Wakota Civic Arena retrofits two ice rinks and locker rooms that improves light quality and save energy

Premier Lighting recently worked with the City of South Saint Paul at Wakota Civic Arena to update the lighting for both ice rinks, the locker rooms, the offices and the main entrance.  The retrofit project resulted in a 40% improvement in light quality, a 43% reduction in energy usage, (over $11,000 in annual energy savings), and a rebate of approximately $15,000 which equated to a payback of 3-1/2 years.

The two ice rinks had different existing light fixtures and the retrofit project provided an opportunity to install the same type and style light fixtures in both rinks which simplified the inventory of lighting items need to be stocked.

Rink 1, had forty (40) 400 watt Metal Halide Fixtures with a single light level. The new six (6) Lamp, T5 High Bay Fixtures were set up using multi-level lighting control providing for additional energy savings and light level control based on rink activities, with the option of having either 2 of the 6 lamps on, or 4 of the 6 lamps on, or all 6 lamps on, controlled from the Mangers Office.

Rink 2, had twenty-four (24) 1000 watt Metal Halide Fixtures with a single light level and more inconsistency of light levels on the rink due to the spacing on the 1000 watt Metal Halide Fixtures.  The retrofit project installed (40) 6 Lamp T5 High Bay Fixtures which improved overall light quality at ice level. The same multi-level lighting control that was installed on Rink 1 was also installed on Rink 2, with the option of having either; 2, 4 or 6 lamps on and controlled from the Mangers Office.

The locker rooms, offices and front entry areas were all retrofitted from 8' T12's lamps to 4' T8 lamps, 5000K. In the locker rooms the wall switches were removed and ceiling mount motion sensors were installed to improve the energy savings when the locker rooms are unoccupied.
