Greetings!
The 2011 high school prom and graduation season are upon us. Although the Coalition is working hard to impress upon teens the fact that the majority of them in the Birmingham and Bloomfield area make good choices and do not drink, prom and graduation celebrations can provide temptations that could produce tragic results. Therefore, during this celebratory time, we are asking for your continued help in preventing teenage drinking.
Often parents have the best of intentions when hosting a party in their child's honor, but hosting a party where alcohol is available for teens is a big mistake. Underage drinking parties are a health and safety problem with serious legal consequences.
- Alcohol consumed or possessed by person under the age of 21 years is against the law.
-
It is against the law to furnish alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 yeas, or knowingly allow the consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor.
|

| | PWH logo |
- The parent or other person who knowingly allows or furnishes alcohol or illegal drugs at their home, a rented room, a limousine or any other location where young people under theh age of 21 years congregate, is guilty of breaking the law and may be convicted of a misdemeanor.
-
If you (the parent/guardian) or your son or daughter is convicted of a misdemeanor, you may be sentenced up to 93 days in jail, fined up to $1,000 and you will have a criminal record.
To learn more about hosting parties for teens, read "A Family Guide For Teen Parties" located on the Parent page of our website. Another good resource is the brochure "What's the big deal?"The Response of the Bloomfield Township Police Department to Underage Drinking.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact us.

| Parent Alert: Lazy Cakes are Not for Teens! | | |

From the laid-back Lazy Larry character to the colorfully-packaged sweet chocolate, this product screams of youth appeal. Lazy Cakes, at a glance, appear to be a single-serving, gourmet-type brownie dessert; a treat you wouldn't think twice about if you saw your teen eating. But parents beware, this is no typical brownie. When you take a close look at the label, you will see this product contains a variety of herbal ingredients along with the caution, "recommended for adults only." Read more
Please note: Lazy Cakes are available in the Detroit area and can be easily located via its FaceBook Fan Page. |

| Middle School Transition Program in Schools Now | | |
The Coalition is in its third year of delivering a Middle School Transition Program to 8th graders in the Birmingham and Bloomfield public schools.
The goals for this 40-minute, interactive program are to:
1. Correct the misperceptions that many 8th grade students carry about drug and alcohol use in high school
2. Understand the real harmful consequences that go along with drug and alcohol use
3. Get 8th grade students' questions answered by the real experts, high school students from their feeder school
To achieve our goals, we focus on the truths about drug and alcohol use using a combination of the Coalition's own 2009 8th-12th data (on actual and perceived substance use). The data shows the students there is a large misperception in actual use vs what's really happening. We also use other data sources to show the dangers and harmful affects of drug and alcohol use. The presentation has an interactive portion with clickers, allowing the students to answer some of the same questions that are in our survey and then see how their answers compare with the actual survey results.
We also bring a panel of "experts"-- high school students from the feeder schools who talk about and answer pre-written and 'live' questions about the high school experience and transition. These can be anything that the students are anxious or curious about and always tend to include the social scene, choices, consequences and substance-use.
