Alternative Physical Therapy
Isn't just for back pain anymore! (Part 1)
Distinction Between Traditional Physical Therapy and Alternative Therapy
Physical therapy is traditionally defined as the treatment of injuries and physical conditions by a trained therapist. The therapist concentrates solely on the affected muscle, bone or joint.

Alternative Therapy bases its treatment on relaxation. These relaxation techniques reduce stress and tensions which cause imbalance to our physical structure (bones, joints, etc.) as well as negatively affecting our internal organs and emotional wellbeing.
How Alternative Therapy Stimulates the Body's "Self-Healing"
In day to day life, we experience a multitude of tensions which ravage our bodies. Our bodies are a dynamic structure. Our organs, joints and muscles are in constant motion when you are walking, when you get up, even when you are sitting or sleeping there is movement. Because of this constant motion, it is imperative our body's systems remain balanced towards each other. It is when these balances are compromised that dysfunction occurs.
For example, if we are not relaxed and there are certain muscles that are just slightly tight, it can throw off our gait (way of walking). This, in turn, can produce tension in the pelvis, throwing off the balance of the lumbar spine. The paraspinal muscles then react to protect the somatic (muscular control) nerves. The muscles that protect the somatic nerves push the spine slightly forward making the spine put pressure on the autonomic nervous system, which unconsciously controls the blood supply to the organs and somatic nerves. The balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic (two opposite parts of autonomic nervous system) is disrupted and irritation of the organ occurs. This makes the organ either overwork or not work enough. When this happens, it can, for example, inhibit the proper function of the digestive system causing diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcers, just to mention a few.
The relaxation techniques taught at Alternative Physical Therapy re-balances the autonomic nervous system which produces a calming effect on the irritated structures.
In any dysfunction where the body compensates on this level, where an organ is affected, our treatment improves the ability of the organ to function, allowing the body to "heal itself." Through visceral manipulation, myofascial manipulation and cranial sacral manipulation the body can be "re-balanced".
Additionally, the patient is "trained" to clear the patterns producing the tensions through specially designed meditative exercises.
Think outside the "waiting room" box and consider Alternative Therapy for many additional health needs in addition to injury rehabilitation and bone and joint disorders. Call 941-727-1500 for your appointment.

Try the Natural Cold and Flu Remedy: Acupuncture!
Acupuncture to Get Better Faster - If you have already come down with a cold or the flu, acupuncture treatments can help relieve symptoms you are currently experiencing including chills, fever, body aches, runny nose, congestion, sore throat and cough. While bringing some immediate relief, treatments will reduce the incidence of an upper respiratory tract infection and shorten the length of the illness.

Acupuncture for Prevention - Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can prevent colds and flu by strengthening the immune system with just a few needles inserted into key points along the body's energy pathways.
In Oriental Medicine, disease prevention begins with a protective layer around the exterior of the body called wei qi or defensive energy. There are acupuncture points known for strengthening the circulation of blood and energy and for consolidating the outer defense layers of the skin and muscle (Wei Qi) so that germs and viruses cannot enter through them. If you catch colds easily, have low energy and require a long time recuperating from an illness your wei qi may be deficient.
Located below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebrae, approximately where the collar of a T-shirt sits on the neck is acupoint Du 14. This point activates the circulation of blood and Qi to strengthen the outer defense layers of the skin and muscle so that germs and viruses cannot enter through them. This point is often used to ward off as well as shorten the duration colds and flu.
Seasonal acupuncture treatments just four times a year also serve to tonify and balance the inner organ systems which can correct minor annoyances before they become serious problems.

barefoot massage using a deep compression effleurage gliding over the body. Gravitational force is combined with centrifugal and centripetal movements to bring about structural change in chronic soft tissue damage. This form of effleurage relieves muscle pain through a push, pull, pumping effect on the muscles of the client. Developed by Ruthie Hardee Piper in 1995, she combined the elements of traditional Thai massage, barefoot Shiatsu from Japan, and Keralite massage from Southern India.
Although the roots of AOBT are definitely Asian, the technique and application are truly western. Two parallel bars are used overhead by the therapist for balance and control over the client while they apply soft clean feet for the barefoot massage. Compared to the hand, the therapist has more options with the ability to use the ball of the foot, the lateral angle of the foot and the heel to manipulate the muscle.

Yoga for Body & Soul
Resolution Success!
The New Year brings with it an urgency to resolve to change. After hastily adapted, self improving promises to ourselves we are faced weeks later with disappointment, guilt and feelings of low self esteem from failing to maintain these (usually unrealistic) goals. This year set yourself up for success using these easy steps: 1) Resolution for the YEAR: Select an improvement you want to make over the course of the year. 2) Goal for the DAY: With your resolution in mind, each day set a related "goal for the day." |
Brook Longobardi,
CYI
|
EXAMPLE
1) Your resolution for the year is to lose weight.
2) Your goal for the day could be the following: "This day I resolve to eat only one sweet." or "This day I resolve to eat 5 different vegetables."
Success through the use of the daily goal is highly attainable. If you "forget" or aren't quite as successful as you would like, you can set the same goal for tomorrow! Additionally, facing the same resolution day after day can be discouraging and frankly boring. Plus, you have 365 chances to meet your goal and achieve success!
Try fitness for an improvement and set yoga and meditation as your daily goals. You can be sure each Alternative Therapy yoga class you attend will be unique and you will leave with a feeling of encouragement!
Call 941-727-1500 for class schedule and availability.
Namaste.
