A new direction for iMOSAIC
| |
Executive Director's Report
|
Members of the Integrative Medicine Consortium voted in June to wait until 2013 to hold the next joint medical conference, iMosaic, even after the success of the inaugural event this past April. (iMosaic is Integrative Medicine Offering Science-based Alternatives In Collaboration.)
AHMA is one of nine member organizations comprising the IMC membership and one of four IMC member-organizations to have done the work to put on iMosaic in Minneapolis. The joint decision to go on hiatus for a year results in a shift in AHMA's strategic direction. It will require a refocusing of energy and priorities.

Serving Others by Serving Ourselves

Helping holistic practitioners heal: a core mission of the AHMA
by David Forbes, MD, AHMA President
Bring the gift of your presence to help kick off our new direction of AHMA Healing Retreats! As we have been discussing over these past months, we view the core foundational aspect of holistic health practice to be our own work on self-healing. Our ability to effectively serve our fellow human beings inevitably emanates from knowing the territory within ourselves. Thus, we see the AHMA's core mission as...

| Self Induced Healing and Remarkable Recoveries | What can we learn from spontaneous healing?
by Bernie Siegel, MD
The reason that medicine has not explored the issue of self-healing and patients who exceed survival expectations is that we either give the treatment the credit, or refer to them as miracles or spontaneous remissions. Medicine does not study success because one cannot learn from spontaneous events, but when one thinks of these cases as unique to the patient and self-induced, you are more likely to ask the patient for their story and learn about survival behavior. Earth Centered Medicine
| Step One: Being Grounded and Embodied
by Tom Weaver, MD
Member ReflectionsLike any journey, the journey of recovery begins with this single step. In a nutshell: "I can't do it alone" I need to find a power greater than myself, God as I understand the Creator, the group, something bigger than my own EGO, to create Good Orderly Direction in my life. An attitude of gratitude for my being present to my loved ones, my Creator, and taking good care of my body and self, is what I reflect on today. When I called the AHMA recently, staff member Terri Di Paola mentioned she took a bike ride along a trail from Cleveland to Akron, OH. Akron is the birthplace of the 12-step program where, in June, 1935, Dr. Bob and Bill W. met to support each other in their recovery. So, when I planned a Fathers Day journey to Read More...

The Birth of Holistic Medicine & The AHMA

Father of holistic medicine
Evarts Greene Loomis, MD
Today, holistic/integrative medicine is gaining momentum and interest both from the public and within the healthcare community, thanks, in part, to a visionary doctor, Evarts Greene Loomis, MD (1910-2003) widely regarded as the father of holistic medicine. Loomis was an internationally known homeopathic physician, surgeon, author and lecturer.
Preferring to be called Evarts rather than "doctor," he was inspired to conceptualize holistic medicine while a young doctor working for the Grenfell Mission (traveling by dog sled and boat when necessary) which served the fisherman families of Newfoundland and Labrador. "It was out of the ethers, or perhaps from God, that the words 'Treat the whole man...
