I graduated from medical school in in 1985 and started my family medicine practice in 1988. I started my practice with a strong mindset that medical science is the ultimate science and the rest is quackery. I was enjoying my practice in a very busy clinic where I saw about 80 - 90 patients every day. Gradually I started enjoying fame and respect and became an important doctor for the pharmaceutical companies. After about five years of practice, I started realizing that a lot of medical problems cannot be cured, but I kept on assuring patients that they would be all right. The sight of my patients with their chronic diseases made me feel embarrassed and the level of guilt started rising.

This will be my last column to you as President of the AHMA. I feel the sadness of the completion of an incredibly rewarding journey, but I feel joyous at knowing the AHMA is in tremendously capable hands, and I am confident about where the next steps will lead. To that end, I want to take this last column to introduce you to my dear friend, Molly.

AHMA Says Good-Bye to Dr. Lee Lipsenthal

A Dear Friend Passes On
Dr. Lee Lipsenthal, Internist, author, Medical Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute and great friend and supporter of the AHMA died on Sept. 20. Lee was to have led AHMA's upcoming retreat "The Healer Within," but his declining health intervened. Lee had asked his close friends President-Elect Molly Roberts and her husband Bruce Roberts to lead the retreat in his place. Though there will not be a funeral, planning for a memorial service is underway. AHMA will provide details when they are available.
The staff and members of AHMA extend heartfelt condolences to Lee's family and friends.
"Our dear friend, Lee Lipsenthal, will be well missed. Lee was such a gift to all of us. Our hearts go out to Kathy, Cheryl and Will and all the rest of those who feel his absence most acutely. May he find the joy, love and peace on the other side that he gave to so many here on this side of the divide." President-Elect, Molly Roberts, M.D.

| Scholarships Provide Membership to Med Students | |
 A long-time member and AHMA Past-President, Bill Manahan, M.D. has made it possible for medical students to gain exposure and connection to holistic/integrative medicine through membership in the AHMA. Bill funded scholarships enabling (number) medical students to join AHMA and remain as members throughout their schooling.
