LED Walk-In Freezer Fixture | | |
CSM Bakery converts 400 Watt Metal Halides to LED's.
CSM Bakery Products had converted all of their HID fixtures in their facility to fluorescent fixtures several years ago with the exception of a walk-in freezer they use to store product. Due to the temperature of the facility it was determined that the fluorescent high bay fixtures wouldn't hold up as good as the HID fixtures had for them so they left them alone for the last several years. The freezer had 32, 400 watt Metal Halide fixtures that operated 24/7 (but was actually in use less than 20% of the time). This cost CSM over $10,000/year in energy costs for the lighting portion alone. Also, since it is a freezer application there are significant costs associated with off-setting the heat that the HID fixture produced to keep the freezer temperature intact. With that in mind there was a significant opportunity for CSM to save money assuming the right light fixture was available.
That's where Premier Lighting stepped in and partnered with P2 to offer an energy efficient LED freezer hi bay fixture with an attached occupancy sensor. LED's operate better the colder it is so the negative temperature of the freezer actually improved the performance of the LED fixture (longer life/better light output). In addition the LED engine in the fixture re-strikes instantly allowing for control by an occupancy sensor. HID fixtures have a long re-strike time so that wasn't a possibility before which is why the HID fixtures were on 24/7 when the space was used infrequently. The new LED freezer fixture uses 150 watts of energy and provides equivalent light output:

The savings from converting the 400 watt metal halide to the 150 watt LED is around $7,000/year. That is assuming the new fixtures will operate 24/7. Since they are on an occupancy sensor in an area that operates infrequently the savings is even greater - $2,000 plus more per year. So, by doing this lighting retrofit CSM went from a lighting system that cost them $10,000/year to operate to a lighting system with equal light ouput that costs them about $1,000/year to operate. These savings don't even factor in the BTU reduction they are getting so overall the payback on this project was excellent (less than 2 years)!
