Did You Know?

Before the Inwood campus was built, Natalie and Sandy traveled around Scandinavia for inspiration. When they returned, well-known Texas architect O'Neill Ford gracefully combined Nordic and Texas Southwestern designs to create our unique campus.

Greetings!
Welcome to our New York issue. Many Lamplighter Alumni have followed their dreams to the Big Apple and have indeed found them! We cannot wait to share the stories of three Lamplighters who found excitement and fulfillment, crediting Lamplighter for much of their success. We are featuring three alumni from this great city. Please meet Alexis Clark, James Macari, and Jane Harrison Fox as they share memories and photos of their journeys after Lamplighter.

Alexis Clark Senior Editor, Town and Country Magazine
Class of 1986

Alexis is currently a senior editor for the parties and weddings sections of Town & Country magazine in New York City. She attends some of the most exciting social and philanthropic festivities in Manhattan, including opening night galas for the New York City Ballet, Carnegie Hall, the Philharmonic and Lincoln Center. She also attends museum balls at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. What a dream job!
After graduating from Greenhill School, Alexis attended Spelman College in Atlanta. After working as an assistant buyer for Neiman Marcus, she enrolled in the University of Virginia, earned a master's degree, and was subsequently accepted to the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. Shortly after graduation, she accepted a job at Town & Country magazine as an editorial assistant. She has now been with the magazine for nine years.
Alexis' years at Lamplighter had a profound impact upon her life. She remembers that learning was always fun and that she was encouraged to be curious and to try new things. She fondly recalls exploring the greenhouse, raising chickens, learning parliamentary procedure, playing the ukulele, and reciting Shakespeare before an audience.Though Alexis attended numerous prominent schools, Lamplighter is her very favorite by far.

James Macari Fashion Photographer
Class of 1986
After graduation from The lamplighter School, The Episcopal School of Dallas, and Oklahoma University, Jim Macari received an airline ticket to New York City. Although he only wanted a one way ticket, his parents insisted that he accept a return flight, just in case. He never used that ticket, because within a month he had found a job with the well known photographer Richard Avedon. After two years, he moved on to become first assistant to Patrick Demarchelier, and six years later, he started his own business.
Jim owes his successes in life to his parents, who have always believed in him, and to Lamplighter. "I believe that my enthusiasm and desire to succeed began at Lamplighter, because there was the encouragement to explore and create without boundaries, or without having a right or wrong way to arrive at a destination, an answer, a new design."
"Our teacher was simply amazing. We experimented with so many types of materials and techniques that each day was a dream. I could not wait to get to class. What was surprising was that this was actually school, and it was fun - hard fun at times, but fun nevertheless. I continue to have fun with my art every single day."

Jane Harrison Fox Wardrobe Stylist, Rachael Ray
Class of 1967
Jane Harrison Fox holds the exciting position of fashion stylist for television personality Rachael Ray whom she met on a photo shoot in 2005. Jane comments that Rachael keeps her extremely busy with her television schedule, personal appearances, book tours, and photo shoots. Jane credits her exposure to fascinating tasks and constant stimulation while at Lamplighter for her current ability to multi task and keep up with such a fast-paced schedule.
After graduating from Lamplighter, Jane attended Franklin Middle School, Greenhill, and Hillcrest High School. She began her college career at Northwestern University and later transferred to the University of Texas, where she earned a degree in fine arts specializing in photography. Jane followed her dreams to New York City in 1988, working as a celebrity stylist touring with the New Kids on the Block, Brittany Spears and Janet Jackson. She styled the dancers for the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl, though she noted that she herself had nothing to do with Janet Jackson's costume. Jane has many favorite Lamplighter memories including square dancing with the children from the Callier School for the hearing impaired. She fondly remembers the founders, Mrs. Murray and Miss Swain, the peacocks and ponies, Ike the lizard, the Easter Parade, the ukulele, and the ropes used for swinging in the barn. Jane states that Lamplighter gave her that "I am special" edge to her life, and it has stuck throughout the years.
