We've been dealing with heat in the last few weeks. As we all work toward staying on track and cool, the NEO Chapter of AHMA has been bustling. We had a stellar program in May with Belinda Gore, PhD that brought more than 65 attendees! The retreat at Hines Hill Conference Center in Peninsula was attended by 30 and proved to be informative and transformative!
Read on about an exciting new addition to the AHMA website for members called the Forum. On another note, our Board said goodbye to Dr. Liz Cavin and Dr. Lili Lustig who both have moved on to new and growthful opportunities. There are several new holistic centers in northeast Ohio to share with you. And, we had a program that will be sure to stimulate discussion with Dr. Alcorn this month!
Read on, stay connected!

Event Recap - "Compassionate Depossession"
| |
Is There Tangible Evidence of Spirit Attachment as a Cause for Illness?
 | |
Dr. Robert Alcorn. Psychiatrist and Shamanic Practitioner
|
On July 26, 2012, Dr. Robert Alcorn spoke to over 37 people at the presentation "Compassionate Depossession" to lend his tangible support. Dr. Alcorn, a holistic psychiatrist and shamanic practitioner, is the Medical Director of Alternative Paths, Inc. in Medina and has a private practice in Beachwood.
Dr. Alcorn graduated from Yale College and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and was trained in shamanic studies under Rosalyn Bruyere, soul retrieval under Sandra Ingerman, MA and depossession with Betsy Bergstrom. He worked with Jack Stucki who worked with a "luminator" a subtle energy device that uses Polaroid technology to visualize spirits. In the shamanic perspective, illness is caused by a disturbance of the soul, and in some cases a negative spirit that attaches to the soul. Dr. Alcorn demonstrated through the use of the luminator, how he diagnosed and intervened with spirits who possessed Lynn, a patient he treated for bipolar disorder, substance abuse and suicidal tendencies.
The talk was quite interesting, learning the motives of spirits to protect and in some cases inhibit the development of the patient. Dr. Alcorn artfully reviews how he used the art of persuasion to convince the spirits to move into the next world...and I found the presentation informative, thought-provoking and convincing! I am more convinced about the compassion of this type of practice.

AHMA NEO Board member Francoise Adan, MD was featured in the Plain Dealer's article which focuses on the integration of alternative therapies into patient care at University Hospitals.
"University Hospitals is one of a growing group of hospitals around the country that are integrating such therapies into patient care. Many of the UH patients availing themselves of such alternative treatments are trying them because they have been recommended by their doctors..."

| Summary of Belinda Gore's June Weekend Retreat | |
A Participant's Perspective of the Retreat
By Natalie Talis
Marketing Manager, AHMA
I was lucky enough to attend Belinda Gore's weekend June retreat, "Ecstatic States for Mind-Body Healing and Greater Consciousness." I had never spent time reading or thinking about trances and frankly, had very few expectations. I arrived Saturday morning to a beautiful park and a renovated barn armed with only a yoga mat and journal.
The day started with an introduction to the Cuyamungue Institute and the methods behind ritual body postures. Participants ranged in age from early 20s to mid 70s with various levels of experience in "ecstatic states." After preparing the mind with breathwork and clearing the space, we embarked on a 15-minute trance, guided only by the sound of a traditional rattle. While 15 minutes doesn't sound like much, the simple poses elicited physiological changes too strong to be disputed.
After the session, we broke up into groups to discuss our experiences. While some had drastically different experiences, what shocked me the most were the similarities. Seeing the same color patterns, feeling the same warm flush as our blood pressures shifted, sensing the same wealth of energy produced by a room full of people all open to the experience.
I left the retreat feeling physically and mentally exhausted, yet peaceful. My subconscious was speaking to me and I listened; although it took a few days to register its meaning. Seeing the mind-body connection in action really affirmed the work I do for the AHMA. I've read articles and studies about how the brain can affect how we heal and function, but tapping into that capacity first-hand was much more poignant. Realistically, I'm unlikely to do this practice on my own, as it seems more powerful in a group setting. But I guarantee that I will be the first one to sign up the next time I see this opportunity.

| To Inform and Transform | |
Summary from Dr. Belinda Gore's "Reclaiming the Human Capacity for Ecstasy
 | |
Belinda Gore, PhD
|
On May 3, AHMA NEO hosted psychologist, Belinda Gore, Ph.D. who presented a fascinating talk and historical photographs of the ancient tradition of body postures based on the work of Dr. Felicitas D. Goodman. Over 65 attended the event in which Dr. Gore presented photos of ancient carvings depicting human figures in postures. What was fascinating was that these postures were common across different cultures as far as 36,000 years ago. In her work through the Cuyamungue Institute, Dr. Goodman experimented with folks practicing the postures and was able to elicit common responses of ecstatic spiritual consciousness. Through this work, Dr. Goodman founded the Cuyamungue Institute of which Dr. Gore was former president and now Director of Training and advisor to the Board of Trustees.
It was fascinating to consider how important it is for the human to experience ecstacy. We can certainly see the desire of many to experience ecstacy through the use of addictive behaviors, what Dr. Gore described as a condition resulting from "ecstacy deprivation." The presentation was both interesting and thought provoking.

| Paleo vs. Vegan |
Both Paleo and vegan diets have become popular in the last few years. But what are their pros and cons, and how might they affect your health?
ExperienceLife.com assembled a roundtable of experts to make sense of the debate. All nine of these practitioners have written at least one book on diet and nutrition, so it is an astute group answering these questions.
