Winter, 2012
From the desk of Doug Moore, PhD, Chapter President

AHMA of Northeast Ohio is reorganizing! Our intention is for NE Ohio to be a national leader in integrated and holistic healthcare.

This new initiative expands AHMA services beyond just educational opportunities. We want to unite holistic health care practitioners in the region and support their personal and professional growth. These changes are all captured in a slogan for AHMA: To Inform, To Connect, To Transform

Our vision is to create on the AHMA website a Holistic Town Hall where members can post upcoming classes, groups, presentations, recent publications and the like. You will receive a summary of these postings in a weekly email.

In addition, we plan to develop Holistic Connections, a place on the website where members can meet up with other members either virtually or in person to discuss common interests. For example, if AHMA members want to gather and discuss integrated care for someone with an eating disorder or depression, Holistic Connections will facilitate that linkage. If there is interest in meeting to discuss cross referrals or other practice building strategies, AHMA is here to facilitate that. The possibilities are unlimited and very exciting.

We also want to support experiences that are transformative in nature through retreats and other venues that facilitate balance, rejuvenation, and well-being. AHMA can help you either facilitate or attend such retreats. Holistic practitioners believe in walking the talk-AHMA can help deepen that commitment.

The AHMA board of NE Ohio is working to make the region a model that other communities will emulate in not only integrating health care, but also integrating the practitioners who provide the services. The board is looking forward to hearing about your ideas, interests, and availability to participate. Thank you so much for helping to make AHMA the organization you can call your Holistic Home!!

Important reminder - complete our survey!

You have an opportunity to help Northeast Ohio be a national leader in integrated and holistic healthcare!

This is a call to create a new era for AHMA and you are invited to guide and support this call to excellence as the NE Ohio Chapter moves forward in the collective goal to:

                           Connect              Inform             Transform

If you haven't already, join us in this initiative by answering the questions in the linked survey.  Your energy, ideas and wisdom are not only welcome, but necessary for AHMA to be a vibrant organization responsive to your needs.

  Thank you for your participation!

Introducing the Institute of Noetic Sciences

IONSlogoAHMA NEO is joining with the Cleveland Chapter of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) to present Reclaiming the Human Capacity for Ecstasy on March 29, 2012. As an introduction, we'd like to provide a short description of IONS.

The Institute of Noetic Sciences, founded in 1973 by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, is a nonprofit research, education, and membership organization whose mission is supporting individual and collective transformation through consciousness research, educational outreach, and engaging a global learning community in the realization of our human potential.  Read more

"Reclaiming the Human Capacity for Ecstasy" led byIONSGore Belinda Gore, Ph.D

The human need for ecstasy is as imperative as the need for food. For thousands of years, humans incorporated this capacity for expanded states of awareness into their religious rituals but those practices were nearly lost. Anthropologist Felicitas Goodman's research revived a tradition - at least 36,000 years old - that uses the natural capacity of the human nervous system to alter its functioning in order to enter the state of ecstatic spiritual consciousness. The importance of self-care in preventing disease by Liz Cavin, ND

lizcavinWhile I contemplate 2012 and the numerous possibilities it brings to our lives, I think about self-care health care and the key role it plays in preventing disease. In his book Optimal Wellness Dr. Ralph Golan MD succinctly explains the importance of self care. He states, "....optimal wellness is integrally linked to the call to self-care. It's critically important to learn what you can about all the health factors you are able to influence: your diet, exercise, stress level, relationships, self esteem, feelings, goals and so on.....It is the call to understand your weaknesses and strengths... Your Health is in your hands."  Read more

More doctors going the alternative medicine route

Even in their own lives, physicians look beyond Western medicine

Reprinted from Chicago Tribune - Dec. 14, 2011

tribarticlephotoAfter a stressful day of seeing sick and sometimes dying patients, Dr. Aaron Michelfelder doesn't reach for a beer to decompress. Instead, this family medicine doctor at Loyola University Medical Center opts for acupuncture or self-hypnosis. While doctors are schooled in traditional Western medicine, a growing number like Michelfelder are turning to complementary and alternative medicine to stay healthy, then integrating the techniques into their medical practices. Michelfelder is board-certified in family medicine, acupuncture and medical hypnosis.

Alternative therapy also includes herb therapy, deep breathing, massage and yoga. Full story
