Welcome to PGCC Owl Express, a new monthly electronic forum on the latest happenings at Prince George's Community College. We are moving forward with a new vision, mission and strategic goals for 2011-2013, developed after an extensive environmental scan among our internal and external audiences. One of the most compelling lessons we learned is that we remain committed to serving community needs. When community needs arise, we respond quickly. Community College Financial Center Recognized with National Awards-- Bellwether Award for Innovation and League for Innovation in the Community College
June Lee Evans, program director of training and education, and Deborrah Banks, marketing director of the Center for Minority Business Development, were selected as two of 50 Women of Influence and Power by Minority Enterprise Advocate Magazine.

Grants Awarded FY 2011

Prince George's Community College has received more than $4 million in grants secured by employees from various departments at the college. The new funding sources will benefit initiatives in areas ranging from the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program to Adult Basic Education.

College Installs Four New Board Members
|
Prince George's Community College welcomed four new Board of Trustees members who were installed during the February board meeting--Oretha Bridgwaters, Aimee Olivo, Elizabeth G. Proctor and C. Michael Walls.

College Named National Center of Academic Excellence
Prince George's Community College has been named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Two-year Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security for academic years 2010 through 2015. The college's role as the leading institution for CyberWatch, a consortium of more than 50 higher education institutions, businesses, and government agencies focused on building and maintaining a stronger information assurance workforce, was a factor in the college qualifying to apply for this prestigious accreditation.

PGCC Joins National Movement to Improve Student Success
Signifying a strong commitment to student success and completion, Prince George's Community College is one of 30 community colleges nationwide selected for the Achieving the Dream 2011 Cohort. As part of the national group, PGCC will identify strategies to improve student success, close achievement gaps, and increase retention, persistence, and completion rates using assistance from experienced practitioners. Additionally, the college will build a culture of evidence campus-wide, using data to identify problems, set priorities, and measure progress toward increasing student success. Charting a Roadmap to Success
Prince George's Community College has been selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to participate in a new initiative, Developing a Community College Student Roadmap: From Entrance to Engagement in Educational Achievement and Success. The college will join 11 other institutions nationally to create robust and proactive programs of academic support tied to learning outcomes. PGCC programs involved in this initiative are the African, Latin, Asian, Native American (ALANA) Experience and Faculty Mentoring Program. Partnering to Help Students
Prince George's Community College and the University of Maryland Baltimore County have signed the Transfer Student Alliance and Honors College memoranda of understanding. President Dukes and Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, joined other college officials and PGCC's Honors Academy students during a signing ceremony in Marlboro Gallery at the community college in March. Center for Health Studies Addresses Critical Health Care Needs
Prince George's Community College is constructing a $24 million Center for Health Studies, a 100,000 square foot state-of-t he-art facility that allows the college to expand and enhance existing clinical health programs and develop new programs to address workforce shortages in health sciences fields. The college will offer education and training programs for five of the top 10 high-demand health care occupations in Maryland and the surrounding region, including registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, pharmacy technician, radiology technologist, medical records and health information technicians. The center is expected to open fall 2012. |
Supporting the Needs of Student Veterans
President Dukes joined other college and university presidents in the state to sign the Maryland Campus Compact for Student Veterans, a memorandum of understanding between the state of Maryland and higher education institutions to ensure educational success of veterans through recruitment, transition, retention and graduation efforts. The agreement outlines specific services that colleges and universities will offer veterans, including awareness, coordination, open door system, behavioral health, financial aid, GI Bill support and peer support. New Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals 2011-2013 Emphasize Transformation
Prince George's Community College worked with more than 100 internal and external stakeholders to develop a new vision, mission and strategic goals for 2011-2013. The newly created vision and mission statements coupled with the 2011-2013 Strategic Plan provides the foundation and the framework for Prince George's Community College to engage students and partners in innovative learning experiences and educational opportunities that respond to the needs of the community and the region.
