Johnika Dreher, retention advisor, received the Outstanding New Professional Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) standing committee for Multicultural Affairs for her service and professional contributions to ACPA and higher education. Dreher also was the recipient of the National Academic Advising Association Region 2 Conference Student Grant.
Dennis Huffman, program director at University Town Center, was honored by Maryland Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages with the Anne Beush Award for sustained, exemplary contributions to English as a second language education and international student services.

PGCC Hosts 52nd Annual Commencement
On Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m., Prince George's Community College will host its 52nd Annual Commencement Exercises at The Show Place Arena and Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro. Commencement recognizes the accomplishments of students who have completed Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Arts in Teaching degrees as well as certificates. More than 1,000 students have applied, many of whom will transfer to four-year colleges and universities or enter the workplace in their respective fields. Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, will be the keynote speaker.

Student Commencement Speaker Shares Story of Perseverance
Culinary arts honors student Cheron Hunt Ellison will present the student address at Prince George's Community College's 52nd Commencement Exercises. Ellison's achievements at PGCC include receiving a Gaylord STARS scholarship, earning dean's list honors, and graduating with a 3.65 grade point average. In addition, she volunteers with community kitchens for the poor and as a tutor at Thurgood Academy High School. Ellison will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Hospitality Management and a certificate in Culinary Arts. She will remain at the college and continue pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts.

Lt. Governor Brown Launches Veterans Job Portal
Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown hosted a news conference at the college to launch Mil2FedJobs, a veterans' federal job portal. The Maryland Workforce Exchange site is the first of its kind in directly matching transitioning military veterans and their skills to careers in the federal government. Lt. Governor Brown was accompanied by Maryland Labor Secretary Alexander M. Sanchez, Maryland Secretary of Veterans Affairs Ed Chow, PGCC student and Navy veteran Akiem Watley, and Vice President for Student Services Tyjaun Lee.

First Middle College in Maryland Opens at PGCC
Prince George's County Public Schools will open the Academy of Health Sciences, the first middle college high school in the state of Maryland at Prince George's Community College. The Academy will focus on preparing students to enter a college program in health sciences. Additionally, the new program will offer required high school curriculum while giving students the opportunity to earn up to two years of college credits. Students in the program will benefit by being exposed to college coursework early and being able to earn more college credits while still in high school. |

In May, University Town Center at Prince George's Community College culminated its 10th Anniversary Celebration, A World of Opportunity Within Your Reach: Prince George's Community College Celebrates 10 years. Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, members of the Prince George's County Senate and House delegations, Hyattsville Mayor Bill Gardiner, PGCC's Board of Trustees as well as representatives of the Foundation attended the dinner. |

First Cohort Graduates LMBE Accelerator Program
 The Center for Minority Business Development celebrated the graduation of its first cohort of seven companies from the LMBE Accelerator Program. The program provides minority-owned construction firms based in Prince George's County with the specialized training necessary to compete for large-scale construction contracts. While enrolled, participants undergo in-depth assessments of their human resource practices, financial and managerial profiles and technology. In addition, they have access to training in cost accounting, estimating, business development, marketing and leadership. |
Students Visit Capitol Hill
Prince George's Community College Pell Grant students, William Foggy and Jeffrey Marks, joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at a 2012 Department of Education budget request hearing in March at the Rayburn House Office Building. As Congress considers budget cuts to lower national debt, Foggy and Marks were shining examples of how federal education funding helps prepare students to enter a competitive national workforce. |
Academic Achievement Recognized at Student Honors Convocation
During Student Honors Convocation, the college celebrated the academic excellence and achievements of its most successful students. The best and brightest of Prince George's Community College, honorees excelled in spite of the odds and realized that learning begins in the classroom and continues through real-life experiences. More than 200 traditional and non-traditional students from four academic divisions, departments and collegian centers, the Honors Program and Honors Academy, Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta honors society were acknowledged. |
President Dukes Moderates STEM Panel
President Charlene M. Dukes moderated a panel addressing the disparities of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations on International Women's Day. Blastoff! Encouraging our Brightest Stars to Enter and Stay in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Fields was hosted by Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D) of Maryland at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. President Dukes opened the panel discussion, addressed challenges in encouraging young girls to enter STEM fields, and highlighted several projects and partnerships including the first Middle College in Maryland, articulation agreements with several Maryland universities, and CyberWatch. |
Hospitality and Tourism Institute Honors 2011 STEP-HI Graduates
The Hospitality and Tourism Institute (HTI) hosted its third reception recognizing spring 2011 Hospitality Express graduates. The event, funded by the STEP HI Grant, celebrated the scholarly achievements of students who completed 31 credits to qualify for the certificate programs in Hospitality Services Management. Additional partners included Next Step, the Philoxenia Hospitality Network, HTI Executive Advisory Board, and the Hospitality Tourism and Culinary Arts Department. |

Actor Charles Weldon Directs
Two Trains Running
Prince George's Community College's Communication and Theatre Department presented one of August Wilson's most noted accounts of African-American history, Two Trains Running directed by Wilson contemporary and noted actor Charles Weldon. Two Trains Running takes place in the 1960s, at the peak of the great racial conflict in Am erica. The central theme is the manner in which the poor urban black community reacted to legal victories of the civil rights movement, played out through regulars of a Pittsburgh diner who gather for mutual support. The play offers honest and intimate portraits of their experiences.

Thousands Attend Caribbean Festival
Prince George's Community College hosted Caribbean Festival 2011 in April. The free event welcomes thousands to the Largo campus every year and promotes family fun with music and activities. Global Network introduced live performances by renowned bands such as Tallpree, Oasis Island Sound, Image Band and DC Mambo. Additional entertainment and activities included a parade, stilt walkers, tattoo artists, and a unique selection of foods and crafts. |
