A Note From Karri
Dear Chamber Member,
The Most Popular Fair On Earth is in the books, and another successful year it was. Nine Chamber Members shared our booth this year to promote their businesses. These members were able to showcase their business during a half day shift to fair patrons without having to commit their business to the fair for an entire week. This membership benefit is a valuable asset for small business. Staring in July and sometimes earlier than that, we begin to receive calls asking when our county fair will be held. It is amazing the distances people travel to visit our county fair. With a limited staff and a working board of directors, we manage to keep the office open all week and maintain a booth at the fair. We utilize our fair booth to promote our Chamber members, classic car sales, phone directory & map distribution and this year we also focused on the TUF program.
The TUF program continues to gain momentum both with new businesses participating and more people purchasing wristbands. If you are not part of the TUF program, I encourage you to call myself or a TUF participating business to find out how this program can benefit your business. I know I have said it before, but this program is FREE to participate in. Your only cost, is the discount(s) you offer through the program. The only work involved on your part is submitting your offer(s) each month (which we do not require you to change every month unless you choose to). What program is working to help your bottom line with FREE promotions in the Hillsdale Daily News, Community Helper, Tip Off Shopping Guide, WCSR and online? Who is compiling a database of consumers and e-mailing your potential customers your monthly specials? The Chamber is proud to bring this program to the business community, however business participation is needed for its' success.
We will be hosting a Meet the Candidates on October 18 at Davis Middle School Auditorium from 6 PM - 9 PM. Don't miss this opportunity to learn who the candidates are and where they stand on important issues. Your voice is important... and those you choose to represent that voice in Hillsdale County, Lansing and Washington are equally important.
We will be hosting another Texas Hold 'Em fundraiser with Aces High at the Hillsdale Hunt Club on October 21-24. If you like Texas Hold 'Em, please show your support for the Chamber by attending this event.
We will be co-hosting nine social networking webinars in November (LinkedIn), December (Facebook) and January (Twitter). The fee for Chamber members to participate is only $25 per month and will cover all three sessions presented during that month. The key benefit of a webinar is not having to leave your business to attend, you only have to have an internet connection and phone line to participate. LinkedIn is a business networking site which allows business professionals the ability to communicate latest trends, issues and business practices within your field. I always hear "I don't have time for that stuff". If you are not getting involved in social networking for your business, you are passing up countless opportunities while your competition is reaping the benefit. Please consider joining us to learn more about LinkedIn on November 3, 10 & 17.
As always, if there is anything the Chamber can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Respectfully,
Karri Doty, IOM President/Executive Director

Seal the Deal in Seven Seconds Seal the Deal Sales Technique
From: Lydia Ramsey Source: About.com Can you close a sale in just seven seconds? You can do it faster if
you use a sales technique to make a great first impression. Seven
seconds is the average length of time you have to make a first
impression. If your first impression is not good you won' t get another
chance with that potential client. Make a great first impression and
the client is likely to take your small business seriously.
Whether your initial meeting is face-to-face, over the phone or via
the Internet, you do not have time to waste. It pays for you to
understand the sales technique of how people make their first judgment
and what you can do to control the results.
Learn the Non-verbal Sales Technique: When you meet
someone face-to-face, 93% of how you are judged is based on non-verbal
data - your appearance and your body language. Only 7% is influenced by
the words that you speak. A good sales technique is to remember people
do judge a book by its cover. When your initial encounter is over the
phone, 70% of how you are perceived is based on your tone of voice and
30% on your words. It's not what you say - it's the way that you say
it.

Dr. Seuss's Selling Technique By: Kelley Robertson Source: about.com
Most people have read the Dr. Seuss tale "Green Eggs & Ham",
either as kids or to their children. What is interesting is the
relevance this story has to selling. Learn the secrets of Dr. Seusus's
selling technique and build your sales.
"I am Sam. Sam I am. Do you like green eggs and ham? Would you like
them here or there? Would you like them in a box, would you like them
with a fox?"
3 Step Selling Technique From Dr. Seuss
1. Sam is selling a product and although his prospect is not initially interested, Sam doesn't let that deter him from asking.
2. Sam consistently offers the prospect a choice when trying to close the sale.

A message from State Representative Ken Kurtz |

September 29, 2010
It is fall and we now get to enjoy what comes with this wonderful season. As the last county fair of the year, our Hillsdale County Fair allows us to share in our community with friends old and new. Although the Michigan weather can literally dampen our time together I hope everyone enjoys this yearly event as much as I do. This year, I had the special honor of guiding our next Lt. Governor Brian Calley around the fair and introducing him to many wonderful and excited people in our area. I believe his multiple visits to our community have left a lasting impression and our next administration will certainly know Hillsdale County and its value.
At the same time, our state's budget for the next year was passed without raising taxes on our citizens. The budget process also started the beginning of needed reforms that will be necessary for the years to come. Although I believe there are many more reforms that must take place, this budget goes farther to implement reforms than those in our recent past. As a state we are still compelled to tighten our belts, as we create a Michigan that is business friendly, providing jobs and security for the future.
As election day draws closer we will certainly see many messages that come by way of the mail,
papers, radio, TV and the knocks on the door. I want to once again remind everyone that it is very
important that we each become educated and understand each candidate and proposal. Voting IS our opportunity to be a part of improving Michigan in the years ahead but we can only do so if we
understand what kind of future Michigan our vote represents.
As always feel free to contact me through my office.
