Indiana Bill Would put Law Enforcement in Danger
In less than 12 hours Indiana legislature are most likely to approve SB0001, a bill that will greatly endanger the lives of Law Enforcement Officers in the State of Indiana. "It is now scheduled for Conference Committee today at 3:00 p.m. That will essentially be the final step," according to Indiana FOP. SB0001 provides: "(h) A person is justified in using reasonable force against any law enforcement officer if the person reasonably believes the force is necessary:" It continues with clauses about the statement above along with reasons a person should not utilize force against officers. We encourage everyone to visit the Indiana FOP site to read page 12 of the Legislative Digest #9.http://www.instatefop.org/fop.aspx?id=4 If you are from Indiana please contact your state representatives immediately and let them know your opposition. If you are not from Indiana please contact the Governor of the State of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, at 317-232-4567 or online at http://www.in.gov/gov/2631.htm to let him know that Law Enforcement and supporters of Law Enforcement do not agree with this legislation that will push our loved ones even more into harm's way.

Still Time to Register for a Traumas of Law Enforcement Training
The final grant-funded 2012 Traumas of Law Enforcement (TLE) training will be held March 26-28, 2012, in Pittsburgh, PA. There is no cost to attend the training, but registration is mandatory. Registration deadline is March 9, 2012. For additional details on the training and online registration visit the TLE Training Page.
Each year National C.O.P.S. receives grant funding to host seven training sessions around the U.S. These are chosen by the National Board and staff dependent upon interest, accessibility to major airports and past area attendance.
Please call the National Office (573-346-4911) if you are interested in attending any of the TLE trainings or to host one in your city.
If a chapter or organization sees the need they may host a non-grant funded event at their own expense. The National C.O.P.S. Office was happy to work with Arizona to have one scheduled for April. Please see below for details.
"Outstanding Material! - Every officer should be required to attend this segment in their first 3 years of employment." - Quote from an Oak Lawn (Chicago) TLE Attendee.

Blue Alert System Gaining Ground Across the nation states are working to implement Blue Alert programs. This program utilizes the same notification system as Amber and Silver Alerts.
For a Blue Alert to be issued all of the following must be met.
- A law enforcement officer must have been killed or seriously injured by an offender.
- The investigating law enforcement agency must determine that the offender poses a serious risk or threat to the public and other law enforcement personnel.
- A detailed description of the offender's vehicle, vehicle tag, or partial tag must be available for broadcast to the public.
- The investigating law enforcement agency of jurisdiction must recommend activation of the Blue Alert to the State Operations Center (Governors' Divisions of Emergency Management).
Currently, 18 states have implemented Blue Alert systems. This month alone, Ohio and South Carolina have passed bills. Washington State is rapidly moving through the process and hopes to have a bill on the Governor's desk before the month is over.
Here are the states with Blue Alert Notification Systems in place: Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida(Officer Down Alert), Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. "As the father of a fallen officer, I am sensitive to the need to apprehend our most dangerous criminals as quickly as we can," said Sen. Tom Patton, Ohio. |

Testimonial
"LEU's efforts to support C.O.P.S. Hands-On Programs have allowed my sons and me a place to share our experiences with others just like us in a safe environment. It is an incredible feeling after all of the heartache, to go there and feel that you are not alone.
In my first year as a rider with LEU, they made me feel so welcome and I finally understood the camaraderie and brotherhood that truly exists within law enforcement. I was amazed at what those law enforcement officers were doing to honor my husband, all those who died in the line of duty, and us survivors. The Ride became even more meaningful to me when I saw all of the kids and my fellow survivors at camp and I knew I had helped to make it possible."
- Trish Wertz, Pennsylvania, Surviving Spouse & LEU Rider
