Issue: # 4March/2011

Greetings!

Research shows that kids who learn a lot about the dangers of drugs from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use than those who do not get those important messages at home.

One of our 'go to' prevention resources is the Partnership at Drugfree.org known for celebrating the positive influence of parents in the lives of their kids. The following resolutions for parents ran in one  of their announcements this year.

Beginning today, resolve to talk more often with your family about healthy decisions and choices. And, to help with this goal,

10 Resolutions That Show Your Kids You Care

  1. Teach your children to trust you by seeing you as a role model.
  2. Be patient, not just tolerant. Apologize when you make a mistake or do something you regret.
  3. Ask teens what they need from you - and do whatever you can to meet those needs.
  4. Listen to your teens, a lot. Avoid interrupting.
  5. Teach your children about ethics, values and principles they can apply in choices and decision making.
  6. Help them discover the feeling of gratitude, not just to say thank you.
  7. Keep the promises you make. If you do not keep your word, acknowledge that. Help your teen understand the circumstances or choices that precipitated the change in your plans.
  8. Answer your teen's questions and be consistent. When you notice behavioral changes in them, make yourself available and encourage them to talk about what is going on in their life.
  9. Be understanding when they have a difficult time and let them know you will love them no matter what.
  10. Be diligent. Have ongoing conversations with your kids about the risks of drugs and alcohol.
You can visit our website's calendar to learn more about programs, activities and events scheduled in 2011. And, while you are there, please make a financial contribution to support our substance abuse prevention efforts.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact us.

Working together, with you, for substance free youth,

Parenting is even more challenging today because our children have access to information and people, from all over the world, via social networking sites such as, FaceBook,  YouTube, and Twitter. Because of this, parents need even more resources in their toolbox to keep their kids safe and substance free.

FamilySignal.com is a new parental resource ready to help. Through the use of technology, FamilySignal.com  analyzes what your child sends & receives on social networks for signs of danger. Parents are then instantly alerted to any suspected dangerous activity with a text message and an email.

According to Brian Eisenberg, Birmingham School parent and co-founder of FamilySignal, "The origin of FamilySignal.com is simple: the world has changed and parents need help. We were disgusted by constantly reading about cyberbullying cases, sexual assaults that resulted from online contact, and predators preying on children via social networks. We knew technology could help to build an environment where we don't need to worry about our kids being safe on Facebook."

FamilySignal.com is designed to be extremely easy for parents to understand and use, while offering a powerful tool in protecting children: awareness. Alerts are not only useful for parents to immediately stay abreast of developing situations online, but also provide excellent teaching and discussion opportunities for their children.

Visit www.FamilySignal.com to learn more or start your 7-day free trial. If you enter promo code BBCC, the Coalition will receive $5 per sign-up.

Since this is a brand-new service, we would appreciate hearing feedback from parents who give this a try. Please email Carol at cmastroianni@bbcoalition.org or call her at 248.203.4615.
