Improved Lighting and Energy Saving
Providing adequate lighting for indoor tennis courts can be challenging. Just ask Fun Zone Tennis Courts in Woodbury, Minnesota. The public tennis facility is open 13 hours a day, seven days a week which means the lights are on an average of 4,716 hours a year.
Fun Zone's existing lighting system consisted of (40) 1,000W metal halide fixtures which caused the facility to use around 203,700 kWh a year.
To save energy and cut costs while providing adequate light levels Fun Zone decided to call Premier Lighting, to discuss retrofit options and find a solution.
Premier Lighting recommended installing (40) Precision-Paragon [P2] HBD 9 lamp T5HO fixtures, that provided improved lighting levels while only using 530W per fixture. The T5HO fixtures use a total of 99,979 kWh a year, reducing Fun Zone's lighting energy use by over 50%, and saving about $8,000 every year.
The new lights provided greater light levels on important areas of the court. The T5HO fixtures provide 46 footcandles (FC) in the center and 35 FC at the courts' perimeters, versus the metal halide fixtures which provided 45 FC in the center and 29 FC at the perimeters.
Along with improved lighting and bigger savings, Fun Zone has another reason to celebrate; the rebate. The lighting retrofit project qualified for a rebate from Xcel, which meant that they only had to pay about half of the total project cost. And, with the energy savings from the new T5 fluorescent highbay system, the payback will be less than a year and a half.
"The project turned out really well - the lighting's better, the energy savings are greater and the tennis players are happier," were comments from the staff at Fun Zone. The Fun Zone couldn't be more pleased with the results.
