Blue Alert Moving Ahead in the New Year!
The C.O.P.S. National Office has been contacted by numerous law enforcement survivors and members of the law enforcement community to see how they can help get the Blue Alert implemented in their state. The Blue Alert will provide the means to speed the apprehension of violent criminals who kill or seriously wound local, state, or federal law enforcement officers.

Recently the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police became aware of the Blue Alert campaign and the efforts being undertaken by C.O.P.S. and are introducing the Blue Alert into Colorado Legislation. Kelly Young, Colorado C.O.P.S. Chapter President, spoke at the testimony for the bill on February 3, 2011.

The National Office was also recently notified that our new Montana C.O.P.S. Chapter has been working hard on getting the Blue Alert passed. They have been working with Representative Steve Lanvin who sponsored the Blue Alert bill (HB 269). In January the House had 100 representatives vote for the bill during the first reading and they cheered after after the vote! An amazing coincidence is that the bill number is the same number as Montana Highway Trooper David DeLaittre's badge number, End of Watch 12/1/2010.

Kristina Benoit of Massachusetts has also been working diligently on getting the Blue Alert passed. She notified the National Office that the Blue Alert has been drafted and will soon have a public safety committee hearing; they are expecting a positive response. Kristina's father passed away 11/11/1983 as a retired Massachusetts State Police Officer. She keeps his memory alive by being active in the law enforcement community.

C.O.P.S. members are making great strides with the Blue Alert. The National Office would like to see even more people get involved in a show of support for the brave men and women who protect our great nation. Help us ensure that those who do harm to our protectors are quickly captured, fully prosecuted, and appropriately punished. For more information on what you can do to help, contact Brooke McKay at brooke_mckay@nationalcops.org.

"Being around people who understand what my girls and I are going through is truly comforting. I have been asked by many why I am so involved with C.O.P.S., doesn't that make you sad and keep bringing up your loss? I tell them NO! It is quite the opposite; nothing can change what has happened or bring my girls' dad back, but the wonderful people and programs offered by C.O.P.S. has helped in our healing process. They have helped us realize that even without William we are entitled to be happy and to live the best possible life that we can."

Lisa Preslar, surviving spouse of Police Officer William Preslar with the Lakewood (NJ) Police Department, End of Watch May 14, 2007
