognition for highest honors, academic achievements, leadership and community involvement. Many students transferring to four-year institutions were awarded scholarships, while others will enter the workplace. Graduates will transfer to area colleges and universities including American University, Howard University, Towson University, University of Baltimore, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Bowie State University, University of Maryland University College and University of Maryland, College Park.

Faculty Member Helps History Come Alive in the Classroom

 

This summer, Clover Baker-Brown gave her Introduction to Communication class an oral history assignment. She asked her students to interview an older family member and prepare an informative speech outlining their family history. While most students brought in pictures, Marie Datcher decided to invite four generations of her family to complement her speech. The women, with origins in South Carolina, represented four generations of strong women. Datcher created posters filled with colorful pictures as well as a huge quilt illustrating the generations.  

PGCC Ranked 22 of 25 Top African-American Associate Degree Producers 


For the second consecutive year, Prince George's Community College has been ranked among the top 25 African-American Associate Degree producers in the nation for 2010 by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. This year, PGCC was ranked 22nd in the country for African-American graduates based on 2009-2010 U.S. Department of Education data. In 2010, 522 African-American students graduated with associate degrees, representing a 14 percent increase from 2009. The college ranked among the top 100 overall for the total number of minority graduates.  

Prince George's Community College Launches Mobile App

Prince George's Community College's new mobile application powered by MOX gives students, employees, and members of the community easy access to important information about the college. Features include a directory of contact information for key offices, an interactive Google map and a news and events feed. Visit the App Store, BlackBerry App World, or Android Market to download MOX. Then, choose Prince George's Community College from the list of colleges and universities. The mobile app is constantly growing, so look for additional features and updates.
Women's Summit Empowers
Female Students


Employees and students attended The Real Women of Prince George's Community College's Women's Summit. The event included a series of inspiring discussions on a variety of hot topics from how men and women communicate to proper office etiquette and attire. Employees across campus moderated a series of insightful panels and workshops sharing personal stories and life lessons with female students.

 

College Hosts 2011 NTA/PGCC
Math Contest


With leadership and guidance from Christine Barrow, dean of Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Lester Clemons, secretary for the Washington, DC chapter of the National Technical Association Inc. (NTA), Prince George's Community College hosted the 2011 NTA/PGCC Math Contest at Largo Student Center. More than 100 students in grades 5-12 represented more than two dozen schools in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. The annual competition is designed to expose students in surrounding areas to the benefits of mathematics by encouraging them to increase their knowledge and pursue careers in science, computer science, mathematics, engineering, aviation and other technical fields.  

Night at the Baysox Brings
PGCC to the Community

 

For more than a decade, the college has hosted PGCC Night at the Baysox, a community outreach event held at Prince George's Stadium. College employees invite the community to cheer on the Bowie Baysox and share in an evening of fun, games, and giveaways. Thomas Knapp, vice president for administrative services, threw out the first pitch and the game was followed by a spectacular fireworks show.
