| CHOICES: Youth-led Dialogue Day Recap | | |
On Tuesday, March 22, 2011, over 75 students and 35 adults from 9 different Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills public and private schools gathered at the Doyle Center in Bloomfield Hills for a youth- led dialogue day on the growing problem of high school student use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. For the first time, the YAB teens invited parents from the community to attend and be a part of this important dialogue, and the solution. Following are two reports on the day's events.

The first report is by YAB's own, Kelsey McClear, a sophomore at Seaholm High School. Kelsey's article on CHOICES ran in her school's student newspaper, Ernest W. Seaholm Highlander...
Last month, the Birmingham Bloomfield Youth Action Boards (YAB) brought the 48th District Court to school. Students from Birmingham and Bloomfield High Schools came together to discuss the substance abuse issues in the community in an event called Choices. Click here to read more
The second report covers a summary of the day including attendee reactions... The event began with an impactful and eye-opening Live Court presentation from the 48th District Court, in which two pending alcohol related offenses were heard and sentenced. The first case hit very close to home with many of the students in attendance. A senior at Andover high school, who with his lawyer and parents addressed the court and his peers in attendance - many of whom he would later that day see in school. He talked about his struggles and experiences since his arrest and encouraged students and parents to take action now before things get out of hand. Click here to read more |

| White House Releases National Plan to Address Rx Abuse | | To address the nation's prescription drug abuse epidemic, the Obama Administration released an action plan on Tuesday that includes education, monitoring and tracking, medication disposal and enforcement. The announcement comes after several national leaders, including CADCA Chairman and CEO Gen. Arthur T. Dean, testified in Congress last week about ways to address prescription drug abuse.
The plan, which was developed with input from several federal agencies, calls for more state-based prescription drug monitoring programs (PMPs), greater education for healthcare providers and patients, more convenient and environmentally-sound drug disposal methods and enhanced enforcement efforts to clamp down on so called "pill mills" and doctor shopping.
