Fibromyalgia and Alternative Therapy

Andrzej
Andrzej Strzalkowski, RPT

An interesting coincidence...

A recent article by Dr. Paul Donohue in the Sarasota Herald Tribune pointed out that though there is no lab test for fibromyalgia, in fact the feature unique to diagnosis is "tender points". "...points on the body where the examining finger of the doctor elicits pain far out of proportion to the pressure the doctor applies." Sound familiar? Has Andrzej ever made you "jump" by applying pressure to a specific spot on your body?

Though careful to label them "tender points" rather than pressure points these "tender points" (all 18 of them!) are found on the body's meridian lines (the energy circulation system, similar to the blood circulation system) that are manipulated in alternative therapy; for a variety of beneficial results including improved circulation, relief from swelling and pain. This is the physical aspect of Alternative Therapy.

Theories as to the Cause of Fibromyalgia

Medical research has yet to pinpoint a clear cause of Fibromyalgia. Some doctors believe a hormonal or chemical imbalance disrupts the way nerves signal pain. Other doctors suggest a traumatic event or chronic stress may increase the susceptibility to Fibromyalgia. Most traditional experts agree fibromyalgia results from a combination of factors, rather than a single cause.*

Consider this...

The meditation and relaxation exercises taught by the practitioners of alternative therapy are effective in stress reduction/elimination whether the stress is from everyday living, a chronic condition or past traumatic experiences. The osteopathic practice of treating the entire body, by seeking release through pressure points, gentle manipulation, cranial sacral release together with Andrzej's relaxation training and emotional support provide an environment for healing regardless of the malady.

Yoga for the Soul
The "Yoga" Experience

Today, with so many choices in Yoga, it can be mind boggling where to begin your practice.  From "Naked" yoga in Brooklyn to "Yoga.com" on the Internet, many may feel overwhelmed or under educated and unable to choose.
 Bound Ankle Pose
Relax!  Select the best yoga for your physical ability, personality and goals.  Here are three of my personal picks:

Hatha Yoga - The best place for beginners to yoga; gentle, alignment based asanas (poses).  A certified teacher can give you variations of each pose to match your level of skill for each asana.

Berkram Yoga - 26 postures, Hatha style asanas, practiced in a studio heated to 105 degrees.  Beneficial for cleansing the body of impurities.

Vinyasa Yoga - Often called flow or "power" yoga; a quick moving, flow style practice that incorporates specific breath patterns.  Good cardio workout.

There are innumerable variations of the ancient practice of yoga.  Talk to people who practice, seek recommendations and choose a studio that is convenient in both class times and location.

Above all, practice with a certified yoga teacher who will assist in keeping you injury free!  Get curious, keep an open mind, find a class you enjoy and begin the journey!
