Do non living mold spores release allergens?
Recent tests conducted to establish how certain mold become an allergen have yielded the following results:
- Spores may actually have to germinate to release allergens.
- Fungi spores have to land in respiratory mucous , absorb water, sugar and oxygen to germinate and release allergens. This process can take from a few minutes to many hours

Not all fungi can germinate in the human respiratory track. Needless to say, all of the fungi that can cause fungi infection can germinate, and most of the studies on fungal germination in respiratory mucosa have been done on the opportunistic pathogens such as Aspergilus Fumigatus. Alternaria alternata must be able to germinate readily, since this is the most common sensitizer among fungi in spite of the fact that concentrations in the air are generally much lower than for many other fungi, including cladosporium.
Meanwhile, undoubtedly a dead spore cannot germinate and therefore is not likely to release allergens.
