Transportation projects in Sumter County, including the planned widening of I-75, will be the topic of the May 11 Chamber Lunch Exchange. Beata Stys-Palasz, Florida DOT Project Manager for the widening project, has been invited to discuss plans to improve safety and capacity on I-75 from the Hernando/Sumter county line to south of Florida's Turnpike. T.J. Fish, Executive Director of the Lake/Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization, will also discuss the Transportation 2035 long-range transportation plan, and Sumter County Public Works Director Scott Cottrell will also discuss upcoming county projects. 

The chamber's Leads Group Sunrise, which meets Tuesdays in Wildwood, and Leads Group Lunch, which meets Mondays in Bushnell, will give away a Kindle electronic book reader, courtesy of The Insurance Market Place, and book downloads from Amazon.com, courtesy of Edward Jones-Joe Capporelli in Bushnell. Be sure to stop by the Leads Groups table and drop your business card.

The Lunch Exchange will be held at 11:30am at the Wildwood Country Resort, 5604 Heritage Blvd. in Wildwood. Chick Fil-A of The Villages will provide a delicious lunch. The cost to attend is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. RSVP's are required and can be made by calling the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce at 352-793-2120 or e-mailing sumter-coc@sumterchamber.org.

Minimum Wage to Rise June 1
The state's minimum wage will increase by 6 cents an hour to $7.31 on June 1 after a judge agreed that the state's employment agency was miscalculating the rate. Source: Associated Press Read More Here>>

lscc The Business Resources Center of Lake-Sumter Community College is launching a Sumter County Entrepreneurial Institute this spring. Whether you are in business or thinking about going into business this 10-week 30-hour Institute will be a real asset in your planning and/or managing your business.
Sumter County Chamber members receive a 50% discount on tutition.

 

Start Date:  Wednesday, June 8     Times: 6 to 9PM 

Location: Wildwood Community Center, 6500 Powell Road (CR 139), Wildwood, Fla.

Duration: 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings concluding on August 10. Graduation on August 17. 

Cost: Chamber of Commerce Members: regularly $165 now $82.50. Non-Members: $195

6th Annual Tracy's Point Youth Fishing Tournament

May 21 - Entry fee is $30 per person. There will be two age divisions; 6 thru 12 and 13 thru 17. Winners are awarded for top 3 places in each age group based on the most weight out of 10 pan fish. First place in each division gets $300; $150 for 2nd and $50 for 3rd, with one award of $100 for the largest trash fish Registration forms are available at the Tracy's Point Bait and Tackle Shop. Homes in Partnership Inc. will celebrate 36 years of Mutual Self Help Housing with its annual appreciation dinner on October 13. The dinner will be held at the Orlando Sheraton Hotel in Maitland. The Florida National Cemetery Joint Veterans Committee (JVC) will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Florida National Cemetery on Monday, May 31, 2011 at 11am. Brigadier General James S. Deaf and Hearing Services of Lake & Sumter Counties will have their 6th Annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 14, from 8am to 1pm. It will be located at 220 South 9th Street, Leesburg. Jonathan Squires, "The Plant Guy" will speak about Florida Friendly Plants and will be available to answer questions. Proceeds benefit individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Food and refreshments will be available.  For questions call 352-323-0757.   Read More Here>>

Wildwood Athletic Club to hold its 4th Annual Fishing Tournament. May 28 is the date for this fund raising event. All proceeds go directly to help athletes in the Wildwood School system.
