WDI is proud to welcome several new businesses to downtown Wilmington: Marrakesh, Village Market, and The Wonder Shop. Marrakesh, a Mediterranean restaurant, will be located in the previous Rum Runners' space at 21 North Front Street. The restaurant will likely employ a total of 30 staff members, including: wait staff, bartenders, managers and kitchen employees. Job Fair 

BBX Computers will be hosting a job fair in the WDI office building, located at 221 North Front Street, on October 18. Please join the company next Tuesday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm to learn more about the employment opportunities. BBX will be hiring up to five individuals, and encourage bringing at least three resumes. The company, based in Leland, is experiencing rapid growth and will be developing a spin-off company in downtown Wilmington.

encore Restaurant Week, October 19-26, was created for those who love to eat! This event gives local food aficionados and visitors an opportunity to enjoy 3-course, prix fixe lunch and/or dinner menus at over 25 participating restaurants throughout the Port City at a fixed price (tax and gratuity not included). Wilmington Convention Center Will Host FEDCON Summit  

On October 19-20, travel industry partners in Wilmington, North Carolina's historic river district and island beaches will welcome the 2011 N.C. Federal Construction (FEDCON) & Infrastructure Summit (formerly known as the MILCON Summit). This year the event will be held at the new riverfront Wilmington Convention Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Previously the annual summit was held in other North Carolina destinations.

"It is an honor for our destination to be selected as the location for the 2011 FEDCON Summit," states Kim Hufham, president/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority. "Based on 700 attendees staying an average of three nights, it is estimated that the event will generate direct spending of approximately $354,180. Using a conservative 2.5 multiplier, the total economic impact is approximately $885,450."

According to Malissa Talbert, Communications Manager for the City of Wilmington, the Wilmington Convention Center will welcome 17,415 visitors and serve 13,150 meals meals in next two months.

North Carolina's Southeast recently released the 2011 State of the Region, annual economic indicators report. The mission of North Carolina's Southeast is to provide strong regional economic development leadership in southeastern North Carolina through innovative marketing and collaborative regional initiatives that will create new jobs, generate capital investment, and secure new business locations. The report, covering 11 counties in North Carolina's Southeast, includes information on population growth, diversity, fastest growing sectors, unemployment rates, poverty rates, wages, housing, cost of living and more. Public Meeting on City Sign Regulations

The City of Wilmington is asking for your help and input to improve downtown sign regulations. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend to: 

  • Increase your understanding of the city's policy regarding signs and flyers in windows;
  • Discuss and provide input about alternatives to the city's policy regarding signs and flyers in windows;
  • Help identify ways the city can better communicate with downtown stakeholders in the future.
