SAFETY This Season
The holidays sparkle with brilliant lights and lovingly prepared meals, but these delights also represent some potential perils for your pet. Here are just a few reminders to help keep your furry friend safe at your home or at your host's residence.
- Sage and other herbs can disturb a dog or cat's gastrointestinal system when digested in small amounts, and may affect the central nervous system if too much is consumed. A scrumptious dog snack may be better than table scraps.
- Be aware of potentially poisonous holiday plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, amaryllis, paper whites, and the fir oil in certain Christmas trees.
- Decorations can create dangers for pets - cords, lights, tinsel, ornaments, and even ribbon that can be swallowed. Anchor trees solidly and be careful about the placement of cords.
- Pack a bag for your pet if it visits another household this season, filled with favorite treats, blanket, grooming needs, and your pet's health records. Take a picture of your pet with your cell phone's camera before leaving or bring a recent photo from home.
- Introduce your pet slowly, usually on a leash, to pets in your host's home. Bring treats for those pets, too.

THE LUXE PET LIFE
at Hotels
The well-heeled dog or cat can now enjoy five-star treatment at the toniest hotels in North America. Pets escape their traditional routines here as much as their owners, indulging in a grand getaway complete with gourmet meals and adventure camps. Travel and Leisure magazine recently reported that the finest hotels offer many privileges for today's furry guests, including their very own monogrammed robes, pet treadmills, and four-course meals served on bone china.
According to the magazine, "Vermont's Spa at Topnotch, for example, has doggy Reiki. Hotels are competing for Fido's attention with food. The Mandarin Miami offers grilled beef tenderloin, while Los Cabos' Las Ventanas al Paraiso features made-to-order dishes for pets..."
Pets may be greeted like any regular guest - by name - while enjoying a slate of activities designed just for them, including voice-coaching and recording sessions, canine surfing and other camps, and their own workout with a certified trainer.
If you're planning that luxurious retreat, ask about packages for pets. These days that hotel visit might include wrought iron beds for pups, pet-sized cabanas on the beach or at the pool, or a side-by-side massage with their owner. It's a vacation that's certain to please every member of the family! |

HITTING THE ROAD
WITH LESS STRESS
Travel during the holidays can create many concerns for pet owners, but with a little preparation, much can be done to ease the stress on pets that are part of your distant celebrations.
For those journeying by car this season, get in a few test runs before taking the trip with your pet. Not only will it help condition the pet to longer car travel, it will also help you understand if there are any motion sickness issues that require discussion with your veterinarian. Be sure to select a carrier that is large enough for the animal to rest, stand up and turn around. There are also seat belts and harnesses that can be assembled for use with larger pets, as well as modified car seats with padded areas, sometimes described as "pooch seats" for smaller dogs. A new treat or toy and fresh air streaming into the car can make the trip more relaxing for your pet.
When jetting, it's recommended that you make arrangements as well in advance as possible, given the volume of travelers and the specific regulations of airlines. Acclimating your pet to its carrier a week prior to travel will help reduce anxiety. Finally, be sure to maintain tags on your pets that are easily read if you are on the road, and once you reach your destination, or ensure that you have a microchip implanted as a means of identification. |

REUNITED! Bugsy crossed the Atlantic to be with his family in a recent move from Canada to the United Arab Emirates. Here's what his owner told us: "I was very impressed with the service from WorldCare Pet and the affiliates in both Dubai and Toronto. As we moved our bulldog, I was very concerned about the heat in the summer in Dubai and was impressed by the concern that WorldCare Pet displayed as well. Although I had to hold off on Bugsy's move for a couple of months, he arrived safely in Canada and this was the most important thing to me. The people at WorldCare were polite and helpful and I was really happy that I was kept informed of Bugsy's movement throughout this long trip. The people in Dubai were also great at assessing Bugsy's needs and determining the best time for him to travel and informing me of the risks involved. The people who delivered him to my house were extremely friendly and you could tell they loved animals as well which was really great for Bugsy. Thanks to the whole team for getting my best friend home to me!" G.W. Toronto to Dubai |
