Important Tax Information
This is a reminder to all survivors that IRS Code Title 26 101(h) states that "gross income shall not include any amount paid as a survivor annuity on account of the death of a public safety officer killed in the line of duty". There are exceptions to this law, so please check with a qualified tax accountant to see if you qualify for this tax exemption. And don't forget that April 15 is the deadline for filing your Federal and state taxes.

National 9/11 Flag Will be at National Police Week

9/11 FlagThe National 9/11 Flag is one of the largest American flags to fly above the wreckage at Ground Zero. Destroyed in the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and stitched back together seven years later by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Kansas, the National 9/11 Flag is a living testament to the resilience and compassion of the American people.

As part of the National 9/11 Flag Tour, National Police Week participants will be given the once-in-a-lifetime privilege of restoring the National 9/11 Flag back to its original format by stitching in fabric from American flags destined for retirement in all 50 states. The National 9/11 Flag will be at the Hilton Alexandria the afternoon of May 16, 2011, following the closing of the National Police Survivors' Conference from 3-7:00 p.m.

The goal is to make the National 9/11 Flag whole again by the 10th Year Anniversary of 9/11. Once fully restored, the National 9/11 Flag will become a part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center. Crime Victims Rights 2011

National Crime Victim's Rights Week serves as a call to action for fairness, dignity, and respect for all victims of crime. Every year Crime Victim's Rights Week celebrates the progress made and the commitment to ensure that all victims know about and can exercise their rights. This year's theme "Reshaping the Future, Honoring the Past" pays tribute to the millions of crime victims over the decades who have summoned the strength to rebuild their shattered lives, families, and communities, one step at a time.

"In a society that often avoids talking about death and grief, C.O.P.S. National Police Survivors' Conference provides an opportunity for surviving family members to share and process their grief and to connect with other survivors who are dealing with similar losses."
